It is NOT about marijuana, as many people think (a la Meet the Parents), for the simple reason that this song was around long before the drug culture of the 1960's took hold. It is about the loss of innocence in boys, the loss of imagination. Peter Yarrow said that it was partially a poem written by a friend in the late 50's lamenting the loss of innocence and partially his own writing (as well as the melody). Beautiful melody, I love the acoustic sound. One of my favorites since I was about 4. |

It is about both heroin (sucking darkest clear) and cocaine (chop your breakfast on a mirror) as well as what SSJVegeto said about the enslavement due to the addiction. Metallica has never been a drug band, but no doubt while touring they probably encountered the mad stoners, hence probably received a little inspiration from watching others. |

The Song is about how Paul's deceased mother comforts him spiritually in times of extreme stress (breakup of band, personal problems). He said himself that she was a devout Catholic woman. He also said that he intentionally left the term "Mother Mary" ambiguous because of Catholic devotions to the Virgin Mary. It is NOT about weed. People who think this song is about weed are probably the same people who think Puff the Magic Dragon is also about weed. |
