Thursday – Where The Circle Ends Lyrics 23 years ago
I'm a big music nerd, so if anyone is actually interested in the meaning of this song, read this.

Where the Circle Ends is a song that portrays society. Not necessarily about racism, fascism, or any other “ism” for that matter, but more or less represents everything we have become, and what we, as a society have turned out to be. This is in fact what society has ignored and how it has carelessly failed to concentrate on the matters on hand and the matters of every day life. This song will be broken down into five different sections. Each section will discuss the importance and meaning of that individual part of the song.
“Mountain ranges. Mourning red bay at the bridges stab up at the coming blue horizon. Grey slides loosely off rooftops lands on the Incan desert ground and dies.” This portion of the song is to bring out the beauty in the world and the intricate details of a sunrise and how shadows move and how they are so often disregarded. It is meant to explain just one of the every day happenings, that is usually looked over and simply becomes a normal part of the world. It tells us as individuals to remember to appreciate everything.
“A flock of little men touch down on the surface of the porch light. Bronze fist soldiers return to watch the twilight across the faces. Skylights ignite and explode scattering shards of April around the room.” This portion of the song talks about soldiers and how when they finally return home from the war and they get to feel twilight, where they do not have to be constantly scared of being attacked or shot at. It talks about how someone who has lived in fear and has been deprived of things that are so often taken for granted can appreciate those small things when they are finally returned to him.
“No one even lives here. We're too busy crashing our cars every morning at the same house, paving the same roads unwilling to walk them. And even when we extend ourselves, it’s only to be included in a world that's standing still.” This part of the song talks about how this world is too vacant of anyone who really cares and anyone who really wants to stand up and make a difference. It talks about how we walk through the same repetitive lifestyle each day and do not even attempt to make our lives exciting. Society sets goals and whoever sets those goals gets credited or applauded but when it comes down to it, no one will be daring enough to actually act upon those goals and make fantasy into a reality. And when someone actually rises up and is ready to make a difference he is put right back down, because there are not enough people that want or even care about making a difference.
“And so often we don't struggle to improve conditions. We struggle for the right to say "we improve conditions." And so often we form communities only to use them as exclusionary devices. And we forget that somewhere man is beside himself with grief and somewhere people are calling for teachers and no one's answering.” This is talking about how people simply go only as far as to get a right or to get an idea, but no one will take any action towards it. Society has its individual groups and organizations, but in the long run they simply end up moving people further apart and de-organizing the very building blocks of our schools, communities, and businesses. Society so often overlooks how unhappy individuals are and how somewhere there is a real use for these individuals and how somewhere they can contribute in a meaningful way to society and eventually regain everything that has been lost.
“Somewhere a man stands, walks across the room, and breaks his nose on the door. And somewhere these people are keeping records and writing a book. For now we can call it "The Book About the Basic Flaw Or "The Book About the Letter "N" or "Any Title That a Book About a Man That No One Cares About Might Have." And as we turn the pages we call out the sounds of nothing, the sounds of a vanishing alphabet. Standing here waiting...” This last and final part of the song talks about the individual person. And how most people do not care or even bother to recognize each other and this is why everyone seems so distant and this is why everything is so separated. But somewhere, there is someone who notices everything and everyone. And this someone has taken the time to recognize beauty and to care about the individual. This person or these people have not been found and we are left here waiting, hoping that someday someone will come and someone will care enough to pay attention to our seemingly meaningless lives. Everyone has the potential to find and become this person.
In overall this song urges individuals to make a difference and to rise up. If everyone believes in them selves, than anything can be accomplished. But society has lost faith in itself and rather than working for the good of society, each individual chooses to only concentrate on themselves and not to concentrate on what can be accomplished and what obstacles can be overcome or rather, what can make every individual happier with their lives.
