Hm. What does this song mean to me? Well, I know it's about Andrew's ex, Krystal and all that jazz. It's a great song. It's honestly the first song that ever made me cry. Music is my life, but never has a song reduced me to tears. Why does it make me cry? Yes, it is nine and a half minutes of Andrew "whining" (I believe that term was used to describe it by someone..) about his ex and lost love and whatnot. But in those nine and a half minutes he describes, in detail, what she meant to him. It's obvious they had a very strong connection. I don't cry because this song reminds me of some ex, nor do I think it'll remind me of some future. I cry because the music (piano and percussion mixed perfectly) is beautiful. I cry because I know I will never have a relationship even slightly comparable to this song. I'm sure Andrew could've summed up this song in a shorter time, however it would have lost the emotion behind it. I'm not sure how long he mourned the end of their relationship, but I'm betting he didn't go right out and find someone new the next day, or week. Writing is therapy (to me at least.. but maybe I'm alone there..) and this song was his therapy to aide in getting over Krystal. It probably took a while which I think is a correllation to the length of the song. It's a very specific song, but I think most people who do relate to it, relate more to the emotion behind the words rather than the actual words themselves. I also read something about "EBN" (emo by numbers). I've got to say I think my least favorite genre is emo. There are some great bands who get ruined by being classified as an emo band. Possibly the most ridiculous genre name ever. ALL music is emotional in some way, otherwise there's no point in writing the song to begin with. As for Something Corporate, or more specifically this song, being "EBN", that's ridiculous as well. Something Corporate is a *rock* band who uses a piano. If you're going to classify them into any genre other than rock, piano rock would be the way to go. Many bands will use piano/keyboard in one or a handful of songs, but Something Corporate uses the piano in just about every song. Would any of you classify Elton John or Billy Joel as emo? They write songs, played on piano, about emotional things such as relationships as well. I do agree that emo is a current trend, along with punk, and the fact that Something Corporate is on a more punk-oriented label and the guys listen to that music and are influenced by it to an extent lends them to be classified as that. So I think I've made this long enough, to me, Konstantine is a therapy song and the fact that Andrew isn't afraid to play this song when it obviously carries a lot of emotional baggage is pretty brave in my eyes. But then again, like I said before, maybe that's all just me.. Just one thing kids, try to classify music a little less.. I promise you'll enjoy it a little more :) |
