They fought alot. It was a relationship that went against the odds of making it, but they went ahead anyways - simply because, love has a way. Perhaps it wasn't supposed to happen, but it did not matter, she offered him something as great as love -- hope. Together they struggled, getting over the hardships of whatever put doubts in the head. I picture them as the underdogs in an election ("campaign"), running together off of their feelings for one another. If you've ever put your hope in someone you can relate to how he begs and pleads for her to stay. It seems sort of petty... but, if you care for someone sincerely, you will do what it takes to be heard. I think he watches the floor because seeing her leave might testify his beliefs: He's scared that she wants out. He seems dissapointed in her for giving up, he felt they were in this for the long run. Another reason he leaves his head down -- maybe he doesn't watch because he would follow? "A slowly crafted monologue" is how she let him down. A tasteless, beautiful-sounding good bye. The third stanza is perhaps his understanding after she's gone and he's looking up again. He can see that they are over ("denounced") and that she wasn't in it for them. He was "outbidded" for herself. They both don't win. He doesn't have her love and she won't take his. She'll want comforting, having people tell her, "it was for the best". She'll tell people how much fun they had and how great 'they' were as a couple. She brougth the "good fight" and forclosed it to an end. He is alone and some-what bitter over everything. He knows it wasn't a good fight at all. -tt |
