Poison the Well – Nerdy Lyrics 23 years ago
This song is pretty sad, and not in a good way.

In a very, very bad way.

The first time I saw Poison the Well, they were on tour with Rufio, Strung Out, and Rise Against. I had heard that Poison the Well was "like Thrice". I was waiting in anticipation for some awesome music...and was sorely disappointed. I couldn't understand the screams, and the instruments were all just being banged and crashed, it was like monkeys playing. I wrote off PTW.

A few days ago, I decided to check them out again. After all, it's hard to understand ANY band that screams, especially if you don't know the words. So I went to this site to get the words to a few songs, and this was one of them.

I listened to it, and immediately hated it. Screaming with a rhythm is fine with me, but I couldn't find any such rhythm with this song. I thought, hey, I can overlook that, the instrumentation is pretty cool. And the words...oh....

The lyrics to this song stir nothing in me. First of all, it brings nothing new to the angle of love songs.
"Thinking about your embrace
and how it makes me feel
I just want to feel this way forever "
"Time slows down when
you look at me
I'm infatuated with this
Infatuated with you "

This is like EVERY love song ever written. The only parts that I found well-written and expressed were these below.

"Sleep on portraits painted as perfect as you
Why have I been given the chance to fly
When I'm not with you I feel lesser alone
Why have I been given the chance to fly away "

This, to me, is the best part of this song lyrically, but rather weak when you hear it. Flat voices...it just doesn't stir me the way these lines could if they were sung.

I also am new to this sort of music, but is there any reason why a love song should be screamed? Why is he angry? The song is addressed to the girl, so...? It just seems stupid.

Poison the Well's "Nerdy" - alright lyrics, sucky execution.
And don't give me that "emotional" nonsense. This song is about love, right? Well, if the emotion expressed isn't love, what kind of sense does that make...?

And before people jump down my throat about "if you don't like PTW, why are you posting?" remember that there's this wonderful thing called "opinion."

Dillinger Four – Farts Are Jazz To Assholes Lyrics 23 years ago
"I kind of feel I've lost the words and the reasons
I sit at home, Drinking by myself
I get a headache from the things I believe in
The simple truths can be so absolute"

(He sits at home and drinks, symbolic of going against the grain and fighting prevalent ideas. He's lonely because the ideals he believes in set him apart from others. He comments on simple truths being absolute, because when you take issues down to their basic level, and make a choice either way, that can define entire aspects of your life. It can set you apart and against others who choose differently. When you break things down far enough, all controversies become black and white, and you have to take a stand on one side of the line.)

"I'll take my chances on the morning paper
A little bit of twitching and a workout maybe"

(He'll risk going outside of his house, his philosophy, and see if anything in the world has gotten better, or if he can see the world as a better place then he does. It might take effort, but perhaps he can change his views, and become a little more accepting of others. But, is this a good thing or a bad thing?)

"I've got nothing to say, It's not the first time
I don't care, So do your worst cuz
I've got nothing to say, Got nothing to say"

(If you don't take a stand on anything, you will be accepted by everyone, but loved by no one, because a person without opinions is nothing.)

Thrice – That Hideous Strength Lyrics 23 years ago
hey, who is a better songwriter:
davey, AFI
dustin, Thrice
cedric, at the drive-in and the mars volta
the dillinger four guys

i say cedric. harder meanings to decipher, but i think better poetry than thrice. davey's stuff is just gothically vaguely romantic, and while good, isn't on par with the others. d4 has a more personal message than thrice, so i like them better too.

The Mars Volta – Cut That City Lyrics 23 years ago
no, i download a song by Mars Volta called cicatriz, but it was labeled cut that city by kazaa

i think at the end, "go to the lexicon you sluggard" means go to a dictionary to find out what the song is about, otherwise you're a lazy...sluggard.

if you will.

but, Nick, wasn't your message about no messaging a message?

Moronic hypocrite.

By the way, how many people actually like thrice, instead of liking them because they want to be considered deep?

thrice fucking roxorz, i suppose.

Thrice – That Hideous Strength Lyrics 23 years ago
Innocently asks "Why do people pretty much discuss everything but the song's meaning on a site devoted to song meanings?" and thus violates the site's intended purpose, but THIS time, it's for a good cause. Really.
But I'll get to that later.
First, the necessary SONG MEANING, as analyzed by me.
**********************************************
The title: ((The "Hideous strength" is the strength of the unfeeling, ghostly masses that attempt to silence all radicals. Instead of passion-killing despair, he manifests his frustration as passion-sustaining rage, and so the song is screamed.))

