OK OK no one has mentioned what this song is ABOUT??? does anyone know??
this song is about a girl that chris knew. their families went to the same town every winter, like a winter house kinda thing. anyhow, he and her had this thing that apparently was pretty deep...but one time he got there to find out that on the way there her flight had crashed and she died.
read it again and you'll notice. the whole part about out of his arms and into the air, the flight. yeah.
my friend saw him perform this song and apparently at the part "..in this long forgotten beach town we once shared" chris got all choked up. apparently its pretty personal to him.

i dont know if anyone has noticed this, but its pretty easy to hear in the song
- in the last 2 refrains, he sings "im never speaking up again...ill use my hands" in the background. its obviously in reference to "my big mouth" which comes right before this song. very cool the way he did that. |

somehow this turned into an emo or not emo debate...im just saying that toad is an early indie band. but, as far as emo goes, you are right, it is an offshoot of hardcore and punk. its more emotional and the lyrics matter more...so the natural progression was towards the stuff we have today which people still call emo - like saves the day and the get up kids (which pisses people off). im not saying its right to call it emo, but most everyone DOES call it that...so let it go. |

heres my take on this song - and its a rather simple one. he likes this girl, and he wants her to know that...because he thinks life is pretty much "prison" and only love will make that bearable. so he wants her to know he loves her cause he wants to know if she loves him and if she can save him from this "prison" that is life.

ok, if your gonna be technical, those are indie rock. good point. maybe what we are really saying...is that toad was an early indie band. the line between indie and emo is blurry at best and basically just depends on how you make the distinction....think about what we're saying, not how we're saying it.

something just hit me...."first star i see" ended talking about static prevails and then i thought about clarity. "static prevails" (ie, the confusion previals), and then "clarity" (ie, understanding) Anyone ever thought of that??? i cant beleive i didnt before now.
anyhow, i think everyone is just about on about this song...i love when he sings "..yet fading..." for the last time and his voice gets that almost crying tone to it, then the hushed "vacation...you take them..." comes in. its amazing. so emotional.
and is it just me, or the last time he sings that "vacation..." line, does he say "...if you want them, if you want ME..." ?? anyone else hear that? that could make a lot of sense. |

its not about suicide, hes in a plane....leaving sky harbor airport. "so here i am above palm trees...so straight and tall. you are smaller getting smaller but i still see you...."
the plane just took off and he is looking back and can still see the person....of couse thats the literal take of it. symbolicly im sure it means a lot more - like he will never really forget this person.
its definately a very meaningful song, from some sort of love, or spirituality or both. thats seems to be a theme in clarity....and this is a fitting way to end it. "dont be afraid, if you can beleive then we can do it - the only voice i want to hear is yours" could either be about a love or god? and the "i am but one small instrument" is kinda like him saying "i am just a man, in a big world, do you remember that?"
there is so much more, but its in the music - that 14 minute progression and build is the song...even though there are no lyrics there. its the feeling it portrays thats important. my favorite jimmy song i think. |

ok, LUCKY DENVER MINT is a "go on, your not better than me" song. its either right after a girl left him or some friend betrayed him or something and he is driving away thinking, kinda angrily "this time its on my own...minutes from somewhere else" and he is telling them, "sure, do this if you think its right, you'll see in the end it wasnt" You can se that in the line, "hurry go on ahead, good things wont let you wait" he is saying whoever is kinda selling out in a way, taking the easy way out. you can see that as he finishes the line, which i think is different than the lyrics listed. i think he says "ill catch up when you FALL...at home ill leave a dollar underwater keeps on dreaming for me" he is saying that this wont work out for this person and they will falter, and he will have the last laugh. he has dreams and hopes, his wish, that will come true because he is doing whats right.
"your not better than this not better why cant you learn" he's saying to this person, your not better than everyone else, your not better than the honest way of life, your not better than me, your dreams are gonna falter (when you fall), and mine wont...ill have them someday. |

i agree wtih bovelue (ann) - jimmy sets themselves above "she left me i loved her" music, which is all great...but jimmy's lyrics touch us on a different level. understanding is the key here, and although im sure some sort of love might be tied in, its not a relationship song. |

DOPEY was right about this song...its about something he has had in his life for a while, a relationship maybe...that was great but not completely great...and he had "hazed" himself to miss the things that were wrong...wihch is somethign that we all do. and now as the haze clears, due to something that happened (or things) he is realizing that he cant lie to himself anymore or just hide truths from himself anymore - its not going to work.
this song can hit us all hard i think...we've all been here. i personally think ive been here about 15 times or so. some worse than others.
the DRUGS are not drugs, they are the "butterflies" or the feeling of being in love that we all feel...the thigns that make us wanna defy logic. he's saying as these leave and as you lose this relationship, learn for the future. some things dont work. this was one of them.

