Hey guys, im new to sm, but in no way to tool so here goes... I think this song is one of the few tool songs that can be taken somewhat literally. But, It still has multiple meanings like many tool songs do. It mainly is about communication in all forms. Not just religion. it also talks about communication between society and just ordinary people and the barriers we have to deal with that will either "cripple" or if we are able to see past will help us open up more and "rediscover." as someone stated before not all tool songs have to do with religion philosophy yes but not always religion. in a way maynard is a philosopher. The other meaning is clearly a love song, i mean come on yes maynard has a dark view on society and religion, but he is human too he has emotions such as love. The song is a about a collapsed or dying relationship that is being destryoyed by (watch it come into play again) thier inability to communicate. The whole album is themed about communications between religions, society, and even ones' self. even the title refers to it. Lateral in one meaning means communication between things, and us meaning us. so Lateralus the communications between us, and everything. By the way Maynard doesn't HATE christianity and he is NOT satanic, despite all the rumors he just doesn't agree with christian views. I beleive he has a right to his opinion as he was raised as a christian, so he has experience in trying to accept it. in a way i am in the same position, i am being brought up as a christian but i must say i have really gone against god and many times questioned my beleif of him. I went atheist for a while then someting happened that made me question again (i won't go into it). i would consider myself a christian i guess but im walking a thin line between it and questioning to mutch making me a doubter or atheist. and also if u read up on him it isn't just christianity he disagrees with it's mainly the concept of organized religion because many are forced into a religion by thier parents or whatever and are never able to really decide for themselves. |