"Oh, that I could scream and the world would stop and listen" ((realizing that no one can scream loud enough to make others truly listen to you, shows despair. As if he knew something important, and couldn't get anyone's attention...)) "and these scars could speak in volumes but who has ears to hear or eyes to see" ((He has experienced some violence, and is scarred by it. Perhaps he has been in a war, or a fight. He wants to warn others of the dangers, the horror, of conflict, but then again, no one listens and no one sees until it happens to them. Maybe the scars are emotional: he has had relationship problems, or lost a loved one. He was in pain, and now, after healing his pain, he tries to tell others how to heal their own pains. But, in the depths of our misery, who can listen to the healing words of others? The only one that can help you is yourself, and so his well-meant advice goes unheard.
Mental scars: He has thought to much. He is hurt by the daily drudgery of life, and has finally found a way to rise above it, and lead a happy life. He wants to share the secrets of his happiness with others, but no one listens to his radical thoughts. Again, only you can free yourself.
And, isn't it possible that he has also ignored advice in the past? Isn't it possible that he has missed important information? Maybe he also has unhearing ears and unseeing eyes...)) "Again I scream, But my voice is buried in an unearthly silence, Like in nightmares when ghosts steal your breath." ((He tries again to tell everyone the secret, to no avail. The masses ignore him as no one has ever been ignored, because this time he has something truly important to say. The unhearing masses are unenlightened, dead, like ghosts, and their ethereal bodies are not touched by his screams. They do not absorb the scream (recognize his thoughts) or echo his scream (agree with his thoughts). He cannot reach them in any way.)) "I pray that power be not in my words But in truth that supercedes the mind of man"
((He knows that he cannot reach them, and hopes that the truth he knows is instinctive and can eventually be realized by everyone. He hopes that the radical nature of his thoughts is an attainable goal for everyone, that it supercedes physical containment in one person. Eventually, he hopes, everyone will understand.)) "And our dead hope, and our blind faith in means that look to justify the ends." ((Maybe the ghostly masses want something more. Maybe they have an inkling of understanding of his ideas, but they get it wrong. They put their lives onto false paths that they hope will lead them to enlightenment. These paths though only trick them into believing that they are enlightened. These paths are designed to make them feel good about all the things they have done. They are false. They are dead.)) "I feel a presence in the room. I feel cold fingers close around my neck." ((The ghosts finally hear his screaming, and they enter his room to see what he is saying. They only hear incoherent screaming, the screaming of a mad man. They try to silence him with their ghostly weight. They hear and see but do not truly hear or see...)) "With out you I am lost." ((Without his ideals, his passion, but more importantly, someone who believes in his ideals and passion, he is lost and his struggle to help others has failed.)) "Let mine eyes not fail with looking upward." ((Meaning one: He must harden his resolve and keep trying, looking upward in optimism and iron will. Meaning two: He must look upward to find someone who can help, for he cannot do his task alone. He looks for God, or an elder, or another enlightened one. He looks for help. Meaning three: He feels he can accomplish his goal, and is on his way, but only if he keeps trying and keeps his eyes on the goal ahead.))
**********************************************
That was my analysis. Here is the rest of my post.
**********************************************
Punk, blowing up, and selling out: Very much of punk is dedicated to social change or idealistic struggle. If these social reforms are to take place, the general public must be made aware of them. I think that massive popularity would be a good thing for most bands that strive to affect change. If MTV played their videos, and they were paid, this does not constitute "selling out". This is blowing up, an increase in mainstream awareness of the band and, hopefully, their stance on social issues. It is how the popularity is used that constitues whether or not a band sells out. If they speak of the struggle of poor people, and yet do not use their newly-gotten money and popularity to help them, and use it for selfish-gain, then they have compromised their principals and sold out. Money isn't evil. Popularity isn't evil. It's how they are used. I think Thrice's popularity is deserved, as they have a good set of values and a message that all should hear. I think all political bands should strive for popularity, but without compromising principals, because then they could become a force of change.

Now, if only a band and their image becomes popular, instead of a band and their message, this is annoying to true fans and supporters of the band. However, the superficial fans still support the band, and their money could be well-used. The band and the true fans should not scorn or ostracize or ignore the superficial friends, but gently guide them to a deeper knowledge of the issues and ideas the band presents. In this way, blowing up becomes a good thing and all can be happy.

People should not try to define punk anymore. You can't. It used to mean stripped down, simplified rock, but now it has as much diversity as rock itself.

Being on MTV: this doesn't mean you are a sellout, unless it contradicts your values. It means that you are popular.

NFG and GC are not less punk for being on MTV. NFG sings about girls and girls, and GC sings about other stuff, but they are not anti-corporate. They are not contradicting their message, and they both wanted to be really popular anyway.

