| Based on seeing the video, I think this song is about suffocating yourself to ignore the fact that we are all hopeless. We can't help ourselves because we are the silent majority, so by holding our breath each day and quietly going through our lives we won't be a hassle to the power structure that keeps us together, organized and manipulatable. This song fucking rocks. Refused had a real message to tell, rather than the bullshit we're contantly exposed to, be it through school or television or popular opinion. I believe this song is about our inept instinct to follow the "norm", simple as that may sound. We are "silently sedated", numb to our own individuality; our emotions suffocate beneath the dominant mindsets of the ignorant power figures who surround, control and manipulate us in our thoughts and actions. We have no choice, an alternative to nothing, since when we raise our voices we are shunned and humiliated while smiling conformists glad-hand fellow weak-willed individuals. In the end, it is the comfort in the realization that we will all someday die that makes the day worth getting out of bed for. We are ruled by the instinct to prolong life (our "love"); although it is ludicrous and childish to follow the herd, it is necessary to do so in order to assuredly lengthen our influence and existence within our tradition-based society. Refused is saying that we are already dead, yet ironically it is life that pushes our dead existence forward. Hence, life support addiction. |

Maybe this is just the obvious meaning and I'm not looking deep enough, cause the title of the song doesnt really support my idea of what it means, but here goes. This song's about the brutality of war...The narrator is a soldier and he doesnt want to fight anymore (hence "Not throwing stones at you anymore. Your name your lies, and i don't wonder anymore."). He was trained with "sims that don't hit back" and now that he's seeing actual people die first hand he no longer wants to fight. Actually, now that he sees it, he wants to die himself (die like fucking mice do) showing how the soldier is just a pawn and useless like a mouse. At the end he just sees bloodshed and says "shoot me". |

I'm amazed that no one mentioned how fucking sweet the PIANO OUTRO on this song is... I listened and figured it out.. Another thing i've noticed about a lot of thrice songs (well off of IOS) is that they don't really have a repeating section, (like a chorus)...That's very evident in this song especially. I agree with Nothingface and Hellionchild...This song's about a person cheating/sinning/disobeying in some way, hearing their consience argue with them, ignoring it, acting on an urge....and (in the end) regretting the choice they made |

Good song by the way. I never knew the words were relevant and deep. Just sounded like noise. Oh yea one more thing - Joey Jordison is a fucking sweet drummer, he's ridiculously good at double bass. Slipknot only really needs 4-5 guys (bass guitar drums and vocals), not 9. The 2 so-called "percussionists" and the "DJ section" detract from this band musically, but i suppose they improve the image. Chimaira is just as heavy if not heavier but have like 5 guys. Cool song once again, first one i ever heard by them. |

Either way, there is not a single bad song on this cd or on Identity Crisis, every piece of material that thrice manufactures is incredible. Wow there are a lot of different arguments all going on around this song. I think its more about getting high too. He'll say a line, and then contradict it. This happens in a lot of his stuff. Why are people spelling "Kurt" wrong? (Kurdt?) I'm just curious. The last thing I'll say is that this is not the greatest song ever written. It's good, and this band was fucking great, but there are so many songs and so many bands out there that it is simply impossible to pick one song and separate it from all others as "the best". |

| One thing to say about the musical part of this song too - the part where Havok sings "this rage i will not let go" gets the song all off time (only to be brought back by the two hi-hat taps) and when Offspring covered it, they corrected that error. Kahuna: AFI is a sweet band, but their lyrics dont even compare to how deep Thrice's get. Now that I think about it though, Thrice won't sell out - actually, they really can't. If they continue to make songs like they have in the past, and don't change their sound. Some people find it too harsh to listen to, so it will probably never get radioplay. This band doesnt seem like its anti-MTV either, based on what they sing about (in a few songs, the lyrics are based on famous poems). I know that Thrice is the best band I've ever heard, and that it's the same case for many others. Whoever hears and likes it is privileged, and everyone else can live without it. These are just my thoughts, dont take any of it the wrong way. |

First things first: This song is great (not thrice's best) and this band is unparalleled. Dustin Kensrue is the world's greatest lyrical genius. His words and the music he sings to fit together flawlessly...It really is incredible. However, because this song made it to #1 of the the top 100 popular lyrics list, hundreds ignorant and misled people have probably downloaded this song and maybe 4 or 5 others. I'm afraid that Thrice may explode in popularity, and no longer be an underground phenomenon. This band (and they're hardcore melodic punk) is worshipped by its fans more than any other band I have ever witnessed, and if that devotion changes, it would be a very unfortunate scenario. As for the song itself, I think So Strange I Remember You tops all. |
