I think the entire song's significance is on that one verse. Forwards, it's telling you something to give you hope, but when you play it backwards it completely alters what you think the message was forwards. This song is awesome, not just from a lyrical perspective, but from every angle. Creative guitar lines, a nice drum beat, thumping bass; the lyrics are just icing over the musical talent here. But the lyrics are my favorite part of this song overall. "1977 was a long time ago. I dont care how things were I wont apologize. Fuck you." I read into songs a bit too much sometimes, but to me this means: If something (someone, in this case) is bothering you from a long time ago, it doesn't matter if you realize it wasn't going to work later on, or if you saw it before it fell apart ("never too late to be early"), things are different NOW, and you can't judge feelings on how they were. But whatever or whoever he's singing about won't forgive him, and he won't apologize because he believes he wasn't at fault ("maintain some scrap of integrity and certainty"). But when he ("the Alamo") was penetrated, the subject dropped all connections with him ("the white man/rainbow") and left him behind. He's hurt, but he doesn't need a person like that around ("For all I care you can be/early or/late whatever"). ...does anyone know what it's really about? |

I'm directing this comment to NIN7688: Corey and a few other members of Slipknot are going to make a side-project. Corey said it will be more melodical and based more on talent than Slipknot. The name of the band will be "Cloture" (or "Closure"...something like that) and they're planning stuff for the band already. I think they'll get more serious with the band after Slipknot releases their 3rd album later on this year. I think this side-project is gonna be worth it. |

This song was very difficult to make meaning out of, but here's what I got from it... In the first 3 verses it sounds like he's describing a beast that has come back from the dead and is now realizing how he died and where he is now. In verse 4 he begins his search for his Melinda (the only one he has forgiveness for; verse 7) and how the people reacted to seeing him in contrast to they acted when he died so long ago. In verses 5-6 he speaks of what he vowed to the townspeople or the people that killed him, and how they reacted to his return. The people now think of him as a legend or mythical person that arised from long ago; a martyr that they are frightened by. In verse 7 he describes why he has returned (for Melinda), and how he has no mercy for anyone other than his Melinda. In verse 8 he describes Melinda as powerful (She is waterdrops over the pyre). He tells of how she still hurts him after they are both dead and forgotten (A thistle in my hands; Stained and torn, aged and brown). She is innocent and always has been, he is the opposite and that is why he can't be with her (Virtuous shell with kindred innocense). I guess the last verse describes how he fell asleep from poisonous fumes, then awoke and started his search over again. He continues his quest to find his love, but he knows he won't find her, and his fate is sealed until he does. This could be either a very accurate view of the song, or a very stupid one. For me...I think it's wrong, but I always do. |
