"He grew a beard as soon as he could to cover the scars on his face" is not a reference to jesus. Yes, Jesus is commonly depicted as having facial hair but other than that jesus has no connection to this lyric. The general grew beard to hide his scars. Possibly because he subconciously knew that what he was doing was wrong and wanted to hide the repercussions of his balligerant life, or maybe because he wanted to cover up the ugliness of war. |

I think the guys wrote this song with no religious insinuations in mind. Jesus was no general, he wasn't "fighting the god fight", he wasn't recruiting or leading his people in anyway, in fact he wasn't even a leader; he was a messenger, an 'assistant general'. It's man that glorified him into being the head of his own religion (christianity). I think this song was writin to be taken at face value. There's this general with a "heart of gold" that has spent his life making a name for himself as this war legend so his a history of success, and success for one side means death for the other. This general has an epiphany and realizes that everything he is and everything hes done is evil. He dreams about the battle to take place the next day, which is a usual occurence seeing that the men are gatherd around waiting for him to tell them what he drempt and predict weather or not they're going to do well; however, instead of dreaming about his boys success he dreams about the men fighting on the other side. He realizes all the pain and suffering he's causeing the loved ones of these men his side is killing isn't justified by any cause. He realizes "this fight is not worth fighting" not becuase the cause is any less deserveing but because taking is a life is never justified. So he sends his boys home to go live their lives and enjoy every second becuase he realizes that life is more important than any conflict. However the general can't go back to just living his life because he has realized everything he is and all the respect he has earned has been through the senseless slaughter of people that were loved, and are missed. He urges his boys to go make lives for themselves in ways that deserve respect. Weather or not Dispatch ment to, they also succeded in making the soilders look like submissive, mindless, sheep. They took the generals advice with no explination, they gave up the fight they were so gung-hoe about two seconds ago because they were orderd to.....what does that say about our 'young men'? On a lighter note it's great to see all the response this song has gotten, too bad dispatches other songs don't get this much attention. they've put some really great material out there both musically and lyricly so give it a look. The generals amazing but if you wanna get philisophical there are some deeper songs that should be givin a chance. |
