Dashboard Confessional – This Old Wound Lyrics 22 years ago
I'm 99% sure this is what the song is about:

This song is about Chris running out of material to write songs about (well atleast as far as Dashboard Confessional goes.)

Chris was in a very good band and started writing songs as an outlet. It was kind of therapy for him. Then people asked him to record a few songs and it became very popular (thus the birth of Dashboard Confessional.) He actually gets very nervous about singing these songs in front of people because they are very sacred to him and very personal.

He wrote songs that were very personal to him and gave them to us. We related to them and it was therapy for all of us to sing along with him.

In order to get what I'm saying you may have to understand what Places You Have Come to Fear the Most is about. (Look up my interpretation of Places You Have Come to Fear the Most if you want... I think I nailed every word in it) The thing that he feared the most went from the things he wrote his songs about, to people rejecting his songs.

So he released the CD Places and it was a huge success for him. Not only as a musician, but probably acted as therapy for all his pain.

And now he has nothing to write about... or atleast nothing that can be similar to what Dashboard Confessional is about.

Its kind of funny how at the top of this thread people talk about how his new songs are different... thats exactly what this song addresses! (You new Dashboard fans are so niave!)

Lets look at some of these lines:

"I’ve been bleeding well
From this old wound
Cleaning it with salt,
So it will still feel new"

I read in an interview somewhere that some of the songs Chris wrote in Places didn't really happen to him. He created them, well lately he hasn't been feeling enough pain to write songs we can relate too. He still gets some pain out of his "old wound" but he can't get the same kind of things out.

"And everyone watched me waste myself
And everyone cheered at last
And all of them found it comforting
Its better it’s me then them."

You ever been to a Dashboard show? Ever seen him crying on stage and then people scream and clap for him? How would that make you feel? Think of going up in front of 5000 kids and tell them about all your worse pains and then having people take that lightly. Its got to be brutal for him, but he finds gratification in knowing that we find comfort in him.

He knows he's helping us, and he wants to continue to write songs that help people out, thats what this enitre song is all about.

There are a few lines in this song that I don't understand like the belt and shoelaces... did he used to dress up different? Maybe they made him wear dress shoes when he went to an awards show and his belt wasn't good enough??? Beats me... I don't know.. and I'm afaid I don't understand what he's getting at with the entire "A scar, a mark, a track... or whatever he says"

(I talk like I know what I'm saying... its just my opinion, you can agree or disagree if you want)

I agree 100%. That line is so powerful... I think every guy has felt it and it just eats you up inside. That line is the climax of not only the song, but the entire CD.

I used to think "Knew it All Along" was the best song on this CD (I can say the same thign about No Place and Such a Person... its an amazing CD :))then I read the lyrics as I listened to "Come on" and realized how powerful it is.

This song just means a lot to me right now and I can't write enough praise for it. STW, LTG is in my favorite CD ever and like I said earlier, this song is the perfect climax for it. Its just so awesome. (Its progressed a long way too! Have you heard the orginal version?)

FYI- Steve writes most of the songs and I'm pretty sure he wrote this one too.

I didn't really understand this song until "allykat838" explained it. Now I see it as a song about long distance relationships. I never understood the line "My words just like a mentioned kiss..." but now that I think about writing letter and what not... it all makes sense!

Well... I don't know why I am posting this, but once I wrote a poem that included lines for this song and other good songs.

I just thought its cool that Midtown has a song that says "regrets are worthless" and NFG has a song that says "love is another word for regret" I don't really remember the way the poem went, but here's the general idea.

(my situation was that I liked this girl but I was gonna be moving in a month, so basically I wasn't sure if it would be good to start a relationship...)

"Regrets are worthless
And I don't know what this relationship will cost
But I cannot afford loves debt to distance
Love is another word for regret"

Hmmm... thats not it. The poem was better than that, but I do remember playing off of those two lines and including the concept of "Distance means nothing to me" from It'll Never Snow in Florida.

Shoot, I should have kept a copy of that poem.

Ya, Steve writes the lyrics.

As for Jordan's voice... it changes every CD. I think its best in NGCS, but have you ever listened to Its All About the Girls? It took me a long time to get used to his voice, but it really does have more emotion in it.

XxEmoPunkGrlxX- I like those lines too! I wish NFG would listen to them!

To NFG:

Please don't change
Please don't change
Please don't change!

Well actually its already to late! They changed, so please change back!

What are you talking about? There is only one version of this song and it is on NGCS.

Why did you post it again? Believe it or not you still got the lyrics wrong!

Its

"My name ISN'T disappointment"

Why do you people have such a hard time with this? Does it really make sense to say "my name is a disappointment, I only disappoint myself?"

If your name is a disappointment, how can you only disappoint yourself? It just doesnt' add up. How do all these people say they love this song so much and not even know the words or what it means???

