Yeah, I have actually always been convinced that this song is about Jesus... a lot more of Ben Harper's songs are than most people realize. However, I do think that it is a bit ambiguous, and a song is only what you really make of it, so think what you want. It does still make me think about people in my life that have died... |

| Silverchair – If You Keep Losing Sleep Lyrics

PS... one thing I do love about Silverchair is I feel like I've grown up WITH them, you know? By that I mean even musically, because I've moved beyond wanting to listen to the grunge-y type stuff (that I liked around Frogstomp and Freakshow) to a little more mature (Neon Ballroom remains to this day one of my top ten records to listen to - almost perfect from start to finish, really)... it's quite amazing really but I understand why people say that they liked them better before because, well, they were DIFFERENT, weren't they? but tell me who you know who is even remotely the same person they were twelve years ago...
ugh that was a rant, sorry, guys. |

oh my god this song is WILD... I literally can't think of anything even remotely like it. I thought I hated it at first but upon further listening realized I fucking LOVE it. The lyrics are fantastic... and I mostly agree with Persuasion, since we are on songmeanings and no one needs to hear how much I love this song without also hearing what I think about the meaning, right? |

Yeah, this song definitely seems to me like it's about someone who has lived their life vicariously through pop culture and spent their life glued to the tv or whatever and is now realizing what a waste it all was. That was a really long sentence but I think you get what I'm trying to say. |

I love this song. This is a fabulous discussion that everyone has been having about it as well... I think what I love about Modest Mouse so much is that there does seem to be this duality to their songs. They can definitely be ambiguous. I still haven't quite gotten this one yet because I do see the religious overtones for sure but I also see the whole death of a child thing there too. Maybe it's an aphorism? I don't know but the wonderful thing about music is they're putting it out there for us to take what we want from it, you know? |

| Modest Mouse – Gravity Rides Everything Lyrics

This song is about death. Pure and simple... just like a LOT of their songs. Hah I read an article in Paste this month that said something about "Issac's Captain Deathtrip's fixation on death" and it cracked me up cause it's kinda true.
But anyway, the whole thing about this song being used for that Mitsubishi commercial (among others I guess but I haven't seen them)... come on, guys! I guess the band has said that they needed the money. What is it about musicians that everyone just expects them to starve? It's unfair to criticize someone for something like this, especially since we know next to nothing about their position. Quit being immature and realize that if it were you, you would have done the same thing, particularly if you were broke as well. So shut up about it, folks. |

These lyrics are definitely wrong. It's "I never SUNK this low" not "sung this low" and also it's "one last ROUND to kick me when i'm down" not "one last bound" which doesn't even make sense. |

| Matthew Good Band – Giant Lyrics

The way I kind of feel about mgb in general is, be cynical until proven otherwise. By that I mean, most of the time he's not just saying "oh i love this chick, i'm such a sad sack blah blah" even if maybe on the surface it might seem that way. Yeah, this is definitely not a love song. By "how uniform your beautiful is" he means, how ordinary, how run of the mill, how just like everyone else. As in, it's not special or unique so it's not worth much. Beautiful on the surface.
But otherwise this song is difficult for me. I definitely get the feeling it has something to do with ambition, but I'm not sure what else. |

This song is about someone in a mental institution, I think. I remember Matt Good saying something about it once. I am pretty sure it's this song that he says that people commonly misinterpret. But come on, do you really think he would be that obvious to make the song about murder? That is really obtuse, especially if you are much of an MGB fan. |

| Matthew Good Band – Jenni's Song Lyrics

It seems to me that this is another one of those things that matt good tends to do where maybe there is some kernel of truth (or maybe not; you never know really)... but I think it is very telling and very odd that his wife is named jennifer... so is this about her? and how much of it is true?
because wouldn't you be kind of upset if your husband (or boyfriend at the time or whatever) took creative license to use your tragedy in a song.. and what is the context of all this anyway?
matt good is just such an enigma to me. he is endlessly fascinating i think and i'm not sure why, but it probably has something to do with the fact that a lot of his music touches and moves me in a way that not much else does... does anyone else feel this way about him? I'm not like obsessed or anything, it's not like i sit around thinking "wow i'd love to meet this person and be a part of his life" because i wouldn't... it would ruin the magic for me you know?
i don't know if that makes much sense to anyone but oh well. |

