Lagwagon – Know It All Lyrics 23 years ago
What people dont seem to realize is the goal for nearly all bands is to "sell out." To sell out every show they play. Thats the point, no one becomes a professional musician to not make any money. The difference is whether the bands let the success and fame change them as people and musicians. In relationtion to the song: Joey writes "The bands are good til they make enough cash to eat food and get a pad." This is so true, I'm a professional musician and i barely make enough money to pay the rent. I would kill for a good record deal or a lot of fans. I make music for people to hear it, not so i can feel elite. People need to seperate music from the bullshit.

Bad Religion – Broken Lyrics 23 years ago
Lets kill music. If you are to ignorant to apreciate Bad Religion for their ideas and focus on whether they "sound punk" or the quality of their video how perhaps you should watch MTV? They have many quality multi million dollar videos their and empty meaningless songs. However if youd open your mind and your ears maybe you could acquire a greater apreciation for music and above all intelligence. Until then do not call yourself punk because you are a pop listener, whether you know it or not. Punk is about ideas and analyzing our world. Bad Religion is one of the most brilliant bands (the most brilliant in my opinion) to ever create music. But then again you are probably to simple minded to apreciate this.

Bad Religion – Faith Alone Lyrics 23 years ago
hennessee101, the ignorance and prejudice of your statements confounds me. You clearly state by your arguements that only religious people are capable of having and holding values. This is ridiculous. Millions of people in this world are not religious and at the same time are kind and loving human beings, a true addition to society. It is possible to be a good person simply because one believes it is the right thing to do and they have compassion for another man. And this country's "justice and freedom" was hipocrasy in the early years. It was only justice and freedom for rich white land owners who were always white and in the earlier years also had to be puritan. (your welcome to look this up) It has taken hundreds of years of progress through movements legistlation and changes in attitudes. As you state we are becomming less religious, but we have clearly made progress, far far from done, but progres none the less. Interesting. Also, please try to actually back up your statements with some kind of logical arguement. To say there is no good without god is blindness of reason at its best...I am not religious at all but i give to my community, I love my fiance and give her everything i can give. I will do my best to be a good father. I help my friends, my neighbors and care about otheres. Never once have i read the bible, been to church or studied christian values. Neither had the Native Americans who were brutally slaughtered by those who held the values of "Justice" of which you speak. Who was more christian? I know how to be good. Why? Because i know about kindness, and it was taught to me by the actions of my parents, my friends, and my expierence in life. Not from a church. Furthermore, how would an atheiest belief lead at all to the arrogance or superiority our government exudes in its manner, the hunger of the world and the majority of this countrys blindness to it(which is the actual basis of this song, the blindness to worlds problems and the refusal to act). Our refusal to help the world. God does not qualify the person, the actions of the man qualify the person as good or evil. Please do not insult your race by saying we have no idea what is good or evil without religion. Please think. I would aslo like congradulate Edo on his ability to actually give reason for his statements. Henessee you clearly need to learn to think of reasons instead of spouting rhetoric. Thank you if you read this far.

Bad Religion – American Jesus Lyrics 23 years ago
You asked for it, so here it goes(this is totally un edited, i apologize). The flawed status of the christian religion rooting from the puritan settlement of the US bred certain ideals which greatly influenced and ultimately corrupted the ideals of our country. The puritans came to this country seeking religious freedom, but when they settled they brutally enforced conformity to their ideals. "Your free to think like us." Also these settlers were intrinsically materialistic because of a belief that god wanted them to have things and by acquiring things you showed that god smiled upon you. (you can check the accuracy of these facts by searching for "puritans" on google or whereever youd like). As you can see this is a drastically different religious view point than would have been held by Jesus and because Jesus is the embodiement of the christian religion Greg as a talented writer uses him as a symbol. Only now he is corrupted by the American (not that only american christians believe this way or all of them do...). This ethic and ideals of the puritans have carried through over the years. As a result we are left with a nation that believes god smiles upon us because we have more things and also a belief that you will join us, think like us, and conform to us, or we will make sure you do. If not you will be eliminated. If one couples this basis of belief with the ignorance of many of the USA population (and oh is it rampant), than this is never questioned and therefore a sense of nationality and superiority is built on a religious ideal. Its Democratic....but unfortuneatly (to partially quote a NOFX song) a million people are not smarter than one. So there you have it, religion tied to the lyrics and the United States. I hope you found this to be interesting or at least informative. I am born and raised in the United States, I am an athiest, and I believe Greg to be one of the more brilliant humans i have come in contact with. Please understand that to really analyze some of his more complex songs would take pages upon pages, and this is not even close to a complete analysis. Thank you for your time. (ps dont bother making fun of me...i will ignore you, i dont need to waste time with it.)

deadbolt, please explain how in any way i tried to act superior? The fact that i was a songwriter was merely put forth so I could share the reasons why I write songs. Please try not to jump to conclusions and if you do, try to back them up with some sort of valid evidence. Im not superior, nor ever claimed to be.

