| Bronski Beat – Smalltown Boy Lyrics | 22 years ago |
| This song is obviously about running away from home, and though the lyrics are honest, and not particularly poetic but striking, his most haunting voice gives this song real feeling and meaning. | |
| The Clash – White Riot Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| I read on article on this song, and basically the song is about Strummer's participation in a riot at the Notting Hill carnival in 1976. The blacks were rioting at police oppression and Strummer was rebelling against authority. He realised during the carnage that he was wrong to join in "their" battle. | |
| The Clash – London Calling Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
This song is renowned in british culture for being about the Apocalypse. The song was written in the late 70's during a heavy depression and hence is very negative London was rebelling in fashion and in music, the clash were in the middle and were echoing the fears of the nation's youth. Strummer was dreaming about destruction and death as an idea to induce excitement from the monotony of the scene. |

| Sonic Youth – Tunic (Song for Karen) Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| I think this is about anorexia/bulemia brought about by the pressure of fame and necessity to be perfect before the media. All the people referenced in the song including "mum" are the people she's trying to reach out to for help. | |
| Sleeper – Shrinkwrapped Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
Louise, if you're reading, please don't take (at this time of typing) the fact that nobody viewed or commented on this song to heart. THIS SONG IS FUCKING BRILLIANT! It's simply a travesty that this song isn't more popular. |

| R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| "Losing your religion" is a term referring to getting drunk. It is a Southern expression because, as I understand it, the Southern states of the US are more religious than the Northern states. | |
| Duran Duran – Ordinary World Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| Check out the cover of Ordinary World by "Aurora", though both are awesome songs. | |
| Puff Daddy – I'll Be Missing You Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| This song is about the murder of Notorious B.I.G. and the ensuing pain that Puff Daddy felt following his friends death. Musically, this song is a remix of the Police hit "Every breath you take". | |
| Levellers – Fifteen Years Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| This song is obviously about a man becoming addicted to Alcohol and henceforth losing his wife and job. The pain of losing his wife and job is causing him to drink more to comfort the grief. | |
| David Bowie – Heroes Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| David Bowie was recording a new album in Berlin, Germany when he wrote this song. Apparently he saw, looking out of the recording studio window, a man and woman getting intimate on the infamous Berlin wall. The Berlin wall was heavily guarded, hence "The guns shot over our heads". | |
| Suede – Stay Together Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| This song's lyrics reminds me of the lyrics of "Waterloo Sunset" by the Kinks. I think, like WS, it tells of a love-affair between two young lovers in the cruel landmarks of a city. Their optimism in the relative pessimism of their surroundings. | |
| Alanis Morissette – Mary Jane Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| I saw Alanis talking about this song on VH1 a couple of years back. Mary Jane is the real name of a friend of Alanis who was going through a turbulent patch in her life. Mary Jane called on Alanis in the morning and Alanis wrote this song in the afternoon, after she'd left. | |
| The Cranberries – Salvation Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| This song is about not tying yourself to drugs. It costs nothing to be clean, in all senses of the word. | |
| Ian Brown – F.E.A.R. Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| Clever use of the word "Fear"! This song didn't take me until I heard it live. Ian Brown gives something to the song that it lacks when heard on TV. | |
| Doves – Pounding Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
Probably the best song I've heard this year. I think songs represents lying in a relationship, and rather than confrontation about the issue, he's waiting to she if she'll come clean. The line "I don't mind / If we never come home at all" could be interpreted as a statement of "If you own up, it won't get us back to where we were but I'll happy with that anyway". Quality song. |

