I don't know if this makes much sense, but I've always thought this song was about making the most of your life, moving up. This man, Elias, never made it past section 17 or the sugarcane fields, but his sons will. Lives will not be interrupted when Elias dies. It's about living in obscurity and having an impact on the world. This makes sense if what TheNakedTruth says is true, about the song being based on one of the bandmembers experiences in Africa. I still don't understand the line "distance is short when your hand carries what your eye found," though. |

i reallllly like this song...i always thought it was about someone's father. the guy's a drunk, and kind of a waste of life, and as much as the son resents his dad's life and his lack of attention,

this song is so beautiful. i can't help but cry. i agree with the wrecka on what it's about. taking a leap, a chance...losing control purposely. the jump is always the hardest. and i think when it says "gravity fails me" it's saying that just because you leap doesn't mean you have to fall, or even land. |
