| Cake – Cool Blue Reason Lyrics

Naw, I disagree. It's cool blue reason - pure cold reason, blocking emotion just so you can keep going. Being alone to fight your enraged enemies, knowing that your wife and children are probably dead in another state far away from you but totally powerless to do anything, and time feels like it has slowed as you feel each visceral moment pass. What else can you do? The time to grieve and mourn is not now, you have to find a way to keep going.
Also, if you listen to it, in the beginning they play with his voice and make it all mechanized and stuff...almost robotic, just logic, no emotion. That's what I think the song is about.
And by the way, I thought the line was "I'm just rearranging health" not "hell"... |

Interesting, Eli, thanks for posting that. I hadn't thought of Death Cab being socialist...do you think their other songs are also socialist? |

I remember first hearing this song and it really stuck out from the rest of the album. Much of the other stuff is more pop- and mainstream oriented, but this is the song where they take the time to get really serious and talk about the darkness and heaviness that surrounds their lives. I think the line "a thousand cigarettes won't change the way we feel" is one of my favorites...out of everything I've heard from them, this song has the strongest and the most genuine feeling, and I really like that. |

I love this song; he's kind of got a sense of bitter and bittersweet humor about the whole thing. By the way, though, I'm pretty sure the line is "got a job at Chick Filet" - as in the fast food restaurant. |

What a great song...what's sad is that friends of mine who are freshmen in college have never heard this song, or if they have, are clueless as to what it means. I was young when the Berlin Wall came down, but I remember it vaguely...I have more of an association of it coming down to this song than to memory. What a great song...:) |

I always thought this was a song about a sick child, like the guy's younger sibling or nephew or friend or something. He calls the child "child" as opposed to by name or anything, just an anonymous child, so I don't think the kid is his son. It seems like the child is sick, since he asks if he is very far from meeting God, i.e. very sick and may die soon. Thoughts? |

yeah, that's kinda what I always thought...especially with the line about the first born son. Very sad song. |

What a great aggression song.
At any rate JJ, I'm not quite sure if clever feet actually referring to dancing, though I can see why you would think that, but that just doesn't quite work for me. Hmm...interesting food for thought... |

This is such a beautiful, sad, sweet song. There is something very simple and childlike about it; I have this image of two people dropping all pretenses and just accepting each other and enjoying their time together. |

Mopnugget, that's a really interesting interpretation on the song; I had never thought of it that way...I had just figured it was one of those angry-at-a-friendship kind of things, as in the others abused their friendship in some way. But I think I actually like your interpretation more... |

I'm still not totally sure what this song means either, but I love it...it's one of those songs that when you listen to it, no matter what's going on, you just know it's eventually going to turn out ok in the end...:) |

| Cake – Sheep Go To Heaven Lyrics

So there I was watching a play called Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett (1954), and right in the middle of one of the monologues was the line "and the grave digger puts on the foreceps"...the play is a classic modern piece about people wasting their lives away living in habit and routine, one day just like another with no memory of the previous...waiting for something that is supposed to have meaning but never shows up. Some also say that Godot is Beckett's name for "little god"...he has a messenger, a little boy who looks after the sheep while his twin brother looks after the goats. The boy is treated well by Godot, but his brother is not...some also say that sheep are favored in Christianity for their blind trust while goats are far more mistrusting...this is actually why the church of satan has a goat on it, btw, random bit o' trivia...
At any rate though, it seems to me that this song is about rejecting the shallowness of life (the sunset strip bit)...it's a pretty fun, lighthearted melody, but the lyrics to me seem a little on the bitter side. Thoughts?

| Moxy Früvous – The Drinking Song Lyrics

I love this song - though it is so sad. If this doesn't make you want to not drink to excess, I don't know what would...
At any rate, so much of this song has overtones of one's own willful choice of headed towards self-distruction: the song referenced actually goes "sometimes I live in the country/sometimes I live in town/sometimes I get a good notion/to jump in the river and drown/Irene goodnight...."
This is such a great song...Moxy Fruvous has this incredible ability to mix great song writing with musical talent...I love these guys... |

| Primitive Radio Gods – Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand Lyrics

Well, the line is about zebra flesh...according to the lyrics in the liner notes in the album.
At any rate, this song has always had a very soothing quality to me...like it was saying to accept and just go with life, along its twists and turns and curve balls, that life goes on...but that might just be me. But this is one of my favorite songs though, even if the rest of the album is awful...:) |

I had this song up as an away message earlier, and my friend IMed me and asked me if this meant I wanted to be dead...I hadn't thought of this song in that way, but it kinda works...either way though, it's still one of my favorite bittersweet love songs |