| Green Day – Having a Blast Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| I suspect BJ has better things to do than write suicidal songs for other people. | |
| Ivy – This Is The Day Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
I think the song refers to a prostitute and her attempt at escaping from it. She's been up all night but takes hope in the coming of the morning. |
|
| Catatonia – Dead From the Waist Down Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
There is no harm in casual sex between consenting adults. It's natural, like hay. (We stole the songs from birds in trees) Our past sexual experiences influence our current sexual experiences. |
|
| Radiohead – Prove Yourself Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| Radiohead stopped playing this song on tour because they didn't like hearing the kids singing back "I'm better off dead". | |
| Blur – For Tomorrow Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| This is yet another stereotypical Blur song debating about the materiality and meaning of life. The violins are brilliant, as are Damon's lyrics "Modern life, well it's rubbish". I saw him later say on TV that if we couldn't understand that, there was no point explaining it. Enough said. | |
| Oasis – Cast No Shadow Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
I'm sure it's written about himself. Noel seems to only be able to express himself through music and his lyrics. He wrote this song on the same day as Wonderwall, I think, which contains the line "There are many things that I would like to say to you, but I don't know how". |
|
| The Smashing Pumpkins – Stand Inside Your Love Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
I'd been trying to write a poem like that for six years, Billy is not only underrated as a musician but also as a poet. I've said the line to myself a thousand times since, and every time I say it I get closer to believing it. "Who wouldn't be the one I love?" |
|
| Hole – Malibu Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
The song is obviously about Kurt. You can tell just by the manner in which she sings it. I still get a tingle hearing "Crash" at the beginning. (Help me please, burn the sorrow from your eyes) Courtney wants to help Kurt through his troubled mind (How are you so burnt when you're barely on fire?) Courtney was and is hated by Nirvana fans, and had to deal with it. Kurt took that burden to heart despite the irrepressible Courtney being able to deal with it. (I can't be near you / The light just radiates) Kurt went into his shell, culminating in his suicide, due to media interested in his music and life. All the focus was on him. |
|
| My Vitriol – Always Your Way Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| I heard this on MTV2 and it blew me away. The lyrics are abstruse but I take them to respresent the times when you feel you've given everything, maybe to a relationship, and it's not enough to provide happiness. Definetly an underrated song and group. | |
| Red Hot Chili Peppers – Scar Tissue Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| I read in Kerrang that he wrote the lines: "With the birds I share this lonely view" during recording, after going outside for some respite, and seeing the birds in the sky represented where he was at the time. The song "fell into place" after seeing the birds. | |
| Manic Street Preachers – La Tristesse Durera (Scream To A Sigh) Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| "La Tristesse Durera" means "The Sadness Continues" in French. They were Van Gogh's last words. The Scream is also quite a famous painting. | |
| Muse – Sunburn Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
I think it's about mans attraction to confidence. Even the most beautiful women have insecurities, but are only unearthed when you see beneath the facade of confidence. False confidence is unattractive, giving a guilty conscience. (She burns like the sun, and I can't look away) Her confidence makes her popular to be near to. (To break these endless lies, secretly she cries) She has insecurities and uses false confidence to protect them. Muse perhaps should have been born the 18th century and wrote classical music with Beethoven and Mozart. |
|
| Green Day – Having a Blast Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
I can't believe nobody has commented on this song. Maybe it's because Green Day's other work off Dookie overshadow it. To think that Billie-Joe has thought about suicide, seriously or not, disturbs me deeply. (So close your eyes and kiss yourself goodbye) (Loniliness still conforts me) (My anger dwells inside of me) Typical of BJ's simple but striking lyrics. |
|
| ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead – Another Morning Stoner Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
He's blaming his lack of creativity on the fact that she isn't stimulating enough to satisfy him, intellectually. (Are you asleep, are you in a dream) (Is heaven to you a perfect place?) (The look of sorrow on a sufferer's face?) The above lines imply to me that he sees the world in a deeper way than she. (You cursed the worlds I longed to save) Through her ignorance to life's beauty he can't express himself musically. (Why is a song a world for me?) Or How else do I explain how I feel without seeing the world the way I do? A masterpiece of a song, his opeing voice almost begging to the screamed finish, awesome drumming and cutest guitar riff ever heard. |
