I recently saw Ani in concert and heard this song for the first time. I'm surprised no one else has considered it noteworthy. I thought it was fun, but still along the same line as much of Ani's other songs. |

This is such an unusual song for Ani to cover. Has she given any statements about it? I would assume she was using it in a facetious tone. |

Nietzsche, I totally agree with you. Unfortunately, I think the song in general tends to give off that under-the-influence feeling, so it might be counteractive! |

Worldly perspective... this song was made big in Spain by the Vodafone commercials. These commercials really emphasized the importance of having fun, which in turn emphasized that meaning in the song. |

Could it be that the song isn't about a prostitute as much as about a woman who has been raised with a pretty depreciative view of herself?
The horses seemed to symbolize every girl's dream. You know, "I want a pony." |

Hey I don't think we should all jump on anyone's particular interpretation of the song. If the good captain says it's about AIDS, it's none of our business to say they are wrong.
I had never thought about that interpretation, but had always assumed the song was referring to depression and estrangement. I think the possible AIDs aspect of it is interesting. |

| Counting Crows – Anna Begins Lyrics

OK let me give this a shot...
We all know the narrator is in love with Anna, or at least likes her a little at the beginning. Meanwhile his friend pressures him to intensify the relationship. Perhaps this means commitment, perhaps it means sex. Whatever the next intensifying step is, Anna isn't ready for it. Nonetheless, pressure from the narrator convinces her to give it a try. Completing this step convinces the narrator of his true feelings for Anna and allows him to admit them, but it has a negative effect on her. Instead of the peace and love the narrator has found, Anna begins to talk in her sleep (presumably from nightmares) and generally drift out of the relationship completely.
I guess that would make my interpretation one of peer pressure or relationship pressure. |

Fond memories of Caceres...
Don't worry, it is also the theme song to the MOVISTAR commercials in Spain. Very popular. |
