Jack Johnson – Inaudible Melodies Lyrics 23 years ago
even though I think silent movies are a superficial theme in the song, I believe it has a deeper meaning (and I could be wrong about all of this!) I don't think I explained the philosophy very clearly, but if you were to read it for yourselves I think the meaning would become much more clear (at least it did for me!)

The refrence to Plato's cave is actually a very famos philisophical reference...the jist of it is the men trapped in the cave were conditioned to believe the lies that the'd been told their whole lives, and when they were confronted with the truth, they were closed minded and unaccepting of the possibility that things were different than they'd appeared. When you look at the rest of the song from this reference point, it seems clear (to my interpretation) that this song is about the tv/media serving the same purpose today as the cave served for Plato. It is my understanding that the oh-so-brilliant Jack is saying that we're getting pumped full of lies ("yellow bellied given names") and we accept them without question ("frame lines tell me what to see") when we should really be more skeptical of what we're believeing (much like his view on self-perception in "Posters"). In Plato's "Parable of the Cave" the person or power that got the men into the cave in the first place decided what they were exposed to, and I believe that the reference to Eisenstein is equating him to that role. (again tying in the theme that we only believe what we see on tv) I love Jack don't you...he's so philosophical!!