as far as toad pretty much never sings a song that is directly about losing a girl, no they are not like emo....i think what i am saying, and maybe emo ezralite is saying this too, or maybe not - is that toad wrote emotional lyrics, and poetic lyrics, not ones that were polished over either. they were lyrics that you had to figure out, and it went along to music in a very poetic way. i would compare many toad songs to the "clarity" album by Jimmy Eat World, or some Sunny Day Real Estate. So perhaps indie is more the proper term...but whether or not Toad influenced these bands - they were definately ahead of their time. |

toad might be the first emo band - i went from listening to toad stuff to jimmy's "clarity" a couple years ago and right into the whole world of emo/indie. and the people who like bands like juliana and jimmy with me dont also like toad, which i dont understand...in 1989 they were writing this stuff, and it took this long for the rest of the world to catch up. toad is amazing |

this is such an amazing song, why has no one said anything about it?
the "spend" i think is past tense "spent"....little difference but means a lot to the song. very sad song. personally this i relate to my dad dying of cancer because its the first song i heard after he died. dont know what the lyrics were meant to mean...except that it is about regret.
the allusion is to the character don quixote, who was a guy in spain that was kinda off and dressed in medieval armor and thought he was a knight in like the 1800's. his horse was a goat i think and he used to attack windmills all the time. don quixote was confused and mislead in life - and very alone because of it, and i think glen is identifying himself with that. its a very sad song.
its like she, or whatever is gone, and he is still waiting to see the something that they wont show. the line "i spent too much time, seeking shelter - world without end, couldnt hold her" is very striking. its like he tried so hard to keep things controlled and contained, and in the end he couldnt hold on, there was no way he could have.

jeremy you are right....they are WAY under rated. everyone knows their songs, like 'all i want', 'somethings always wrong', and this one...everyone loves these songs but dont KNOW ABOUT TOAD! i dont get it. do radio stations just not say the name of the band? anyhow, iNclet, some of the guitar in this song is actually mandolin, so good luck.
this song is about the whole idea of a summer experience, explained in all its magic and foreign wonder once you return home to a real life where things arent so magical and your stuck at school or work. he paints the picture so well, better than any other attempt ive ever seen. "age six racer" by dashboard confessional comes close, but its a different image chris is painting there.
toad is amazing, and glen is such a wonderful song writer...way under rated. |

WHY DOES NO ONE TALK ABOUT TOAD?? arg.
anyhow this song is great...its him talking to a girl about her relationships. about how she tried to help him, or more than one 'him' but she never really could and it didnt help her either. in the end he kinda says "the guys you have been with have been lacking in something, and in truth - you are too" she is hurting inside. tried to help and nurture these guys who are going nowhere maybe because she wants to feel needed? who knows. sounds like a psychology case to me. glen is playing the truthfull friend here...the friend with the truth that hurts to hear.
i love the line "youd give yourself to anybody who would cross that line" like she would be with anyone who gave enough effort to getting her. she is needy. |

its about two people who are married but they dont love each other, or maybe she just doesnt love him completely. becaus she is dreaming of something else, either a real person or jsut an ideal..but they are married for some reason, but he knows she doesnt love him completely. really sad. |

both of you are right...but i think its more of glen saying "hey, what did we do to this guy? imagine if jesus was your brother and you knew him and loved him as the one you used to go play with and share things with. then everybody started giving him all this responsibility and praise and it got out of hand and he was killed for it" glen just wants people to look at the personal side of it, jesus was a man. i think his saying "will it be the end, or is he still ascending, but if he's all you say - would he fly from heaven to this world again?" is kinda him almost condeming those people. saying "this man died for you (or you made him die for you) and what if he wasnt really what you say he was? |

why has no one commented on any of these songs??? this song got my through a lot. the imagery of those things he talks about "the music in the bedroom, laugher in the hall" all those things. glen is so good at bringing out that side of himself...this song is obviously written to someone whom he loves and is away from (maybe because of touring back in the day) and he just wants her to know he is thinking of her and he will not take for granted what they have together, the dreams they hold. its a song about the dream of love and family, and that those things are important to him. its wonderful. |

anyhow in this song i always imagine glen being out in the snow somewhere just thinking about this relationship and perhaps life in general and just saying 'listening' to what the world around him and his feelings are telling him. its an acceptance song, he is saying its ok whatever happens, he feels so spiritually close to the world - he will embrace whatever comes.

i think brittners response is pretty good....an additional spin i would put on it too though is that maybe its something that is so amazing when they are together, but for whatever reason, she doesnt think he fits into her life.
i really dont like the "taken" instead of "naked"...but oh well, glad to hear he sings it "naked" live. that part is very interesting...i think he's saying - if he got to lie there naked with his girl it would be something he would buy the world a coke about. make sense?

