I have felt this way. I wasnt looking for a relationship of any sort, maybe a nice fling, but this guy was really sort of pushy and made me feel weird around him, so much that I didnt want to even be his friend. I think that is somewhat like what she is singing about. |

I think it is really obvious that Maynard is talking about a friend of his that is an alcoholic artist. “There's a shadow just behind me,
shrouding every breath I take,
making every promise empty,
pointing every finger at me” I think he is talking about drinking there. Shadow meaning his addiction, pointing every finger at him would mean every one is blaming him and not trusting him because he is an alcoholic. “Murder now the path called ‘must we’” I think he is talking about how his friend doesn’t think drinking is something to frown upon. While society is blaming problems on drug and alcohol use, he has an amazing gift that is brought out by the same thing society shuns. “Jesus, won't you fucking whistle
something but the past and done?” I think he is saying how God made “miracles” happen in the past (according to the bible) but he doesn’t save us now. Obviously, “Why can't we not be sober?
