Actually, on second though, my interpretation of "In a story told she was a little girl In a red-rouge, sun-bruised field And there were rows of ripe tomatoes Where a secret was concealed And it rose like thunder, clapped under our hands. And it stretched for centuries to a diary entry’s end Where I wrote: You make me happy (Right) When skies are gray You make me happy (Right) Oh, when skies are gray and gray and gray" isn't right, or, well, actually, it's not complete. The story of the little girl in the field with rows of tomatoes whre a secret was concealed is probably talking about where she grew up, and the secret that was concealed was the abuse that she went through, and despite that, this girl still makes him happy. |

Kay, my two cents: First, the premise is that the narrator's in love with a girl who has someone else (whether it's an ex or not isn't very relevant XD) "Does he kiss your eyelids in the morning When you start to raise your head? And does he sing to you incessantly From the space between your bed and wall? Does he walk around all day at school With his feet inside your shoes? Looking down every few steps To pretend he walks with you Oh, does he know that place below your neck That's your favorite to be touched And does he cry through broken sentences Like, "I love you far too much"? Does he lay awake listening to your breath Worried that you smoke too many cigarettes?" Basically, he's saying "Can he treat you like I can? Like you should be treated?" "Is he coughing now on a bathroom floor? For every speck of tile there's a thousand more You won’t ever see but must hold inside yourself eternally" I think this is him trying to kill himself. Basically, bathrooms are a pretty common place for suicide XD And the "for every speck of tile there's a thousand more" might be some sort of reference to how he feels like he can't get out. Basically he's saying that the tiles are so incredibly expansive he can't possibly find his way out. "Well, I drug your ghost across the country And we plotted out my death In every city, memories would whisper "Here is where you rest" I was determined in Chicago But I dug my teeth into my knees And I settled for a telephone Sang into your machine: "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine You are my sunshine, my only sunshine" " I think this is him leaving, and trying again to kill himself. And in Chicago, he finally decided he was going to do it, but instead he just decided to talk to her to settle his grief. "And I kissed a girl with a broken jaw That her father gave to her She had eyes bright enough to burn me They reminded me of yours" This one I think is saying he met a girl who was in misery of some sort (probably abuse), and he felt bad for her, but she reminded him of the girl he's writing to (She could maybe have a similar situation) "In a story told she was a little girl In a red-rouge, sun-bruised field And there were rows of ripe tomatoes Where a secret was concealed And it rose like thunder, clapped under our hands. And it stretched for centuries to a diary entry’s end Where I wrote: You make me happy (Right) When skies are gray You make me happy (Right) Oh, when skies are gray and gray and gray" This part, I can only think that perhaps he's saying that even though he's so mind-numbingly depressed (and suicidal) because he can't have her, she's still the only one that can lift his spirits, despite the fact that it's because of her he feels this way. "Well the clock’s heart it hangs inside it's open chest With it's hands stretched towards the calendar hanging itself But I will not weep for those dying days For all the ones who left, there's a few that stayed And they found me here and pulled me from the grass Where I was laid" And this part I think he's saying that basically, time is passing, and he's not even one step closer to having her for his own, but because there's still time, he has hope to garner her affection for himself one day, and this idea is what gets him back on his feet. |

| I don't think it's directed to one person really...more like to the people whos lives are all hell, but the song's telling the people who say their life is horrible, that really, life is beautiful, and that they should look at the beautiful side of it. | |

| OK, now that I'm not about to pass out I can explain this better then what I last did. To me, this song is saying that human beings are selfish, racist, stupid, and other things. We refuse to help each other. And he is simply saying that if we do help each other, the potential of the human race is neverending. And if we don't? We'll end up destroying each other in one way or another. | |

| well, I've never seen them live...anyway, for people who cant make up their own opinions about songs! to me, this song means that we need to take care of each other or we'll end up all alone (hence "They will go away") | |

| I interprated this song as communication is a must for a successful relationship...now the relationship he is talking about could be any...from that of you and your mother, you and God, you and your best friend, etc. | |

| I think this song means that we should drop our pride..."stop the hate", if you will. If we all work together as one we are "Capable of all Imagined and all convceivable". But I'm not exactly sure... | |

| Somewhere I read that Maynard's mom died when he was eleven. This fits pretty well with the song "Eleven and she was gone. Eleven is when we wave goodbye." | |
