Charlotte Church – Danny Boy Lyrics 23 years ago
Pretty much regardless of who's singing it, this is one of my all-time favorite songs. It's about a mother who sends her son off to make a life for himself, knowing only too well that chances are she'll be long dead before he does well enough to come back to her. But her own death is unimportant to her. It's sooooo sad. It's the best song to sing when yr having one too many Guinnesses.

Plain White T's – Radios In Heaven Lyrics 23 years ago
The lines "if they don't have radios in heaven/ here's what I'll do/ I'll bring my guitar/ when my time is up/ and I'll play for you" are some of the most heart-breaking lines I've heard recently. It's amazing that such young people can come up with such good lyrics. I can't wait to see them again later this week.

Thursday – Paris in Flames Lyrics 23 years ago
I've read that the song is about "Paris Is Burning," too. But why can't it be about all of those things? Has any of you actually even seen the film!? The song can be about the film *and* alienation *and* being disaffected *and* the urgency to become involved in your community. It's been a long-ass time since I saw "Paris Is Burning," but if I remember correctly, at least one of the transwomen interviewed in the film was found murdered with no explanation. So the song could be about how we as a society are so ready to distance ourselves from other people--to alienate each other--and how this distance can ultimately lead to society as a whole going down in flames. And his solution is to be involved, to make connections, to make nameless faces human again.

Thursday – Concealer Lyrics 23 years ago
This is my favorite song right now. Geoff's lyrics are so intense it's nearly impossible not to feel the words tearing you up inside. My favorite lines are: "In an open book that no one reads/ A misspelled word that no one knows." Those lines are just genius: something is obviously wrong and out in the open for everyone to see, but nobody is willing to acknowledge it. I guess it really is easy not to talk about the big elephant in the middle of the room.

Thursday rules!!! I can't wait to see them again next month.

The (International) Noise Conspiracy – A Body Treatise Lyrics 23 years ago
I love this song. Noise Conspiracy are one of the raddest bands around, mostly because their lyrics are some of the most thought-provoking, imaginative and just plain *relevant* words I've heard from a band recently. And how many bands tackle transgender issues in their music? This band totally deserves some kind of award.
