Forget overblown generic love ballads; this is the sweetest, most sincere, love song ever.
"We'll travel round the world just you and me punk rock girl.: Simplest, most earnest declaration of love ever. I'd totally fall head over heels for any guy who said that to me. |

I think it's basically about being used/mistreated in a relationship (fry me in a pan, love to watch me bake, etc), and really wishing it would be perfect like TV instead. I'm just wondering though, what's the significance of the title? Anyone have any ideas? |

This is one of the saddest, truest songs I have ever heard anywhere. I like how it denounces the idea of rigid gender stereotypes without beating you over the head with its message. |

PS_I_love_you: I hate the Madonna version about as much as it is humanly possible to hate a song. Woodmeyer was implying (As a joke, at least I hope) that this was the remake and Madonna's was the original. Which would suck for her if it was true, cuz this blows her version out of the water any day. |

Hmm... guess where I found out about this song? Yes, yet another Perks of Being a Wallflower fan. (I finished reading it for the second time roday.) Looking back now, this song makes a whole lot of sense in the context of the book, because of how it's about depression and suicidal thoughts. And it just seems very fitting to Charlie, how it's kind of slow and quet and beautiful, in an unusual way. Further proof of how good the characterization is- I've never been able to really attach a song to a book character like that before. |

Such a beautiful, bittersweet song. What else can I say? The lyrics speak for themselves. |

I'll agree to anyone who says that Madonna is in fact a true artist, but that doesn't excuse this pathetic excuse for a cover. I suppose I'm slightly defensive, since I have a sort of emotional attachment to the original (There's a lot of traditions surrounding it at the camp I go to), but still, she runied this in so many ways I don't even know where to start. The one good thing I can say is at least Don McLean's okay with it. |

On CD, this is definitely not one of the better songs overall in Rent; actually, it's right up there with "Contact" in my least favorites list though. However, if the person playing Angel is good, it's perfect on stage, with all the dancing and everything. Casual listeners and new Rentheads could probably skip this one on the CDs, but on the stage it's funnier and it fits in perfectly. |

This is definitely up there with One Song Glory and What You Own as my favorite song from Rent. Such a great celebration of diversity and acceptance. I love the line "To being an us for once instead of a them"-- something about that just seems to fit my friends and I very well, even if it doesn't make much sense when you think about it. One warning though; even though this is one of the best songs in Rent, there are certain parts of it (e.g. the "sisters" and "brothers" parts) that don't work unless you're seeing it in person, or you just know the show very well. Other than that though, this is one of the best celebrations of life in general that will probably ever be recorded. Listen and be happy. |

| Rent – I'll Cover You Lyrics

To me, this song is just the ultimate, pure idealistic approach to love, and that's why it's great. Angel and Collins are both HIV positive, neither is sure just how much time they have left to live, and yet they love each other this earnestly. In most other shows, or as a standard pop song, this would be cheesy as hell, but because of the circumstances of the characters singing it it becomes beautiful and somewhat bittersweet.
Extra Note: This song also seems significant to me because the love between Collins and Angel in Rent seems more realistic to me than most situations you ever see on stage or in movies, gay or straight. Angel's death is one of the only moments in theater/movies that has ever bought me close to tears. |

Agreed muchly with the first reviewer. At first glance, this song looks incredibly offensive, but when you look closer and see how many times it contradicts itself, you realize what a brilliant satire it is. If you never thought twice about all those people who say "God think this and that's why it is" before, than this song would definitely make you reevaluate your views. |

I agree with Jackie 1228 that there are a whole lot of good cover songs out there, but I just don't like this version of this song that much. I don't care if the New Radicals were a one hit/one album wonder, to me their version just has a lot more emotion to it. This version isn't completely horrible though, and I give Mandy some credit for trying. (Besides, the lyrics are still cool no matter who does it.) |