this song is great...i think maybe he says "scream from the to of the roof" though? not sure...doesnt matter much either way. it might be "leave the hem out of line" flickerchick27, cause he's kinda saying, 'drop everything your supposed to do'. leaving a hem out of line is a bad thing to do.
this song, i dont think is about suicide as much as it is about leaving things behind. leaving A LOT behind it seems. its very emotional. it seems like he is finally just throwing things down and leaving, screaming from the top of his lungs, driving at about 130 down the highway. |

no one has ventured to determine what this song MEANS yet?? im surprised. first of all, im not really sure he really says "your ship": i think he might be saying "the ship" or just implying "the ship". who knows....
in any case, i kinda think its about his feeling responsible for the wellbeing of mankind. the ship is society maybe. i think he says "they follow me " also. hes maybe saying how all these people look up to him to help them and he only hopes he can do it, he's gonna try to slip inside the mind of a clown - ie, be optimistic.
but really the amazing thing about this song, as is with many others - is the music put to these lyrics. its amazing, and always something that gives you goosebumps and fills you with energy. between his voice and that electric guitar riff, and great harmonies...its an amazing song. |

haha, nice post Jesus Hates Losers - i have to level with all of you, ive never heard this song. I looked it up because a post for "For Me This is Heaven" said this song referenced it.
Now my point in posting is to agree with Jesus Hates Losers, NOT about this song because i cant say that cause i havent heard it. HOWEVER, im going to agree to what he/she said about people interpreting song meanings to specifically. The "this is just like my EX!!" reply is kinda lame...and in most cases - it isnt just like your ex. everyone has situations which they can relate to songs if they listen selectively to a song. Now im not gonna get on anyones case too hard because we all do it - make a song mean what we want it to mean. but for the sake of posting something on a site like this, you should be analytical and scrutinizing about it to some extent. Say what you think the song MEANS, like what the singer meant. Not how 2 or 3 lines in the song makes you think of Johhny or Suzy. Or if you have to talk about them, at least talk about the meaning of the song first, then add your own feelings in about it.

this is a tough one to get a meaning for. i guess its sort of about two people who didnt work and wont feel better alone, they need to find new people. he's kinda saying "stop trying, be happy for her and move on...she's happier with him and youd be happier with someone else". a good but hard lesson to follow.
the calls him everyday thing is jsut there to mess things up and complicate them...she doesnt want to be with him, but she needs to have him in her life. makes it more tough on him - trying to get over her. i had a situation like this once.... |

you all are right, tough lyrics, because in order to try to understand the song, you cant take them literally at all. lyricists dont write literally all the time. some things dont mean what they seem to mean and somethings arent there to mean much of anything at all. im not jim adkins but i have been a lyricist and singer in two bands of this style, and sometimes your lyrics just kinda follow the music. when jim adkins heard this for the first time, when this song came together, maybe he was just as in awe as we are when we listen to it...that happens you know. maybe he just sang whatever came to mind -whatever words flowed and fit. and so maybe he sang out of feeling and mood rather than plan.
if there is a meaning to this song - its simple. something has just happened and he is reflecting on it - whether it was love or understanding or whatever else i dont know. but he comments on how moments like that dont last, you just have to try to take in all you can (remember her face or how you felt). he is asking her, or god or something to "lead" him to understanding and truth and love and whatever else. he is looking for something where nothing is asked of him, where nothing is said of what it means, where no one is telling him how to feel. he is looking for something where things are understood. love? |

ok, heres the deal...i havent read ALL the responses for this song since there are like 50...but the ones i did read all talked about a break up. I DONT think this is a break up. This is a long distance, we can only see each other when we can, song. They love each other but it cant work right now because of distance and/or other factors. "and the time such clumsy time, in deciding if its time" he is talking about wondering when it will work, when its time to make 'the leap'. He doesnt really know how to go about this process because hes never done it before (im careful but not sure how it goes) And "you can lose yourself in your courage" - its easy to lose sight of reality in hope and courage. Um, the refrain talks about the short times they have and the long times in between. "can you still feel the butterflies, can you still hear the last goodnight?" is self explanatory i think. The mindless comfort part is the same as the courage thing. And the "this is whats she says gets her through it" part might be about how she justifies seeing him, maybe she has a bf but really loves him or something. or maybe thats how she justifies seeing him even though she cant see him most of the time "if i cant let myself be happy now then when? if not now when?"
its a song about two people who love each other but cannot be together the way they want to be right now...so they think and they plan and they see each other when they can, despite the hardships in doing so. And he asks her "can you still feel the butterflies, can you still hear the last goodnights?"....days or weeks or months after they've last seen each other, they still feel the butterflies. they are in love...not falling out of it. |
