| Dave Matthews Band – You Never Know (Busted Stuff version) Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| before the album was released, i listened to just about every live version he had played, and yes, it always did sound like 'and if i die' and then in his little wail after that, 'ohhhhh welllll,' but on the album i do hear 'every fire dies...dies...dies.' | |

here are the 3-23-93 lyrics: i wont be so what will we wait and our reasons so away then we crawl out of our holes into the open air it takes us so long we cry away and corners they may fail i dont know what i see but i know its not fair baby say you love me i dont believe her waiting whether anyone would you call me up and say a lie so sad take me to come again and now im watching by and its hauling to the old way down we swing our hands and hope that everyone comes back i dont believe you saying i dont believe what youre doing here you tell me good intentions watch you hang from your tree i dont believe what you said and walking by my door i find all these smiling faces locked up and tied over rhythm of an old song i heard wild and freedom sail away again memories fall hey we feel so cold i never thought it was cool winter day not to buy by the head down low i say this wont tear me out that could do it for a week or more then be waiting by i dont care no matter what i want anyone to pour their soul out an open page crushed by a memory so my happiness fell away and tore my mind and darkness fell |

as far as i've been able to find, the lyrics have gone through three solid "evolutionary stages" - pre Summer So Far, Summer So Far (Lillywhites), 2002 tour. the lyrics above are the pre SSF ones (sure, these probably changed every night for quite some time). the SSF lyrics can be found at http://www.dmbml.com/music/lyrics/lillywhite.html way down at the bottom. the 2002 lyrics are as follows: Watcha got, watcha got In your hand Father said to Son I’ve got the whole world here, daddy ‘tween my fingers and my thumb. You take care of it please, For it’s the only one. But it’ll take me a lifetime, old man To undo what you’ve done. Undo what you’ve done. Oh come on now, the boy Now what would Jesus do. Shake his head like the angry mother spoke The boy and say, I did what I could do. You take care of these, For it’s the only one. And it’ll take you ten lifetimes, boy To undo what I’ve done. Boy shrugged, walked away, The man stood and watched As he was leaving. The boy just walked away The man stood and hold thinking. One hand is empty, The other hand holds the gun. Everything seems open, Everything is shut down, down, down Begin to (enter? end it?) Is it really just to go round, around, around And when it stop, yeah, its Nothing more than nothing more than My point of view. Watcha got, watcha got In your head? Your secret’s safe with me. Well, I found the truth My friend Let me whisper in your ear. Take good care of it please, It’s the only one there is Can I twist it, please, Can I give it just a little twist? But boy shrugged, and walked away, The man stood, and watched As he was leaving. The boy just walked away, The man stood alone twisting. One hand is empty, oh, The other holds the gun. Everything is open. Everything is shut down, down, down, No one is holding Even if, even if it’s (?), You never know at all, The ground beneath you’s nothing more Than one point of view. But boy shrugged and walked away, The man stood and watched As he was leaving. The boy just walked away, The man stood alone twisting. One hand is bleeding, The other hand holds the gun. Everything is open, oh, Everything is shut down, down, down No one is holding, Even if, even if you know, You never know at all, The ground beneath you’s nothing more Than one point of view. But boy shrugged walked away, The man stood and watched As he was leaving. The man just stood there twisting. as Brian Pace says in an article at nancies.org, these lyrics have sections that seem to deal with priest abuse (article at http://www.nancies.org/articles/020518.php ) |

| hmmmm meanings.... maybe Dave continuing his series of songs questioning how things have turned out in the world (spotlight, proudest monkey, monkey man). although the lyrics are amazing like always, what really makes me crazy is the complicated time in this song. the 3/8 with carter's duples going into the 5 is just insane. goes to show how dave has evolved as a songwriter. | |