Punk is a stupid word anyway, because no one can define it. Musically, it has no more meaning than "rock" or "pop", so obviously there are conflicting definitions.

Thrice – A Subtle Dagger Lyrics 23 years ago
i don't think i ever said government. i said society. they are two different things you know, and like any good poetry, this can obviously be taken on more than level.

and cerulean, think about this.

What if the government could implant a radio into your mind, one that broadcasted their ideas in your own mental voice, so that you couldn't distinguish their ideas from your own. You wouldn't even know that they aren't even your ideas, and gradually you would come to believe them.

Now, tell me that they haven't already done this.

(I first heard that idea from a book called "The Illuminatus! Trilogy" by Robert Anton Shea, and you might like it.)

And tell me NOW, that institutions like religions and goverment and society don't have the power to infiltrate your soul.

"No man is an island..." so what makes you think that there is something inside of you that is untouchable.

the enemy is inside ourselves? I don't think it was always there. I don't believe that people are naturally self-destructive or self-doubting. I think that prevalent culture poisons people that way, in effect creating an enemy inside of you.

And, what may I ask is "so juvenile" about gov't bashing? Just because you disagree with a sentiment doesn't mean it's wrong or stupid or childish, does it?

And if gov't bashing is juvenile, what's so wrong about stupid, low, childish things?

What is wrong anyway? If any of you read this again, then please respond because I'd like to know what you think about this.

and cerulean, i liked your analysis, but it didn't look deep enough. What does "being human" mean to you?

Dillinger Four – Define "Learning Disorder" Lyrics 23 years ago
things in quotes are lyrics
things not in quotes are my comments
puzzle any confusions out by yourself

"LISTEN UP, SIT UP STRAIGHT, THAT’S THE ONLY WAY YOU’LL GET A BREAK"
(Obviously here, d4 is talking about school. We all learn in school that to sit in such a way is the "only way to get a break", because it is the "only way to learn")
"SITTING STILL AIN’T SUCH A BITTER PILL FOR GOODNESS SAKE "
(Sarcasm here. D4 aren't too big on sitting around listening when they could be actually experiencing things. It's sad that we have to sit still--
"FOR 12 YEARS AND IT WON’T BE THE LAST TIME"
--the twelve years is all the way to the end of high school, and even after you sit if you want to get ahead in life. If you don't sit in college classes, then you don't get a good job, you don't advance in life. It's sad that those that sit still, doing nothing, can get ahead in this world where those that are out in the real world, working and experiencing life, cannot.)
"AND I SHAKE EVERY TIME THAT I THINK IT THROUGH
OBEDIENCE WAS THE GOLDEN RULE"
(Obedience is the one thing we are taught above all, from day one. The difference between teacher and friend, adult and kid. It seems wrong that this should be the command to be followed above all. Shouldn't we follow our own hearts?)
"AIM SO LOW THAT YOU CAN’T MISS YOUR MARK"
("Aim so low...mark." is talking about the watered down standards of average American public education. Did you know that in some European countries, public education is better than private? Appealing to the lowest common denominator in schooling is wrong. If a bright child is forced to sit in class, must they also be forced to learn under their ability?)
"AND YOU PLAY THE PART SO LONG
YOU FORGOT WHAT YOU ARE "
(You are told that schooling matters, the way you spend most of your early, formative years is important. You are told this so frequently that you fall into their system of materialism, where you must get a good job, must get lots of money, must get lots of stuff. Is that the only use for your education? To earn money?)
"HAD SOME FRIENDS, PLAYED IT STRAIGHT, IN THE END THEY STARTED TO RESIST "
(The story of growing up. All kids start out caring about grades, in the end, many do not. They discover that they don't like the schooling system, or they've found better ways to keep themselves happy. They fight the establishment, because now they can think for themselves.)
"THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD IT NEARLY BROKE THEIR WRISTS, AND NOW THOSE WRISTS ARE SLIT "
(They tried to carry all the unwanted responsibilities that were shoved on them by the educational system, and couldn't. They were raised to believe that if they failed at school, they have failed in life, so they killed themselves.)
"AND IT HURTS EVERY TIME THAT I THINK IT THROUGH
THAT WE LEARN TO EXPECT TO LOSE"
(we are taught that, even if we play it safe, play it as good as we can, do all the things that are required to get ahead in life, we most likely still will fail. This is horrible! We are taught pessimism in the guise of realism, taught to settle for our lesser dreams...taught that we won't get what we want.)
"AND CAN YOU WALK AWAY CAN YOU WALK ALONE
CAN YOU RAISE YOUR FIST AND STAND UP ON YOUR OWN?"
(Can you back away from the path that "education" has laid for you? Can you find your own way?)
"CAN’T LET THEM PULL THE STRINGS, THEY’VE HELD YOU WAY TOO LONG
CAN’T LET THEM TELL YOU WHAT TO THINK"
(Puppeteers (the teachers, the bosses, the authority figures) control the puppet (you), but the strings also support it. A comfortable slavery is still slavery, so can you support yourself, live by your own rules, and be free?)

