| AFI – The Nephilim Lyrics
|
The Nephilim were supposedly the offspring of 'the sons of God' and the 'daughters of men'.
They were therefore some sort of inbetween angel and human race who happened to be giants (although they were originally called giants because of a mistranslation of 'gigantes' which means 'born of Earth').
Nephilim means 'fallen one'
'Like an angel with two broken wings' - Nephilim are like angels but on Earth
'Like a devil, meant for better things' - devils are fallen angels, as were the 'sons of God' that produced Nephilim but humans are better than demons
As for the rest of it I really don`t know
All a bit weird but that`s the bible for ya - be sceptical of it.
Anyway, of course it`s a great song - it`s on the best album ever.

I think this is another one relating to sleep phenomena - inanimation (stillness), comfort, somnambulance (sleepwalking), night. I dunno. But it`s one of their best. |

| Rise Against – Six Ways 'Till Sunday Lyrics

It`s hard not to really feel the end part. And throughout the song it has some of the best self-explanatory lyrics in punk music. I never tire of this song - everything about it rules.
I miss the person that you were but I don`t miss you
That line strikes such a chord w/ me.
Nuff respect. The Unraveling is an album packed w/ special moments. |

I don`t think the 'smile' is in there. Just a groan. And what are the backing vocals in the breakdown? One of the things that makes AFI special to me and takes them apart from other bands is the way they use backing - even if it`s just 'ooohhh' like in Days of the Pheonix. |

This seriously is one of the greatest songs ever made. And the first time it really hit home for me was when a bunch of my mates from Romania performed it acoustically. Incredible. |

Great song - with one of my favourite basslines. Fun to listen to and to play. Fairly obvious what it`s about: wanting to be famous and not wanting to work for a boss you hate in a job you hate but needing the money. |

Same kinda feel as 'This Secret Ninja'. I get the impression that as much as AFI appreciate their fans, Davey likes to keep himself to himself. Similar in some ways to Kurt Cobain.Jade and Adam are the more 'fun' characters. |

Not a bad cover. Most bands would probably have ruined the song but Dexter knows AFI too well to do that. Doesn`t have the edge of the original which is one of the best songs by one of the best bands ever. |

'Twenty four hours spent wishing that the day was never ending' is a lyric that has really stuck with me. I just think it`s great. Not sure what the song is getting at but I think it`s something to do w/ nostalgia, society and moving on. |

| AFI – Morningstar Lyrics

A lot of AFI songs have religious under/over-tones this one has an obvious relation to the devil (which I don`t think Davey actually believes in). But it`s written in the first person and relates to himself and their is a connection with the 'Ghost upon the stage' to Days of the Pheonix ('the circle of rage, the ghost on the stage appeared'). How it all fits together I am not sure and I don`t think it really matters. It`s just part of what makes them so great. Anyway, beautiful song, great ending, love it. |

He didn`t live under a bridge long term - just a few nights occaisionally. I can`t remember where it is but after he died loads of people went there and wrote loads of stuff on it - along w/ the stuff he`d written there. Fact. Whatever this song is about, that did happen. |

To call this nine minutes of bland moaning is far off-target. I think the sentiment of it is a bit over-the-top but it`s still an incredible song. One of my mates said it does drag on a bit but still told other mates to get me to play it to them (being in England they`re hard to come by) and did appreciate - which you have singularly failed to do - that there is a sodload of talent there. Ben Fold`s Five are no way near as good as these and as for the 'cheese' comment just leave it. But I do agree w/ you on the point about the emergence of emo. PULL YOURSELVES TOGETHER. I love emo - but there`s no need to internalise what you hear. You`re too young to care so much about these kinds of things. Anyway - `nuff said. Great band, incredible song, excessive emotion. |

I heard that this WAS written about the time he spent living under a bridge after being kicked out of home. He went to live w/ his school principle but sometimes wanted to get away and would spend a few nights under the bridge. Might not be right but it makes sense. |

I hate love songs but this is a special piece of work. And they`re a special band. Absolute genius. 'If I Die' is an incredible song, too. 'If yoU C Jordan' is a cool song and 'Bad Days' was the one that first got me into Something Corporate. Drive-Thru records is a great label. Check out Rx Bandits` 'All the Time'. Back to this song, I think the lyrics say all they need to and the referencing is brilliant. Especially the subtle touch of the Konfusion/Konstantine thing. First class. |

| Grade – The Ineffenciency Of Emotion Lyrics
| 23 years ago
|
|
All Grade songs have the feel of an epic to them: like mini operas, ignoring the standard form of contemporary music. The way the interchange between screaming and singing is used is brilliant - similar to Thursday. Every section of this song brings something new to it - a great work. I think a lot of it is about the struggle to be vocal about how you feel and what you want while others say them easily but might not even mean it. Not often do I find songs that I can relate to but this one I can in a real way. The title appealed to me, the lyrics say something without being too obvious or too deep and the way the song progresses is just amazing. I think they view emotions in the same way I do. |

There are a bunch of things I love about this band and all of them are encapsulated in this song - the title, the lyrics, the singing, the screaming, the intro, the syncopation ... It`s not actually my favourite Grade song but it`s one you can really get into and feel it. If you like the screaming, try 'The Part You Left Out' by Planes Mistaken for Stars. The meaning? I think it speaks for itself. |

I think this song is based upon the book and the witch trials because many thousands of Wiccans were killed by the Catholics. Well done for noticing that, Ruby but it is naive to say 'ie Salem' as that was just the end of years and years of it. Of course there is more to the song than historical reference but that`s the base. Magz - proud member of the Despair Faction |

Days of the Pheonix is mainly about their days playing at the Pheonix, as division2ronin mentioned. It probably does have more to it though. Great song. A mate of mine once said it has an air of triumph about it and I can feel it too. Quite quite special. |

| AFI – God Called In Sick Today Lyrics

Although it seems to make sense, I doubt this song has any real relation to God or Jesus as Davey Havok is a Wiccan. See Malleus Mallificarum for his view of Catholics and I think a lot of this song is in the same vane - about how the evil of persecution of his people in the past has been forgotten and largely ignored. This was the first AFI song I heard and is one of my favourites along w/ Days of the Pheonix, Midnight Sun, At a Glance, Morningstar and This Secret Ninja. |
