If it is not true that Conor lost brothers in a bathtub, then maybe this song could be about himself, he uses the baby dying as a way for him to almost complain and explain how he is feeling without sounding "selfishly sick and self absorbed." The brother dying in the bathtub could be Conor speaking about the time when his depression first hit, maybe 6 years before. "Padriac my prince I have all but died from the sheer weight of my shame. You cried but no one came and the water filled your tiny lungs. Appear, my dear, and cry for me. It was six years ago today that I laid you in your grave, your sweet young skin was shining then too." I see this as what his mother is saying to Conor. Death is not involved exactly, but the mother regrets not getting him help for his depression when she saw him crying out for it. The grave could be his craddle and to his mother Conor is still the sweet, young, innocent baby that she laid in the craddle when he was first born. The name Padraic the Prince could be the name his mother called him to try and make him feel like he was special. I know that when you are in a deep stage of depression no good that anyone can say about you means anything. His mother may have wanted him to feel like a prince, but instead he turned to drinking. "And so tonight to celebrate I will poison myself. Another coughing, shaking fit in a bathroom that is spinning." When someone is depressed they are in a "coma" with no one around them. Conor could be trying to reach out to another and explain that he just wants someone to know what he is feeling and see what it is like to be in his shoes. This verse where he quickly jumps from talking about being in a coma to babies dying may show that he is the baby in the song, he will die and suffer and no one will ever hear him. This song to me is almost like a cry for help, a cry for others to understand him without actually being that song.
