I agree with nerdstar that this is my life! I especially feel the part where he says "and it's too hard when I can't even catch your eye so I can't send you messages" which means that the person he loves won't even give him the time of day or look at him and that's why it's so difficult. Because if she would only look at his eyes, she will see into his soul and see what a good guy he is. And the "messages" he wants to send her is to tell her what he has to offer and how he feels about her. Or maybe that she can trust him. But alas, they don't make eye contact. |

What's up w/ the people who are bitching about how this song is being overplayed? Don't you know the formula by now? This is how it is w/ EVERY catchy/popular new song! It airs, gets overplayed, and then gets off the air to make room for another new catchy/popular song that will -SURPRISE- get overplayed. (And I bet this is when more bitching is required, b/c it doesn't get enough fucking airplay now, am I right?) If you don't want to hear it, fucking turn to a different station. Case closed. And regarding how UL "sold out", I totally disagree. It's like what a few people have already said. People change and music change as well. I mean, duh, where do these musicians get their ideas from? From their lives, relationships, family, friends, personal experiences etc. EVERYONE changes and grows so their music has to as well b/c its a reflection of who they are during the time they recorded that piece. IT IS NOT A BAD THING! It just means that they are trying new things and expressing themselves in a different way. They're experiementing and that takes a lot of courage. So quit complaining. And what's up w/ the people who are pissed b/c they're getting "mainstream"? If you are a true fan, it wouldn't matter that you heard of them before anyone else had or that "teeny boppers" like them now so you can't. That is lame and immature. I really like Dreden's view and what Phreakiegirl said that "That I can show you how, it feels to be inside of you" could also be about inside someone's heart. Very romantic song and I love how he says, "Meet me in outer space" and " How do you do it, make me feel like I do?" That line is so simple and straightforward and yet, when you tell that to someone, it means so much. Awwwwe!

I kinda like Kill me killroy's meaning even though it was very sad b/c there is some truth to it as well. It's like he is saying, even though you broke my heart, and I know I shouldn't be telling you this now seeing we're no longer together, but I had to tell you that this was how you made me feel. "To see you when I wake up is a gift I didn't think could be real. To know that you feel the same as I do is a three-fold, utopian dream. You do something to me that I can't explain." I've been there a few times where a significant other has done or said something that might have been trivial to him, but to me, it meant more then he could ever know. But for some reason, I don't get to express it while I'm w/ him and when we've broken apart, then I'm like, oh yeah, remember that one time... well, I never told you this but that meant the world to me...and well, I had to let you know. Whenever I play this song, it always makes me feel sad b/c it reminds me of past relationships. The whole feel of the song seems rather sarcastic and ironic to me. (In this moment I am happy, I wish you were here) It's like, whatever he does, he's only happy for an instant but then all thoughts go back to his ex or whatnot and he is saddened. Like he is on the beach and having fun but there's something missing, and it's her. Does anyone else feel this way at all? This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. This song is about a long distance relationship. He is saying, even though she is somewhere else, her presence/spirit is w/ him regardless even across the miles. (You live too far away your voice rings like a bell anyway) This song is his way to convey to her that he knows long distance relationships are difficult but he knows it's worth it. (nothing good comes easily sometimes you gotta fight) He still loves her the same, maybe even more and he will wait for her faithfully b/c he doesn't want anyone else but her and she doesn't have anything to worry about. (launched a thousand ships in my heart, so easy still it's fine from afar, and you know that) When asked why he is still w/ her, he responds that she should already know the answer. And I know you're under me..." This part definitely describes sex but I agree w/ you like so many before us, that even though Chris made a reference to sex, that's not what the song is about. The meaning IS SO much deeper. That's what everyone has been saying and I don't appreciate your comment, "... i thought it had a deeper meaning silly me". You're making it seem like we are all shallow and we love the song b/c it was about sex or something. Like we can't read between the lines or something. Anyway, I don't know if that was your intention but if it is, that's messed up. First of all, I am a huge GUK's fan and I was a little disappointed w/ the On A Wire CD. The only tracks that I like are 1, 2, 6, 10, 12. Campfire Kansas being my fave. And as for Saves the Day's Stay What You Are, at first, I didn't like it very much either but after listening to it a few times, it totally grew on me and now I LOVE IT! I listen to it every day. This just goes back to what others have said before me, how we should applaude the bands for growing and experimenting w/ lyrics and sound instead of being chicken shit and sticking to the same formula over and over again. At least they are trying new stuff and if it doesn't work out, they can always go back to what they sounded like before. But to be able to put something together that is totally different and throw it out to the fans is amazing. Anyway, whatever TGUK or STD records, I will buy it regardlesss so let's stop trying to rival them against each other. When I think of STD, I think of TGUK and vice versa. Not that they sound alike but the fact that they are amazing musicians and their music comes from the heart and they are successful for their talent b/c they write their own lyrics/songs unlike boy bands out there who depend on their model looks and dance moves. |

