VNV Nation – Left Behind Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with much of what's been said, I'm glad others appreciate this song too.

There's something really special about Left Behind, Ronan's vocals are vulnerable and open. At first listen, it was too much for me. Too topical and moving, I felt I had to push it away because I couldn't deal with it.

To me the lyrics sound like a dialog with one's self. Trying to convince yourself to move on and not dwell in pain. Knowing how hard it is to find light in the darkness, fearing and doubting if it will ever come. Really, all you have to do is open your eyes and it wil be there waiting for you. The hardest part is believing.

That's what VNV is all about for me, fighting the temptation to give in, trying not forget hope.

Codeine – Loss Leader Lyrics 18 years ago
A loss leader is a marketing term, items are sold at prices below costs. The cheaper items draw more customers (usually for repeat visits), profits are made up on what consumers buy along with the loss leader. I don't know if this has anything to do with the concept for the song, a metaphor for something maybe. Boiled down, it could just mean something cheap and attractive, that draws you into a trap of sorts.

From the lyrics directly, I get the feeling of being trapped deeply in a state of despair and desperation. A feeling that you have no control over anything, that you're merely repeating the same pattern in hopelessness. "losing sight of the shore"

VNV Nation – Holding On Lyrics 19 years ago
I think the meaning of "Holding On" is connected with the theme of futureperfect, in which our past hopes and dreams of a better world have not come to fruition.

"
And one day
I woke to find
The future had no place
for me
I was unwanted in a world
that with my hands I helped build
Where once was honesty and pride
I now stand broken and alone
Just a shadow
of what I was meant to be"

To me this is a reflection on the past and a realization that the promised utopia of 20th century has not come about today. Those that built great the city structures and labored in factories, have lost their once important jobs, they have aged. Now they are unwanted, the pride they once felt has faded away with time. Essentially the people who contributed to the building of the "brave new world" have been discarded, because they are no longer necessary.

"In this prison made of lies
We see what it is we want to see
And find comfort in this
broken hall of dreams"

In the modern world, filled with twenty-four hour entertainment and mindless distractions, we no longer strive to build a better world. In the denial of the modern age, hope for a better world has long since faded. The narrator sees this new world as a prison because the hopes and dreams he once believed in, will never be realized.

If you interpret the song this way, in the context of the futureperfect theme. It makes sense to view the narrator as a person who is isolated from modern society. Someone who is so deeply lonely, he wants to cry out in the hope that someone will hear him and understand. More than anything he wants to heal his bitterness and wounded trust. He wants to believe in something again, to move on from the lost hope of the past.

"I believe in you
Will you believe in me?
Or am I alone
in this hall of dreams?

I think this song is so powerful because the lyrics communicate a moment of epiphany, in which the narrator must choose between giving up and reaching out. He chooses to reach out again, in hope that someone will believe in him too, so that his loneliness may end.

This is one of my favorite songs because its so sensitive and honest. What ever meaning is taken from it, the feeling of vulnerability is what makes "Holding On" so striking. It's so difficult to ask someone else to believe in you, to trust. I find that idea intensely emotional.

Skinny Puppy – Last Call Lyrics 23 years ago
I think Last Call is about generic engineering or cloning and possibly even experimentation on partially developed humans, "cancellation is the feel
respectfully to never be."
"Slow descending so slow to drown" means that humanity is reaching beyond our place of understanding into something that cannot yet fully comprehend. Humanity is slowly killing itself with technology as our lives become more complex and fraught with difficulty.
We have no idea we're going with this kind of research
"ask direction no correction map the course to end the way."
"walk among do seem to care on the surface righteous air" some of the doctors who are studying genetic engineering seem as if they care for people, really they only want fame, recognition and to advance scientific knowledge at all costs.
"Mesh the fine nucleic bond crawl between the chromosome on the top of what's become a two-fold generation boom" this is the best support for a genetic engineering/cloning theme to this song.

Skinny Puppy – Hexonxonx Lyrics 23 years ago
This song is about the abuse by major corporations
of the environment and all life. Especially companies
like Exxon, "...budgets that burst with oil crude...no compassion common criminals seek asylum concrete pillow exxon dreams..." I think this quote explains
the meaning of Ogre's lyrics.

Note: If you haven't noticed removing the last x from Hexonxonx will form a title that sounds like hex on exxon
