| i cant believe i didnt see the connexion(s) to Beckett. they are far too similar to each other to not be of some significance. i think that the shallow life theory hold up pretty well and i think im going to adopt it. the line...'as soon as youre born you start dying so you might as well have a good time' sounds like a satirical statement saying that there is more to life than just empty pleasures. nice post lindyswingster. im going to find some beckett to read. | |

| the 'rope around the neck...i'll tell you when i get back' lyric is one of my favorite lines in music EVER. im not sure what its refrencing but its just cool to imagine him saying that. i'm not sure, but i think this song has more meaning to it than just something about abusive authority...but that is definitely a part of it. what authority are they talking about is what im wondering. i dont think they would just arbitrarily write a song about excessive military power or police brutality, AH! WHAT DOES IT MEAN!? maybe im just looking into it too much...oh well, its a cool song whatever its about. | |
| Dispatch – The General Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| i know that since there are so many posts on this song it really doesnt matter what i write, but frankly my dear...(you know the words). i think this song is about a general who has sworn to fight for his country, but during his dream he sees that his country is in the wrong and he is thus fighting for the evil side, the wrong side. he forgives the soldiers for their ignorance in not seeing this as he has, and then sends them away to do good while he is bound by his word to fight for his country. or something like that...this is a pretty loose theory and is up for editting and refinement. but thats my working idea for the song. this is a cool song, im going to go listen to it now. | |

as for the sheep and the goats...there is actually a scripture in the Bible speaking of them that this song may be referencing. Matthew 25:31-33 "But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left." i think there might be more of these sheep and goats in the Bible...i will keep looking i guess. over all i think the song says something along the lines of we are all going to die so just eat, drink and be merry in the meantime. the purpose of the sheep and goats is a little perplexing. perhaps its has something to do with God punishing those who have fun instead of following Christianity, which reminds me of a poem called 'The Song of the Strange Ascetic' by G. K. Chesterton. whatever the song means, i like it and i love cake. sweet...sweet cake. :-) |
