I would really like for someone to explain this song. This song has more lyrics than most TPR songs, which tend to have one or two lines repeated. Sometimes it just seems like Davey just writes whatever pops in his head, regardless of it making sense or not. "Where I have lost my voice and I smell like paste again where we'll be resting, when we rest." |

I think it is about a guy who has secretly liked a girl and never told her. He never found the way to express it to her, and now she has left, and so he has become a bit depressed and a recluse. I love the idea of him hiding a note in a book somewhere hoping that she will someday find it, and read it. It's cowardice that he couldn't just tell her, but its poetic the way she will find out. Now he has to sit and wonder if she will ever find the note. so he's just killing time on a puzzle that can't really be solved because its messed up, waiting until the day when she reads the note and calls him up. |

this is the one song on Control that disappointed me. The story is so compelling in Control, that I expected a better wrap up than this. I think that in Winners, the story is perfectly summated in the song "Winners Never Quit." But this seems lazy. The lyrics aren't interesting and it just doesn't carry the craftiness that usually accompanies Bazan's lyrics. |

I love this song.. it was always my favorite on Whole. I always wanted to shoot a video for this song, where a scared/timid looking David is driving his car singing the regular part while a scarey/aggressive David is sitting next to him screaming in his face during the parts that are screamed. The timid David blinks and tries not to look at the mean David. It's this whole duality concept I have in this song--it comes with all addictions. you have the hungry aggressive side that says more, more more, then you have the scared side who wants out. |

If you take Bazan's songs at face falue as Christian rock, then you are totally missing the point. Whatever you mean by "Christian rock" I'm certain that David Bazan is not it, and he would be very disappointed to think that people thought of him as such. he is a great songwriter and storyteller whose stories are shaped by his beliefs, but so are everyone's. he's not a role model, he's not a saint and he's certainly not an evangelist. I think everyone (Christians and non-Christians) should start looking at Pedro the Lion's music through other lenses besides religious ones. This song mentions Jesus, but it's not about jesus. It's about holier-than-thou type people who care only about their own well-being, and not even their own brother who desperately needs help. They are blinded by their religion which promises wealth and riches in the afterlife and they are blind to what God truly intended religion to be... love your brother. |

honestly, this song disturbs me. I really like it because it is so descriptive and fascinating. It's as if you're peering into the inner thoughts of Jeff Mangum and you almost feel guilty about what you find there. The line about "as we would lay and learn what each others bodies were for" delves into "exploration" among two young friends that I think is the most disturbing part of the song. |

Who could possibly decipher the stream of consciousness that flows from the mouth of Jeff Mangum? i have no idea what this song means, but it blows me away. it is such a powerful song in 2 movements. Jeff Mangum takes the ugly and makes it beautiful in an ugly way. there's a lot of talk of semen, death and reincarnation. but without a doubt, Neutral Milk Hotel is one of the most interesting and innovative bands I've ever heard. |

I think this song is about the wife who has realized that her husband has been cheating on her and she hasn't told him yet that she knows.. so they're still going through the motions of marriage (including sex). She's trying to tell herself that she can fake her way through the marriage, she can be second best to the girl that is stealing her husbands affection. |
