An abstracted meeting of Billy and Mary-Charlotte, maybe - as I understand it, they actually met in a local swimming pool, so that's not quite as dramatic ;)

The Von Bondies – The Fever Lyrics 21 years ago
Well I've never heard this from anyone else, but I know most of the songs on Pawn Shoppe Heart are bitching about SOMEONE, and to me this is just Karen O all over. Evidence! :

-The song is called "the fever." The debut album of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's (Karen's band) is called "fever to tell."

-"She Don't know what she's talking about." Kind of harks back to the title link again - what exactly is she telling us? I'm not a YYY fan, so it kinda resonates ;)

-"Yeah she's running on empty." I think this relates to her name, Karen O - that big old empty zero like O on the end.

-"She can't sing, she just screams and shouts." a fair accusation in the eyes of anyone who has heard karen's 'unique' vocal stylings ;)

I think the video is genius, and explains everything you need to know. The girl /does/ want to be with him, and he her, but they are kept apart by something (symbolised by the fat man in the video). Billy enters the forbidden circle in the video as an act of defiance and to show how he isn't scared of anything because she loves him, even know he knows it means certain death. Its basically him saying, "You don't have to be afraid, we have each other, and to prove it I would die for you."

anyone ready for an alternative interpretation? good.

Its been argued/confirmed/denied again multiple times over the years that Mellon Collie is a concept album based on a day in the life on a teenager. Personally, I'm inclined to agree, and as such songs like these take on a meaning to me probably a lot different to what was intended.

This song conjures up a very strong image of a typical day out for me in London. A group of mates drinking in a park, getting very sloshed and telling loads of weird and wonderful stories (there seems to be a romantic slant to this concept album idea; a teen's life mixed in with an almost medieval set of beliefs)

Basically, to me the song is one of these teens conjuring up a very weird and wonderful tale for their friends while drunk, a love poem to the toilet. Yup. He's drunk, he needs to go badly, and so he makes up a song about the 'ol porcelain. The line, "Without a care in this whole world," amusingly creates an image of him relieving himself in various public places (a fountain, a bush etc.)

Very wrong and abstract, but hey, this is what it means to me, and I know I'm a sick sick person ;)

The Smashing Pumpkins – For Martha Lyrics 23 years ago
I want this played at my funeral so very badly, but I'm not sure I could do it as soon as it was meant for his mother. I just have this vision of my coffin being lowered into the ground amongst a cloud of dry ice as the psychadelic guitar chorus kicks in ;)
