| Josh Ritter – Girl In The War Lyrics
|
The lines: "And I gotta girl in the war, Paul I know that they can hear me yell/
If they can't find a way to help, they can go to Hell." The way that I interpret this is a strong cry against war: St. Peter is often believed to control who gets in or stays out of Heaven's gates...I think that those lines are saying that if they (who "they" are is debatable...politicians, media, genearl public?) won't do anything about the war, even though he is crying out to them for peace, then St. Peter will see to it that they don't ever get pass him.
Harsh, yes...but so is war. |

i agree completley w/ shineyoudiamond. the line "a church is more than just timber and stone," says it all. the value of the church is not in the building, but in the people "saying i won't be a slave any more!" |

Can't believe no one has commented on all these new PS songs!...I'm pretty sure this song is my new official theme song. I especially love the lines, "But I'm easy, I'm open, that's my gift, I can flow with the traffic, I can drift with the drift" |

This song is so beautiful. Sometimes when I think of leaving home, I listen to this song and cry. The chorus is what gets to me. |

so, this is my favorite song on this album....though life wasted and gone are close.
i'd have to completely agree with the statements by t-crash and richie8092…pearl jam is definitely going down in history as one of the greatest rock bands.
this song is AMAZING live. |

| Bob Dylan – Ballad of a Thin Man Lyrics

alright, i just read what was said about the homosexual references, and that makes total sense.
but the way i always thought about this song, was that it was a reporter walking into some crazy party, perhaps one of dylan's post-concert parties or something...he's trying to interview dylan, but doesn’t know what to think about all the crazy things going around and is just completely out of place.
i could explain how i see it line by line but it would take to long...just listen to the song w/ that in mind and you can figure out what i mean.
but, an easy one to get started is "you walk into the room w/ a pencil in your hand..." he's got a pencil ready to take notes...you can go from there.
ps, i love the one-eyed midget line...it's pretty much amazing whatever it means. |

| Pearl Jam – All Those Yesterdays Lyrics
| 20 years ago

I have a friend who I think about every time I hear this song. She's an insomniac, and has an addiction to her various prescriptions, which she frequently takes too much of. Sometimes I play this song when she's around, hoping that she'll really listen to it, really listen to the message of the song "it's no crime to escape" and just let go of all those pills, and all those yesterdays.
I sometimes write songs about various people and situations in my life, just to vent...but I can't write a song for her, because Eddie Vedder already did, and I could never put it better. |

I absolutly love this song...especially the lines
"I just spent 60 days in the jailhouse
For the crime of having no dough
Now here I am back out on the street
For the crime of having nowhere to go"
Love it |

| Bob Dylan – Let Me Die in My Footsteps Lyrics
| 20 years ago
|
|
When I first listened to this song I thought it was one of the most beautiful and sad songs that I had ever heard, but I didn’t understand the full meaning of "let me die in my footsteps before I go down under the ground." Then I saw ‘No Direction Home’ on PBS and it described the fall out shelter explanation that Willard cited. It gave a completely different perspective and fuller meaning to the song, something that I could never realize before because I didn’t grow up in that era. Despite the obvious anti-war message, the more I hear it the more I realize that the song is not meant to be so much a protest to war as it is to be a protest to fear. |

This is such a great song; I can't believe there're only two comments posted. I totally agree with vipergt196 and disagree with AliWithAn i...How can you hate Neil Young? I also think it's a message to parents to take care of their children, and at the same time it's a message to children to look after their aging parents. |

i completly agree w/ aufbaul and hashish (haha...nice name, buddy) plus, it's a bob marley cover, so he can't very well change the meaning of a song that's already been written, now can he? |

I live in Indiana, but I go to school in Illinois, so I always like listening to this song when I drive over the border...It makes me feel like the song's about me. As for the thing that tomyart said, I've always thought that this song had some underlying drug theme to it, espescially that "wonderous apparitions" line...I dunno, that's just what I thought it meant. |

| Sublime – Rivers Of Babylon Lyrics
|
Like ameliabedelia said, it's from Psalm 137: Sorrow and Hope in Exile, Pt. 1. The whole psalm reads:
By the rivers of Babylon
we sat mourning and weeping
when we remembered Zion.
On the poplars of that land
we hung up our harps.
There our captors asked us
for the words of a song;
Our tormentors, for a joyful song:
'Sing for us a song of Zion!'
But how could we sing a song of the Lord
in a foreign land?" |
