Hmmmm I wonder if the book 1984 has anything to do with this song. Clearly a social/political song pretaining to the basis of the book 1984 of governments controlling society and thus individual lives. Being put into the context of western society I see it basically as a call to think for yourself and not take everything you hear from the media and political leaders for granted as being true as well as to act for yourself do what you think needs to be done rather then being complacent and letting things get worse and worse till we end up in a world like this. Really heavy and great lyrics. Damn good song |

Oh ya and i do agree with gothqueen everyone can interpret songs differently, basically what i was trying to get at. But man Johnny GT ignornace and belligerency knows no bounds. First of all all of your claims are unwarrented. Especially that religious people have nothing to live for. Quite the oppossite in fact because they actually believe in something and have heaven and God to live for. You on the other hand actually have nothing at all to live for but "blackness". And i suppose you know the truth about death right? did someone tell you? did you go and find out and come back? NO. You don't know shit, which puts you in the same position as pretty much everybody else. Your being like religious people who try to force their views of reality and life onto other people. I'm not saying God exists or christianity is right, far from it just because their is no proof that God exists doesn't mean he doesn't. I've got no proof but i also have no proof to discredit the existence of God either. SEcondly why are you so against gays if it weren't for all your religion bashing I'd swear you were an extreme Catholic who sees gays as unholy sinners who will burn in hell. Hahaha i could write about this shit forever but im sure most people already get or have the picture.
And to deal with the sell -out issue just listen to TOOL's Hooker with a Penis (it's about selling out duh) |

I think everyone has just about summed up what this song is about. It could be about God/faith (not neccessarily pretaining to christianity), about some other person, a relationship, himself which i personally think it's mainly about or all of them. Simply put this songs rocks. |

Even though i have a hard time getting a set meaning to this song I can always seem to relate to everyone of his songs, especially this one. But to me this song is basically describing how "This world wears you out" and even though he had a number of things going for him things still go to hell whether their to his own faults or not, usually it's a bit of both |

hahah yea, the music video does suck. I especially dislike having the voice overs in the song, totally ruins the feel of the song. But hey music is meant to be listened to first and fore most. Still thought it was pretty funny - Bakini Bandits (hahaha) and the store clerk whose name is Maynard good stuff.....but not for this song. |

Another one of the better songs off the artist in the ambulance. The best i can really make out of this song is basically summerized in the line - "lift the veil, it's not medicine" medicine being a false sense of purpose or reason being given to you as truth or comfort (from whomever you want/feel, Gov't, religions, people etc..) and the overall obsurdity of this tactic that for some reason has been so successful. I dunno maybe i'm way off.... |

Yea, this song is pretty awesome. I mean it just incapsulates the whole process (at least for me ) of writing and makings music.
"I generally like music that makes u think not just dumb bull like this LISTEN TO TOOL." (Inept13)
-I listen to Tool (Tool being my most influential band both in music and life) and i have to dissagree with you 100%. on everything you said (except for "listen to Tool" everyone should give Tool a listen) But to say Thrice has no talent!! I mean thats just being stupid. I play guitar and hey im pretty good (hehe) and i can tell you without any doubt that they are talented, some of their riffs are fucking crazy. It's cool if you don't really like the music or can't relate to the lyrics and crap but just because you don't doesn't mean they're talentless.

I would also like to comment on the number of people who are complaining about the meaning of the song and that they don't agree with it. From there they say that the lyrics don't matter just that is sounds good. ARE YOU PEOPLE IDIOTS the lyrics are just as much part of the song as anything else. Songs are supposed to be taken as a whole (meaning everything for those who don't understand) and not to be weeded out and taken apart and then saying you like because when you do that it's not really the same song. You don't have to agree with the theme of the song and if you don't you really can't say that you thimk the song is good. |

First off let me explain why most or some people are against organized religion. Religion is created from a belief, thats right belief and religion are 2 different things. Basically religion is a marketing plan to gain support in order to gain money for the church (YES I KNOW MANY CHURCHES DO PUT THE MONEY TO GOOD USE) but many churches don't (I know because I've actually seen it). Some churches, Christian churches have even gone so far as to take away civil rights.
Always when you try to understand an issue like this it is EXTREMLY important to keep and OPEN MIND. Also the church does have a brain washing effect but only to a certain degree. From before the times of the crusades to present the Church has stated that if you support the church (give money) you will have more chance of going to heaven. This is a HISTORICAL FACT.
They say you must go to church at least once a week, in order for the church to pound it into your head and to a degree become ignorant to other beliefs and cultures. OF course this doesn't happen to everyone because not everyone is stupid. However there are many good values in the church as in all religion as well as some truth. You just have to be careful to see that your not getting fucked with. There is a difference between walking a spiritual path and following a religion.

To comment on adamizer's comment (up a bit). It's not that people are dependant on the "words of others" in this case Maynard it's that it has come to influence us and inspire us. Now I'm sure most of these peolpe are intelligent enough (as they listen to tool) to take everything from anywhere with a grain of salt and apply it to themselves in their terms. Tool has helped me incredibly in writing music and in thinking. |

Yes, okay The battle of........ is ratm's worst album but it's only bad compared to their previous albums. Second of all how could a ratm sell out their the exact opposite of what a band that has "sold out" sounds like. Also it should not even matter if the mass media thinks that a band has sold out, you yourself should know better. For people whining about actual godd bands "selling out" (SOAD, NIN, TOOL, A PERFECT CIRCLE) should listen to Hooker with a penis by TOOL. |

Yes, it is most likely that Maynard's influence or meaning to this song is about his son, but that doesn't mean its definite meaning. The song means whatever we preceive it to be. So the H. could stand for almsot anything. Not that I personally think it does, it all depends on you. |

Maynard is obviously anti-religion and that is based upon the fact that most (if not all) religions somewhere in the middle have a market plan attached to where you are supposed to give away your money will to only later to find out that the persons a child molesting fuck head screwing you for another fatass dollar. Still most people don't realize and remain blissfully ignorant. |

The way Maynard says he write lyrics is by expressing what the music means, and in this song he does it flawlessly. The angle from which I precieve this song is that this person who you love is destroying you but you cannot bear to be without it them in your life. |

When i read the lyrics to this song without the music the song held a completly different meaning, like the ones above. But when i actually listen to it, it makes me feel better, and that everything is alright but before you get there you try to look through life as somebody else someone who you are connected to.