Thrice – A Subtle Dagger Lyrics 23 years ago
"It infiltrates, insidious, it feints at love, betrays our trust in what we know, the truth we've found in all we've seen"
(Cultural standards and popular thinking often tell us to deny our inner nature and the true nature of the world around us, by telling us to suppress our feelings and true thoughts for fear of being ostracized. It "infiltrates" because cultural brainwashing begins at day one, "insidious" because it never stops, and will continue to work against you even if you know it is happening. This brainwashing and suppression of our true selves "feints at love" by pretending that it is for our own good, then "betrays our trust in what we've learned, the truth we've found in all we've seen" once we realize how we've been programmed into a drone of society.)
"Points to design, still our chests swell. We'll never find true answers from a wishing well."
(The "design": all of our cultural and societal brainwashing claims that it benefits us because there is a "big picture" in which these widely-accepted ideas are important. "Points to design" could also mean that the indoctrination may have some ideas right (right as far as revealing truth), but doesn't follow them through. Often societal norms are only half-truths that point the way to higher ones.) Our "chests swell" because, as we learn these societal ideas that seem to be so important, we begin to feel enlightened by our "wisdom", when in fact all that is happening to us is conditioning as we begin to turn into a drone. "We'll never find true answers from a wishing well.": the wishing well represents apathy and lack of interest in actually finding truth and wisdom, and this line tells us that if we want to know answers and truth, we must work for it instead of lazily assuming that it will come in time, as is the popular belief.)
"So feed us all another lie, to still our thoughts, appease our pride so we won’t have to change the way we see, we live, we love, we die."
(People, especially large groups (i.e. society, organizations based on ideas), dislike learning that all they know and believe in is a lie. This is most always true in the case of religions and political beliefs, and also true for ideas such as "right and wrong". Often the mere suggestion of an alternative mode of thinking is enough to enrage these groups of people. People are stubborn to the point of stupidity, because they come to identify with their ideas personally instead of revising them when something obviously better comes along.)
"Our lusts precede our blasphemy, our logic reads like notes from tainted autopsy."
(Lusts...for the comfort of believing that we are right and others are wrong. We lust after that feeling of ideological security, even at the cost of never knowing the truth. "Logic reads...autopsy" says that we will willingly muddle our own logic in an attempt to justify unjustifiable ideas or the way we defend them. It says that people will go to great, irrational lengths to fight for their adopted causes, and this isn't a good thing.)
"Our souls they speak of something more, but we can’t look beyond ourselves, we implore empty skies because our hearts hold room for no one else."
("Our souls...more" shows that we inherently realize that some of our culturally-implanted ideas and notions are wrong, and we know that there are better things out there. Unfortunately, the idea of solving problems alone is so deeply rooted in our psyches that we often refuse help from others, as is revealed in the line "but we can't look beyond ourselves". We create false gods that echo our beliefs, because this way we can feel ideological comfort and pretend that we are in the right ("we emplore empty skies because our hearts hold room for no one else".) Those words also seem to say that we can find god, or god-like qualities (i.e., knowledge and wisdom) in each other, but we refuse for the same reasons I previously stated.
"We extend our claws to grasp at shadows of the ideals we have lost, casualties of a subtle dagger buried to the hilt in our heart, blood on our hands."
(We finally realize that we are on the wrong path in all we believe, and we desperately "extend our claws" (try to stretch our minds to encompass new ways of thinking) to grasp for a different way of life, the one we might've had if not for our collective brainwashing at the hands of the tyrannical majority. "casualties of a subtle dagger buried to the hilt in our heart, blood on our hands" is the most chilling line of all. We are doomed in the end (if we realize our situation too late), because we have been ideologically and spiritually slain by the "subtle dagger" of the overbearing ideas of society. "Blood on our hands"...this is scary. We are all parts of society, and society wields the subtle dagger with which to deny our true selves...and the one most responsible for our spiritual death is ourselves. We have killed ourselves, so the blood is on our hands.)

Feel free to disagree, and post your arguments here.
Feel free to ask for clarification, as some of these things I've expressed are hard for me to put into words.

I had fun doing this, and I hope you take the words of Thrice and I seriously, because they're true.
