| Alanis Morissette – Ironic Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
Alanis stated in an interview that Glen (her producer) and her were just trying to make each other laugh by the absurd lyrics. Think about it. The irony of the song is that it is not ironic. And Alanis knows this because she asks towards the end of the song "and isn't it ironic, don't you think? A little too ironic and yeah I really do think." Anyone with half a brain knows she is making a real joke out of all of us here and we need to laugh with her. |

| Alanis Morissette – Uninvited Lyrics | 23 years ago |

This song was probably written about the media. It was written after her intense rise to fame, and was not altered to fit the soundtrack. "You speak of my love like you have experienced love like mine before." Tabloids. "Must be strangely exciting to watch the stoic squirm." TV interviews. "An unfortunate slight." Alanis wanted to make good music, but all the media attention came as an unfortunate slight. "Like anyone would be I am flattered by your fascination with me." She's flattered by the media's fascination, but wants them to leave her alone. |

| Eminem – Without Me Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
Who does Eminem think he is? I mean, he might be popular among the MTV audience, but beyond that, no one really cares who, where or what he is. Controversy? Give me a break. He'd be ecstatic to make the cover of Rolling Stone. Ask most guys on the street who actually HAVE a college degree of some kind (unlike most of his fans, who either aren't old enough or are too busy getting high in some trailer park) and they probably have never heard of Eminem or most of his songs. A pop culture icon? No. Someone we'll remember in 50 years? No. Someone most people are familiar with now? No. Eminem is famous, but he has no where near the fame almost everyone else in Hollywood or the music business has. And his riches are in the lower seven-figures, pathetic, even when compared to the salaries of the cast of "ER". My point? "Without Me" celebrates a lasting influence on pop culture or the music world Eminem has yet to give us. He's not particularly rich either. And only a little over 20% of Americans (educated Americans, mostly, which really hurt his statistics) are familiar with Eminem, familiar as in being able to name two or three songs. He does come out with a few good songs, I agree. But "Without Me" makes it seem there is something missing in the music world, or hell even shit like MTV, without him. He is sadly mistaken. No one but his fans really care if he's making records or not, and I bet if he's killed tonight he wouldn't get A QUARTER of the news coverage George Harrison got. "It feels so different without me." Sorry, but no one noticed. |
