okay... the thing with Mineral is you listen and listen, and you love the song and everything. But one day, it just hits home. Totally out of the blue. Just one day, you're mowing the lawn or reading a book or whatever and listening to some song of theirs, and it just strikes you.. oh yeah, this is what was baing said! You get a completely clear, perfect vision of Chris' soul. July "happened" to me when I was driving. It's 3AM now, so that's why I'm just typing something so ramble-y, and I don't know if I'll even be able to express what I felt or understood in tha tmoment. Have you ever gotten so angry at someone, without the proper reasoning behind it? And then they bite back, and that's when you realize you've been horrible to this person .. whether it be for three seconds or five hours or a whole weekend. So they're telling you how they feel, and you realize they're right, you simply recognize it as the truth... You can't cry. You can't even move. I'm not sure if I'm right, anyone else got any ideas? |

Suppose it's about the monster Grendel? From Beowulf. The hero of the story kills this monster, but the fight is written from the monster's point of view. There's a situation right before the monster is killed, where the hero's party is outside the hall where he lives. They're talking and eating before challenging the monster. The monster is all alone.. "I wanted to be them" Grendel has to fight the hero, even though he knows he will lose. He has no choice but to instigate the fight... So he does, and he dies. "destroyed myself.." Let's assume it's not about Grendel: I love that line, and how it fits so ... cryptically. "The rain was there to wash away my tears / I wanted to be them, but instead I destroyed myself" Did the subject want to be the rain, or the tears? Who knows... Okay, so get this. Jeremy or Dan or someone has a fight with someone they care about. They have a bit of a bad side within them.. and the just let it come out because they felt they had no choice. This person they fought with was someone who could fix every single character flaw and every problem Dan or Jeremy or whoever has... the perfect love. Perfect friend or somethin. So they fight with this person about something, and it was the final fight, and the person leaves. Then DanJaeremyPersonOrWhatever says to themselves "jeez, I feel like a monster.. I feel like Grendel." I'm really not sure which one of these, but they're prolly all wrong. Just seems right to me. |

Ahhhhhhhh jesus. Hardly any song is as good as this one to me. This is sooooo powerful, I love it. Meanings? So confusing, especially with Sunny Day Real Estate, ESPECIALLY with Diary! I'd say, maybe a few things. #1: the Title. The Blankets Were The Stairs... perhaps a relationship where the bed is the only time they get along? the only place they can make progress? And I've been thinking about the rest. You can make a claim the song is about one lover killing another. "Late again, my breathing is leaving after yours" And other stuff. But I don't know if I'll ever know. |

I saw the Weakerthans almost two years ago at The Gilman (Berkeley, CA) with Plan 9. It was during some sort of punk rock phae I was goin through I guess, so when they played I didn't want to admit how deeply I was touched. I was just like, "uuuhhhh who's playing next!!" and so on. I was a pretty dumb kid. Anyway, this is what they opened with... and that first verse stuck with me since then. "My city is still breathing / (but barely, it's true) / Through buildings gone missing like teeth / The sidewalks are watching me think about you / all sparkled with broken glass" Anyway, there was this girl at the show, right? And I met her a few months ago, and now we're dating. Ummm so the thing is, she went through something of the same thing, minus the pretending to be hardcore. She just kept her mouth shut because of her PR friends. She went and bought the album (Left And Leaving) - I didn't. Two weeks ago she let me borrow it.... I love this. Aside from my story, this song is so damn rock and roll. It's perfect for the words, and the words are perfect for the music, and it fits so well. |

There are some songs, stories, movies, etc I would LOVE to write songs about. Books, usually... Like 1984 and Earth Abides and The Stars My Destination. These guys took one of my most favorite books, Breakfast Of Champions, and built this all around one of the main characters.... didn't get him perfectly, I don't think, because he was pretty complex. But they got this aspect of what happened to him down very well. |
