| Beastie Boys – Brass Monkey Lyrics | 4 years ago |

Mike D set the record straight in an interview in 2014. Heublien Brass Monkey was a cheap pre-mixed cocktail back in the day that the boys used to drink and is what inspired the song. "when I called Mike D to talk about his inspiration, he was confused: malt liquor? In a Brass Monkey? It turns out that the Brass Monkey he was singing about was a cocktail comprised of orange juice, vodka, and dark rum, which came premixed in a can. I used to be confused by the lyric "hands off my daughter" I thought that must be the girls father speaking. He's actually saying "dawta" which translates to daughter. In Jamaica though "dawta" is used to describe a girl, woman, “sister,” or in this case a girlfriend. |

| Devo – Big Mess Lyrics | 8 years ago |
|
From the Devo archives at Devo Obsesso... "The Cowboy Kim Letters Devo's song "Big Mess" on the Oh No, It's Devo LP was inspired in-part by letters that were written to an LA office that managed local game show hosts' fan mail. Devo had some friends who worked there, and the letters got passed onto them for the sake of strangeness. The writer of the letters referred to himself as "Cowboy Kim". I can only guess that Kim had some kind of mental handicap, and I have no idea if he was really a DJ or not. Anyway, you can see that some of the lyrics to "Big Mess" were heavily inspired by these letters. Go find a lyric sheet for Oh No, It's Devo and compare them to these ramblings by the real-life Cowboy Kim." http://www.devo-obsesso.com/html/ultrageek_pgs/cowboykimltrs.html |