I think the line is:
"I was told, I was WARNED" not "I was wrong"...
but this is one of my favorite songs ever... it almost makes me cry every time i hear it.
I can't decide if this is about someone close to him dying or Jesus... it could go either way, but maybe that's what he meant by it - maybe it's supposed to be ambiguous. |

| Bright Eyes – First Day of My Life Lyrics

I think maybe the point was missed about the lottery bit. I think what he is saying is that he realises that love really is about work, and the give/take dynamic, not about just "love at first sight" it's always beautiful and perfect, you know? the odds on winning the lottery aren't so good but it does happen and i think maybe that is his acknowledgement of that, but that he would rather make it work, warts and all, than wait for that one-in-a-miilion, not very likely insane passion fairy tale love. Maybe I am reading too much into me but a song is only what the listener makes of it in the end anyway right?
Also, I saw the video and it almost made me cry. In one of those really happy smiley kind of ways. It was just so... pure. For those of you that haven't seen it and probably won't get to, it's just people (couples mostly) sitting on a couch listening to headphones and it's just so perfect because they really love each other. It's awesome. |

It's actually a song off of their album as the Rainbow Butt Monkeys (which is like, the worst name in the world, I know) called Letters to Chutney... same band (except for the drummer, who was replaced by current drummer Rich Beddoe), slightly different (funk) sound. So, shouldn't about half of these songs be listed under Rainbow Butt Monkeys? I mean, I know it's the same band and whatnot, but you know, they did change some. All joking aside, I think Finger Eleven is just incredible. oh and also, WOULD YOU LISTEN TO THE DAMN SONG??!!? It's very very clearly "Judith". I KNOW it says Tina in the liner notes, but sometimes (OH MY GOD!!) mistakes happen. They might have turned in their lyrics (because bands have to do that if they want them to be in the liner notes) before they happened to do the final mix on the song or something and maybe they changed it... it happens. Example: The Offspring. not a very good example, but on their self-titled, there are about seven lyrics that are not the same in the liner notes as the way they actually sing them.
it happens. |

So has anyone commented on how much Bob Rock fucking sucks? I love OLP and will continue to be nothing but a supportive fan, and I do think Gravity has a few shining moments ("Do You Like It", notably), but overall, I was disappointed in the direction they chose to take on this album. I was in awe of Spiritual Machines for months after it came out (granted, "Life" was a pretty low moment, though), and I was hoping and praying that they would continue in the same direction. It's okay, though. Bob Rock is NOT the right producer for them. I have a feeling Columbia Records had something to do with this... Maybe they were disappointed with Spiritual Machines' lack of success, even in Canada, where OLP is just HUGE? My advice: ditch sucky producers and Columbia... (heh) look at poor Mariah Carey!
(That last comment was facetious; duh, Mariah sucks, but she wasn't ALWAYS a BIG HUGE stinking pile of shit. Just a little one. Wonder if Tommy Mottola's gonna do that to Thalia too? She's also really awful. But that would be sad.) |

Yeah, but that was in Canada.... If whoever wanted to know what song it was they wanted lived there, that's different. But the only album MGB has EVER released in America is Beautiful Midnight, with "Going All The Way", "I Miss New Wave", and "Let's Get It On" replaced by Underdogs hits "Apparitions", "Everything Is Automatic", and "Deep Six", if I'm thinking correctly. The ONLY hit MGB has ever had in the U.S. was "Hello Time Bomb". But if the person with the question lived in Canada, it could be one of 2945703753 songs, because they've had a ton of big songs there. |

WE'RE ALL MEDIA WHORES! If anyone says, "hey, I want to be in a band but I don't want anyone to hear us or whatever because MTV is just SO wrong [which, yeah, it's definitely gone downhill]", they're lying. Everyone would cream their pants to fucking watch their video on TV, especially if it's shit that YOU'RE doing because you want to play it how you want to play it, and you're not changing... I hate all this talk of 'selling out' because it's extraordinarily overused.
And the thing is, some bands change a little because they're GROWING UP. Not necessarily to make money or whatever.
I am not the same person I was five years ago, or even one year ago, so why would you expect bands to not change? Change is life, dude.
By the way, the Distillers STILL rock my fucking ass off. So there. |