I like linzy279's meaning and it makes a lot of sense to me. But I read in an interview w/ STD that during the short time Chris was in college, he had a roomate named Nick who was a "prick" and that's where the song came from. Anyway. This is definitely not the best song on the CD but I love the title! I used to want to please everyone and couldn't stand it when someone didn't like me b/c it was such a big dealto me. Eventually I learned that I couldn't please everybody and all that really mattered was to be myself and the people who are worth pleasing, already love me just the way I am. I am so glad this song is acoustic b/c it is perfect! Chris sums it up perfectly... it's the best sad/breakup song to sing along to. Definitely about two people breaking up and how he can't get over her and perhaps entertain false hopes that she will change her mind and get back w/ him even though he knows in his heart, they are really over. He is tired of always being the first one to give in and call and try and talk things out (Why does my heart always beat before yours does?) b/c he knows if she cared half as much as he, she'd make the initiative this time. And when she doesn't call him, he is sad and in denial. (So I'm making myself believe in you). This song always makes me think of how I know I really like a guy, b/c I'd save his voicemails so I can replay it and listen to his voice.. sorry if it seems creepy but hey, I know I'm not the only one!!! I love the ending as well about walking across the stage, hearing the applause...The message is definitely how even though you look back on life, don't dwell on the mistakes or bad experiences but realize you did everything for a reason. Don't be too hard on yourself for you did what you had to do. And most of the time, we are too hard on ourselves and instead of regretting things, we should try and look at our life like an outsider (the usage of an actor and the play) and that way, we can truly see what we've done/our accomplishments that someone else may find truly amazing that we wouldn't have thought. |

This is one of the most romantic songs I've ever heard! I love how the words paint pictures in my mind and the beautiful imagery that unfolds. To me, this is about a guy who's been in love w/ a girl forever and how he'd do anything to make her his and he just wants to make her happy w/out anything in return. Chris' metaphor of him being a slave to love (They sigh at the release as their shackles hit the ground) really applies to him. B/c he is a slave to gaining her love. And then when he is finally w/ her, he is overwhelmed and wants to celebrate b/c he is so happy. It's like he wants to shout it from the rooftop and announce it to the world. (The trumpets call out now) And after his long journey and search for her, he finally finds her but she also finds him-maybe realizing that what she needed was him all along. This song is definitely about a girl/or other person in his life who is no longer that important. Their relationship has been falling apart for some time but he's been trying to keep in touch maybe out of guilt or just a sense of duty. And he is stating that he doesn't have the heart to try anymore. "Right now I am turning off the lights cause I don't think that I have got the stomach to stomach calling you today." When he does try to hang out or call, all he gets is shit about how he's changed and whatnot and how that person doesn't know him anymore. This is the first song that I downloaded from Napster by STD and I loved it so much that I downloaded practically the whole CD. Then I went out and bought the CD b/c I played it so much! But yes, this was the song that started it all...I love this song so much! It is just the cutest song and I love it when he sings, "Did you know, my sweet that I once took the liberty of watching you in your sleep?" Very romantic about watching someone sleeping and the closeness and trust they feel for you to fall asleep in your presence in the first place. You care about that person so much that you are happy just being w/ them and watching them sleep. I think the part about touching the knees is to say that his love for her is deeper than sex, but he is in love w/ her whole being, and even finds her knees appealing b/c they are hers. I love how Chris sings the last line, "...trrrrying to, touch your knnnneeeees!" I need you all to play it right now and listen to the emotion and desperate like heart ache! LOL |

