Can you please take a step back for me and forget about Blink 182 for a while. I want you to have a think about what punk is first... Punk means thinking for yourself, Punk is the fight against government lies and greed, the fight against being told what to do. It's about individualism and non-conformity. (Well there’s a few of the basics anyway) With that stated can we please step back into the issue at hand... What is Blink 182??? If you were to fit into the punk stereotype, then you could say that they are 'sellouts' or 'posers', just because their music has become popular. Although, to do that you would have to completely ignore a few extremely importants pieces of information. Blink have not changed their style. They have improved in their ablities. Tom and Mark both sing better and play their instuments better but the style in which they write has barely changed. They write about ‘teen issues’ but they have done that since they first started so that is a dead argument. To anyone calling them ‘posers’, I have to query on why that would even be said. Blink have never (or hardly ever) openly said “We are Punk”. The only basis upon which someone can be called a poser is if they openly proclaim that they are punks and then turn around and be anything but a punk. Someone before said that they only respect blink because they got him into more politically based punk music. That’s a job well done by Blink 182. They have stuffed their reputation within a large majority of the punk community, although they have helped the punk community by getting more people realizing some of the things that punk deals with. Whether Blink did that intentionally or not, this is a good thing so if you were really a punk and weren’t one of those wankers that think that punks are an elitist group, then you would see this as a good thing. So in conclusion, Blink 182 have become quite a popular band although I refuse to believe that they are a pop band. Pop bands don’t have the same style as Blink and they don’t have the beliefs that are shown in songs such as “Anthem Two” and “???”. Although they may be seen as betraying punk by becoming an ‘MTV Band’, they have also helped to bring more people into the scene. After all, Punk is NOT and elitist group. I feel that if a majority of people who bag Blink 182 got out of this stereotype, jumped off the bandwagon and actually thought and acted like a punk, as they claim to be, then they would realize that deep down, Blink were punk, are punk and will always be punk, no matter how popular they become. After all, punk isn't music, Punk is a way of thinking... A way of life. |
