Rise Against – Hero of War Lyrics 14 years ago
When everyone starts getting on the same page about the reality of a situation, then maybe it's time to reconsider if you're the wrong party.

War is terrible as a result of the barbaric and inhuman things that humans volunteer for in the name of an idea, be it freedom, love of country, or a paycheck that's better advertised to susceptible malleable youths by way of TV commercials and talking heads than, say, working in a coal mine or at the local gas station. The brutality of war is something that will never go away, and to those who are disgusted with the actions of Guantanamo, please understand that we've done far worse to some of our own people across our short 200ish years and we aren't the only ones.

The idea that it's a given that soldiers should be held to a noble regard is antiquated advertising. We should be able to address the horrors of war in one context without it being a statement to troop nobility, as some do join the army to defend their country or keep the peace or whatever, but bands like Rise Against are establishing their firm anti-war positions, and songs like this go part and parcel with that position. But until the time when we decide we as a species no longer see war as "horrible but necessary at times", but instead value every individual human life as precious and worth uplifting, bands will continue to write songs like these and will continue to have bothered to talk to troops and get their ideas of what's going on over there from people who were actually over there.

A good example? Lamb of God's song "Ashes of the Wake" is made up entirely of soldier testimonial, and though it's only one soldier, that's one more than usually gets to speak their view directly.

Isis – Syndic Calls Lyrics 18 years ago
This song definitely ties into track 7 of this album, Grinning Mouths, in that the panopticon is constructed using the fear of death. Grinning Mouths elaborates on what the "cause of death" "will" be.

At least Fred thinks Manson and Zach are still relevant voices in the music industry.

Marilyn Manson – The Nobodies Lyrics 23 years ago
If any of you have seen the Guns, God and Government DVD, especially the "Death Parade" short film, you'll remember the concert where he held up a photo of a girl who was "beat up every day, and eventually couldn't take it anymore, so she killed herself"... I'm really not sure that this song, or any along the same lines lyrically, are about specific people, but more like those who are in the same situation, as well as giving recognition to those who do deserve it.

As has been said, the media took advantage of events like Columbine and September 11th, making them into ratings battles, into a business for sheer sake of profit, and thus making these events really more tragic than they needed to be. The fact that people could EVER use these events for their own ends is just sick, and that's what this song in particular feels like it's touching on more than anything else.

Deftones – Pink Maggit Lyrics 23 years ago
The limited edition, aka the Black Pony (being as the actual cd is black in color), has Pink Maggit lyrics in them. If you have the white-covered, white-disc edition with Back to School on it, it's because Back to School's lyrics are derivative of the ones here.

Mindless Self Indulgence – I Hate Jimmy Page Lyrics 23 years ago
I feel it should be mentioned that Jimmy Page in this song is the lead singer of MSI himself. His real last name is Page. The entire song, as well as the majority of the Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy album is making fun of and insulting himself.

When I first heard this song I thought the Led Zeppelin frontman as well, but that so doesn't fit in with the rest of the song.

After Lynn Strait died, Lajon of Sevendust and the remaining members of Snot decided to make a tribute album, entitled Strait Up. Every song on the album is the remaining members of Snot along with guest vocals, and the majority of the artists featured were on the Ozzfest Snot was on the bill of.

And yeah, it was via car crash.

Uh, no, these lyrics are correct. If not, all three of you can prove me otherwise, but I listened to the track reading these and they're dead on.

Tool – Parabola Lyrics 23 years ago
On the song side of things, cherishing life and all of that that's been said already basically sums that up. You can read the posts before mine and get a good conception of what I mean.

For the video side of things, I didn't get a damn thing until I read something referenced at Toolband.com, which speaks of Nibiru, this celestial body deal that's supposed to smack into Earth sometime in 2003. After I looked up a website on the matter, and got to linking around, I read ALOT of things that were referenced in the video. Such as...

The blue apple: Read the thing about Nibiru, kinda long to explain here.

The star in said blue apple: Watch as they zoom up to it... it goes from five-pointed, to six, then to seven. I believe this to reference sacred geometry and numerics... like, 666 is the number of man and imperfection, 777 is perfection, etc. etc.

Suited dudes puking: When the screen goes black, the hands grab each side of the circle and turn it inside-out... tada, seven-pointed star!

The two eye flames: More Nibiru referencing.

...I really don't know if any of this stuff is really referenced like I'm stating here, but I didn't understand anything in this video at all until I read all the stuff I've mentioned here; now the video kinda serves as a warning of the Nibiru deal, and the song helps to give optimism and relief to those that understand and will be kinda spooked out... "we are eternal, all this pain is an illusion."

Pitchshifter – Civilised Lyrics 23 years ago
If you look at the lyrics of soem of the other songs off of this album "www.pitchshifter.com", then come back and look at this, you'll see most of this song is out of sarcasm. I doubt the writer would ever agree that this society is civilised.

Tool – Sober Lyrics 23 years ago
I had my own idea about it, but after reading the drunken artist friend definition, I kinda agree with both, if possible. But now to give mine.

I feel that this is a multi-stage relationship between someone and how they feel about themselves and what's going on inside of them. It starting with how he has something haunting him, making him feel out of place about something going on inside, and after asking others (or more particularly, Jesus and Mary) he asks "Well why do I need to listen to you anymore? Why CAN'T we get drunk?", and after all the questioning he gets so lost in himself and everything that he can't believe anyone, including himself, so he wishes he could "just start things over". As for the whispering, it is him saying "Trust me", which is his old way of thinking trying to catch back up with him.

Tool – Eulogy Lyrics 23 years ago
This song is Maynard's way of finishing what Christianity keeps blabbing on about... "You guys keep repeating this, and you keep bringing him onto this cross... here's the fucking eulogy, I'll say it, then we can take him down later and hang up whoever you want to save you next." Spite towards man's need to be led, disbelief in Christ, and initiative to just finish it and shut everyone up, all rolled into one fabulous song.

Tool – Stinkfist Lyrics 23 years ago
Time for another interpretation!

I feel most of this song is about things such as fistfucking had to come around to help fill holes left by wanting more and more out of life, out of sex, ... out of anything, really, and how depreciated the subtle things are because of this ingrown need for more and more, better and better.

The song itself isn't about fistfucking, that's just used as the example.
