Jewel – Sometimes It Be That Way Lyrics 23 years ago
I'm surprised no one has commented on this song yet - along with Grey Matter, it's one of the best songs on This Way, lyrically and otherwise. She creates an amazing bunch of analogies throughout the tune...basically what it all comes down to is best said by Jewel in an Mp3 I have of her, right before she sings this live. "This is a song about breaking up...not that I was bitter....*sarcastically*"

Jewel – Grey Matter Lyrics 23 years ago
This is definitely one of my favorite songs, and probably my favorite song by Jewel. The lyrics are powerful (inside my skin I feel your tongue / it's telling me I'm dirty and licking my bones), it's very passionately sung, and the melody fits the words perfectly.

If anyone can find an Mp3 of Jewel singing this live, please take the opportunity and download it. It's very cute and makes being sick sound not so bad after all.

Dido – Thank You Lyrics 23 years ago
This song makes me smile. It's got an upbeat bounce to it, a catchy melody, and the lyrics are bound to bring back sweet memories because it's something almost anyone can relate to.

Lisa Loeb – She's Falling Apart Lyrics 23 years ago
This is a poignant song about teenage anorexia - and just goes to show how varied Lisa is in the subjects she writes about. Although the tune has a more melancholy tone than most of her work, the refrain will still get stuck in your head and you won't be in a rush for it to leave any time soon.
A summary of the lyrics: basically the song talks about a teenage girl who is secretly anorexic. The chorus "and they rise in the morning / and they sleep in the dark / and even though nobody's looking / she's falling apart" demonstrates how while we go on with our day-to-day lives someone that we know may be a victim of an eating disorder, completely behind our backs and unknown to anyone else. In the course of the song, her parents start to realize what is happening to her and are devastated by it. The song ends with a variation of the chorus that starts "and we rise in the morning...". Replacing the "they" with "we" puts us on a personal level into the song and refers more to our own lives and how the same exact thing could be happening around us.

Insane Clown Posse – Behind the Paint Lyrics 23 years ago
Is it judging a book by its cover if you assume that a "band", group, whatever, that sings lyrics like "fucking hoe, I want to gut your throat out, die bitches die" needs to start writing in a diary and take anger management classes? Is there goodness in this verbal diarrhea? I guess I'm just not "deep" enough to understand it.

Rufus Wainwright – La Complainte de la Butte Lyrics 23 years ago
Beautiful, beautifully sung song. Rufus' training in opera obviously came in handy for this piece and definitely shines through. I'm not sure if he is fluent in French or not but his pronounciation is wonderful. Even if you can't understand the words it's a great song to just listen to.

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 23 years ago
Maybe I'm the only one who thinks this, but I find the Rufus Wainwright much better in general. Buckley's voice does nothing for me - it barely even carries the tune - and I find that the simpler, arpeggio-based piano background in the Rufus version does more justice to the meaning of the song than Buckley's various echo effects and out of tune string instruments. The song is gorgeous either way, but it's what Jeff Buckley does with it that makes it barely able to be listened to.