When I first read the lyrics, I was totally blown away at its violent imagery. I couldn't wait to listen to it! LOL It is definitely about loving someone one minute and hating them the next. My fave lines are, "My heart is on the floor, why don't you step on it? When I think of all the things you've done". It's what I've always wanted to say to a guy that's broken my heart and couldn't put into words, and yet Chris is able to state that in a single line. I also really like, "And I'd remember how I miss our nights under ocean skies. You and I are like when fire and the ocean floor collide." I can easily relate to Chris being the ocean w/ his deep feelings for the girl who is like the sky, just beyond his reach. Even when they were together, they really weren't and that's why he says he,"... miss our nights under ocean skies." Because what they had was an illusion like how the color of the ocean is determined by the sky. A great break up song and very fun to sing at the top of your lungs... |

Ironically, I was introduced to STD by a special guy that ended up breaking my heart. He had lent the I'm Sorry I'm Leaving CD to me prior to the breakup and I fell in love w/ the band so I kept the CD. Hold definitely means so much to me and conveys so much in what seems to be a very deceptively simple song. I love the line, "I saw myself touch your face, and notice jets begin to race above our heads." Great imagery because she's gone but he still daydreams/ imagines about her and how he could touch her face just once more and how the situation he's in is way over his head. Great breakup song. |

I loooove this song even though it's sad. I never thought of Chris being a puppet catering to our needs since we cannot do it in as gifted of a fashion. BUT-the version of him doing everything to please the girl and her not caring seems to make more sense. He compares himself to a jukebox because she has complete control of him. He is like a machine or toy to her incapable of feeling. She is just using him. The part about him singing her songs to fit whatever mood is symbolic of how he reflects back whatever mood she is forcing upon him. If she is depressed or happy, she takes this out on him, and he mirrors back her emotions. He knows it's not healthy and it's killing him with the casket bit but he can't help it. At the end when he sings, "The Jukebox is in the corner. My mouth is the speaker. It plays your favorite songs and you know where the coin slot is," is Chris giving in and saying, that even though he is being treated poorly and being taken advantaged of, he knows she will come back to him not because she wants to be with him, but because she knows he'd do anything for her. This breaks his heart, but he doesn't have the courage to say no. |

I liked Bluebird179's perspective of two people first meeting with the awkward silence and perhaps the girl is closing her eyes to focus and listen better but no, this is definitely about breaking up. I'm sure everyone has been put in the position where you know that he/she's breaking up with you and in the last few rushed seconds, you panic at what you could possibly say to change his/her mind. So you're blabbering and stammering away trying to find the perfect words to say and you see it's pointless because your words aren't even getting through, they've just fallen flat at your feet and soaked up in the ground. To add insult to injury, the person decides that he/she doesn't want anything to do with you and you're begging that you don't get shut out of his/her life completely because it would just kill you and you'd do anything to try and get your mind off of that person. I agree with Bassistboy04 that this song may not be about drunken love but perhaps he walked a girl home and they finally confessed their feelings to each other. They're "drunk" on their love for each other which just totally fills them up and consumes them. This new found knowledge gives them energy, keeps them up and makes them go running wild and crazy in the streets at night because they are so happy. LOL This confusion over "bucket full of love" and "bucket full of diamonds" made me put on the CD. Chris does say "bucket fullof die ie monds" like bassistboy04 said. It's sad how the simple truth is that no matter what you do to try and save your relationship with the little things you could do such as write a song, love notes, buy jewelry, and taking out the trash meaning that he'd sacrifice or do anything for her but it will still not save the relationship because it's ultimately going to end. LOL Yes, "Am I dreaming? Is this really me? Because I've never felt so not lonely and if this could be real right now then everyday for the rest of my life I will search for moments full of you" is also my fave line from this song. I love it because it is so honest. I too have been there where I've had someone so special in my life that it makes me wonder if it could be real and if I were dreaming. And if it were real, I'd want it to last forever. But sometimes even though the relationship is over, the memories of when you felt like you've finally found someone who understands you will never totally fade because they've touched that part of your soul and you two were able to make a connection. |

"A core of coal and the starch is within me." To me, it is like Chris is sayin that a core (central or most important part of anything = heart/soul) of coal (perhaps his once light heart has become like a coal, being hard and blackened) and the starch is within me (we use starch to stiffen stuff) so it is like he is saying that his ability to harden his heart is found within himself. What do you guys think? I just wanted a crack at it. The first time I heard this song, I didn't like it that much, but after I listened to it a few more times, the passion and pain comes through in Chris's voice and it just blew me away! I just love the part where he sings, "But even now that you're not here I climb these mountains of houses every night I say your name and I wish I could have done things right." I feel your pain!!! I think we've all been there before where we wish we could have done something different to save a relationship. |