I silenced not, please feel free to speak as much as you want, i am in no way claiming to be smarter than anyone, although i seem to be more open minded...whatever that may entail. The more is spoken, the more that can be learned. Please just think about what is said.

sure, you may turn it in. You can print it and burn if you want as well, doesnt matter to me. Thank you drak. The song can be about anything, like I said, God, possibly even weither he wants to save his head. As a simple apreciater of musical talent I can not know what the artist meant to convey, but only what was conveyed to me and what makes the most sense.

Blink-182 – Dammit Lyrics 23 years ago
Before you determine what is or is not punk, please consider what it means to be "punk." I can tell you what punk is, certainly not everything it is, and i cant tell you everything its not, but I know this; punk is questioning and exploring the world in which we live. Punk is not simply excepting what is told because it was told. Punk asks why. That is one thing you will find in every punk song that you will never find in many other genres. These questions do not necessarily make punk better (all though in my view it does hehe). Punk songs simply connect to those who question the world. If I were play a show in a sweater and ironed pants (which i have done before to prove a point), or log on to a corporate web site , or buy a album from a major label(god forbid...[please note sarcasm]) does that in any way make me less punk then someone who has pink spiked hair and wears leather? Image is simply a sheild for those who refuse or are too ignorant to go any deeper. I urge you to dig deeper. "And from the question why, spanned all the peace we hold in mind, the only freedom declaration, no i wont do just what you say, replaced by mass consumption, will loot and plunder what we may, and proclaimations of this our ignorant nation, false and illusioned pride, the question why begins to decayyyyyyy" --me

As a song writer i can tell you that songs such as this are not written for a specific topic. It is to convey emotion and through that emotion trigger connection. Connection is why people listen to music, especially quality music such as this. From identification comes growth. The song can mean a myriad of things, and to claim that you know what was intended is simply ignorance. I can tell you well punk is, certainly not everything it is, and i cant tell you everything its not, but I know this; punk is questioning and exploring the world in which we live. Thrice – Identity Crisis Lyrics 23 years ago
This song, to me is more complex than simply a man disillusioned. He is struggling with a choice. This is evident in the diction, especially in the first verse. The word juxtaposed means to place side by side especially for comparision and violitions are concious choices or decisions. The pondering of these decesions have left him disillusioned and lost, weak if you will. He "kindles flame" or starts as perhaps a call for help and when it arrives, in his desparate state he places or must place all his trust in this person, or being. He is asking, imploring this person to "refine hate and love" or to break them down to there simplest form and give him them both. From this we learn his weakest is not from self pity, but from his seperation with himself and his emotions. This may likely be from the two decesion mentioned before the chorus, which perhaps has torn him, or punctured him, if you will. This leads in perfectly to the next verse. He is asking this being (person or otherwise) to remove a posion darkness threw the means of a stab wound. The dagger wound is most likely a metaphor for bitter honestly, or simply asking to remove the images, concerns, and choices from his hands. The wounds will hurt him greatly, he will bleed, but with the blood, comes the evil. His wounds will heal, but had the burden on his soul and mind remained (the posion) he would surely have been consumed by it. In the last verse he states that "this is my voice all shadows stayed" this, to me, must mean that it is really him, the true him, not his evilness, not cowardness, only his newer pure and opened mind. This is further reenforced by his "heart laid upon the alter" meaning, he is willing to give up everything now, for he has nothing left and must rebuild. He continues, powerfully, pleading with this being, to indeed kill him, for he only lives for this person (or being). If one examines the title of this song and the aspects of the various verses, i have come to this conclusion. The author has broken up from a long and hard relationship, and from this stemed self hatred, a question of love, a question of whether life is worth living. He is begging this girl to take it all from him, for he no longer can live with it, and as a wave raises before crashing on the beach, concludes that life is over. He will die to bless her name. In his mind why shouldnt he? He is in an identity crisis, he has lost himself. This is simply an interpretation and the following is simply an opinion but this is : Truly a great and beautiful song, powerful and touching.

p.s. People, music is a flow of ideas, of sounds, and of emotions. It is, in my view, art as well. So until you have spoken with the creators of the piece you can never know truly what the meant by any aspect. So to denounce an entire genre of music reflects even greater ignorance. Please, drop your elitist attitudes and open your ears, you may see things inside your darkened disillusioned minds that will light the world slowly. Nothing everything is gained by listening, and one can never listen if one insists on bitterness toward the world.

Thank you,
Zach