I think its cool that he's going in a new direction. Everyone is complaining that he's "selling" out to the MTV population. Well its obvious that he isn't. His new songs are all about the music, not about being popular (remember the line from Wayne's World??)

If you listen to songs like this and the version of Hands Down its clear that he's all about being a musician, not about selling records. For all you people who don't like it... screw you! Go find the next popular band to like... I've heard Avril Lavigne is going on concert soon!

oops! I just read through the lyrics again and I guess I missed this line...

"When I forgot to call
you knew it all
it was coming down on you

will you still be waiting?
That's something i can't ask you to be"

So obviously the guy isn't as innocent as I made him out to be in the above analysis. I guess I just wanted to blame it all on girls... guess you can tell how I feel about them right now :)

Midtown – Just Rock'N'Roll Lyrics 23 years ago
This song is so much more than just a song you can scream along to. The line "God I wish I could hate you for the rest of my life" is just so cool. It suggests an incredible amount of anger while also allowing for forgiveness. I totally agree with toxyfoxy said, but I will add more to it and say that Gabe realizes he will get over the anger and things will eventually get patched up. He is just so upset right now that he doesn't want to admit that.

I think the song is about a first love. A relationship that the male participant was a rookie in and probably fell head over heals in love with the girl. The girl wasn't as loyal. The probably fought a lot, but the guy was in love with her so he stuck with her.

I'm thinking the relationship fell apart when he left (probably when he went on tour.) He excuses his own actions by saying "its just rock n roll" or in other words "its the rock n roll lifestyle, I'm allowed to see other girls" but is probably bitter that the girl is getting more play than him. He might have some regret for leaving the girl behind and losing the relationship (thus the chorus line "casue you were right then I should have been..."

You know what? I change my mind. I'm thinking he had an opportunity to end the relationship and wishes he would have. He might feel bad about living the rock n roll lifestyle, but he enjoys it and isn't gonna change and is gonna leave the girl behind.

Thats just my opinion. I think this is probably the same girl he writes about in the song "come on"

Midtown – Come On Lyrics 23 years ago
This song is lyrically probably my favorite by Midtown (well actually I can't say that. How about the entire Save the World, Lose the Girl album is my favorite??)

To me its another song about a long distance realtionship. The words they use are just incredible. Amongst my favorite lines are...

"Will you still be waiting? That's something i can't ask you to be"

"I'm waiting for and when you leave it all and you finally fall i'll be coming down with you i'm waiting for you something is wrong but i just can't put my finger on it"

"Come on you could have any other boy to take my place and hold when you're feeling all alone"

Basically the guy who wrote this song is in love with a girl but he can't be with here. He is extremely understanding of the fact that long distant relationships are tough but he's committed to her, but unfortunately for him the girl isn't as committed and it basically breaks his heart ("how can you say that i'm supposed to stay when you talk on to me that way oh come on now i cant see what i'm supposed to be but if you trust me it might turn out ok" and "it hurts when you talk that way")

Its such a great song. The way all 3 sing it at the end is probably my favorite moment in the history of rock n roll. There's just so much emotion and talent. I wish I could see them perform it live...

Its the perfect example of how guys get screwed by girls. This guy is dedicated despite realizing that the girl isn't thinking about him. He ends it saying "I know you've haven't been there for me, but soon I will be back and I'll be there for you and it will all be good because I have stayed true"

BCRGlory6679- I've been listening to NFG for about 2 years now and it is obvious to me that their lyrics are getting worse.

The songs still get caught in your head though! I was a little upset with the new CD when I wrote that last post. I still don't like a lot of the songs on Sticks and Stones, but I'm starting to listen to it more.

P.S. I still think the sidelines thing is lame.

Dashboard Confessional – This Bitter Pill Lyrics 23 years ago
Personally I think this is about a drug such as Prozac or some other drug taken to escape the depression.

I have had friends who get depressed and it really sucks. They start to turn to drugs rather then facing the world. That is what I think Chris means by "Walking away, its not the same as running. It it? Do you know that you've run this in the ground?"

From personal experience I have had friends who run the same excuse into the ground. Every weakness they have is excused by their emotional problems. The take the easy way out and don't challenge themselves. It breaks my heart. There are still things they are capable of but they let this sickness take over there life. Its like a complete surrender.

I can understand why its such an emotional song for him. I've cried for many friends who use the Bitter Pill to run away from their problems

This song is just terrible. I like the concept of "forget my name" but the rest of the lyrics just flat out suck.

"Tell all my friends I'm dead"

Honestly, does that make any sense to anyone? They are trying to hard to come up with something poetic, but its not working for them.

Then they move onto this metaphor...

"cuz i've been gone for a long time
waiting on the sidelines
hoping for a chance to play"

The sideline thing? Thats just pathetic, its been way over done. Anytime someone resorts to that you can tell they are running out of ideas.

i'm thinking the suicide thing makes sense. If you think about it, he is a very emotional guy and he might have serious emotional problems.

