This probably won't add a lot to the discussion but if the "Paint It Black" mention is a reference to the Rolling Stones song then Chilton couldn't have written it when he was 13--at least not that line--because he was born in 1950 and that song came out in 1966. |

This song is great. I can't believe no one has commented on it before now. It's basically a re-telling of the Ingmar Bergman film of the same name. |

There is something profound about this song that is as of now completely eluding me. I can't decide if it's a terrible sadness, or... |

| The Smiths – Meat Is Murder Lyrics

Unfortunately, I think the majority of you carnivores who've posted thoughts on this song are missing the point. One of the main reasons for vegetarianism/veganism is that humans are conscious of inflicting pain. Now, you could say that it's human nature, or instinct, to eat meat. But, let's put it into a slightly different context. Ten men go into a strip club and watch the girls dance. Let's say half of these men become aroused. Obviously, chemicals in their brains are playing on their sexual desires, but does this mean that the men have the right to force a stripper into sexual intercourse? Of course not. An extreme example, perhaps, but it boils down to the fact that humans are capable of reasoning. To knowingly harm a creature in self-interest is loathsome and downright disgusting. For the kid who said that humans are going to be eaten at some point anyway, because that's nature...why don't we just go out and kill people? They're going to die anyway, right? It doesn't make a difference if it's now or later. And eating plants is wrong too, since they die, right? That argument doesn't align with pro-animal rights philosophy in that plants don't have the ability to feel pain or suffer. Though, I'll applaud the meateaters who attempted to say something intelligent, as opposed to the slew of ignorant postings. |

I'm not sure, but I think San Simeon is the town in which William Randolph Hearst built his biggest estate, and maybe this song is about his downfall? I'm not sure, but hell, why not? |

this is one of my favorite songs...though I'd have to admit that I was introduced to this song by Ted Leo's cover. |
