This is most likely about deceased heiress/debutant/Warhol Superstar Edie Sedgwick. The lines "You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat/ Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat/ Ain't it hard when you discover that/ He really wasn't where it's at/ After he took from you everything he could steal." refer to Andy Warhol rather pointedly.
I've heard that the Dylan songs Leopard-Skin Pillbox Hat and Just Like a Woman were also Edie-inspired, but I doubt it.

Hmmm. An unplanned pregnancy--Siren, I like the way you think. Your scenario fits, too. Still, my money's on the abortion. |

Basically the world is amok with folks who have issues with intimacy--the so-called "freaks who suspect they could never love anyone". And one day you wake up and realize that you're sick to death of looking for that one person who's not an emotional basket case. The narrator wants her new relationship to work out, but she's unsure, because her man would have to practically have superpowers to help her forget all shit she's been through.
I particularly love the last verse-- because, of course, the universe is also brimming with folks who are so fucked up that the only people they can love are people who don't love, period.
This song is practically a masterpiece of modern alienation! Go, Aimee, go! |

This and No Feeling are two of the best songs to listen to when you've broken up with somebody and you're in that pissed-off stage. |

A council tenancy is like a council flat, which in Britspeak basically refers to subsidized housing. What we in America refer to as "the PJs".

Clearly in the stanza "Don't you love the life you killed/ The priest is on the phone/ Your father hit the wall/ Your ma disowned you", the girl had an ABORTION ("the life you killed"), and her parents and parish priest are on her case about it. Generally, the song is about growing up, naivity, falling in love, and the overwhelming powerlessness you feel in those years between being a child and becoming an adult. Terrific song, great lyrics, achingly real. |
