I've always tried to think of the album as a some kind of story. The first part of King of Carrot Flowers introduces the character, the second part invokes the muse (as Mangum references in the liner notes talking about Jesus Christ as more of a white light or whatever), the third part sort of kicks off the story. Its real frantic like a birth or something... |

The "notches in spine" reference has sexual connotations, just in a more non-traditional, yet more personal, sort of way. The idea of "tracing fingers" through notches in spines is a lot more romantic than a vivid description of intercourse. |

I'm going to agree with Faye. There are all too many Communists, especially if you set the album in the late world war II era (the atmosphere seems to convey such), as soviet russia was playing a large role in the war efforts. |

This song, following the seeming introduction to the life of the "character" (for lack of a better term) that seems to dominate the album with the two parts of king of carrot flowers, seems to serve as a beginning for the actual story, and it reflects the optimism that accompanies most all beginnings. |