He pours out his heart into his songs and now his deepest emotions have been exposed (read the interpretations of Places that you've come to fear the most) It seems like it has had a really positive effect for him, but it could also be very damaging...

Dashboard Confessional – The Places You Have Come To Fear The Most Lyrics 23 years ago
I think this song is an insight to how Chris really feels and it might show some insecurities in his own life.

I think he is talking about himself in this song. He started Dashboard Confessional for other people (us) not for himself. It has kind of become a show where he pleases people and he might be getting tired of it (kind of a bold statement... don't know if I really believe it.) But look at the lyric

"Well this is one time you can't fake it hard enough to please, everyone, or anyone at all."

Chris actually likes harder music. He likes rocking out. He only recorded his own acustic songs to please friends and it took off. It became extrememly popular so he ran with it (maybe to be nice to his fans and in the meantime to step into the spotlight.)

I think he originally turned to his acoustic songs as a therapy. He writes about feelings and emotions to express himself. I heard someone say that "he opens his mouth and his heart comes out." He obviously is very emotionally attatched to his songs. However, people have also become attatched to his music and he might feel it as a responsibility to keep giving them new songs to relate too (not his responsibility, I see it as a service)

It says in the song that he is "faking it." I think now it has come to a point where he is doing it for us, and he feels guilty that they aren't as close to him as they used to be. It might be a concern of his that one of these times he is gonna say something and we are gonna react in a negative way. And that has become his greatest fear.

"And the grave that you refuse to leave the refuge that you've built to flee. The places that you've come to fear the most, is the place that you have come to fear the most."

The refuge that he built was the guitar. I think he found great solace in writing songs, but now his refuge has become public and he fears people will eventually reject it.

Thats just my opinion, but I think I'm pretty dang close. Tell me what you think...

I found this in an interview. I will comment on what I think the song is about later...

"There are no specific references to anyone in particular in my songs," he says, "but there are references to me. I do turn the eye inward a lot. I'm saying, 'I'm lacking in things, as are you, as is everybody.' There's a lyric that goes, 'And the grave that you refuse to leave the refuge that you built to flee. The places that you've come to fear the most, is the place that you have come to fear the most.'" What, one hazards to guess, are those places? "When I wrote that song [the album's title track], I said to myself, 'You've got a chance to say what you feel, so let yourself fear.' I wrote that when the record was already done, and it really just nailed how I was feeling. I asked myself, 'Why don't I feel better now?' I had done this album, I had purged all these feelings, supposedly, and I thought, 'I don't feel better. Why not?' So, I cranked out that song in the morning before I went to the studio. And it felt good enough that it became the name of the album."

Dashboard Confessional – Ender Will Save Us All Lyrics 23 years ago
Here's what he says the song is about. I read it in an interview...

"Okay, here's how that came about. First of all, my middle name is Ender, so when I saw the book I was like "Wait a minute!" And I got way into that book and I shared it with a friend, and then that song was actually a Vacant Andy's song just called "Ender," and it was written out of the fact that the friend and I kinda shared that book together and got a lot out of it, and we read the whole series of four together. Then we sorta had a falling out as friends, and talking about the book again brought us back to being friends again. So I had written the song when we weren't getting along so well. And I wanted to be able to get along with that person again, and I didn't have a title, but then after we started getting along again we started talking about the book again and I was like "let's just call this Ender." But it was a Vacant Andy's song and it was a rock song and it was a HEAVY song. And so when I re-recorded it, I just called it "Ender Will Save Us All." It had a way of saving our friendship"

Ya... I'm still not fully understanding the song. He says "Tell Tale Heart again..." what the heck?

Lets look at what he says before that.

"don't tell me
what it's like to love someone.
a different song for a different girl.
and to think i might be wrong."

"tell tale heart again"

This is what I'm thinking. In the first part he is talking about finding the right girl. Maybe he is playing girls and coming up with clever ways of getting rid of them. He thinks he is doing a perfect job of disposing the relationships, but when it is all done he hates himself for it.

Thats kinda like the story... not really though.

Saves the Day – Cars And Calories Lyrics 23 years ago
Everyone is pretty much saying the same thing, and I agree. Its about anorexia for sure but its not just about the effects on the girl in the song. At the end he sings "And it takes bites out of YOUR insides"

Its kinda funny how I started thinking about this song. I was out camping and I hadn't listened to the CD for about a week and all of a sudden the song came to my mind. I'd never really payed attention to the lyrics until then (and I was singing it in my head.) I never really understood "and it takes bites out of your insides" and didn't see how cool it really is. It describes it perfectly. Anorexia isn't just a physical disease, but people who have it suffer socially and mentally.

If you have had a friend who has anorexia you can understand this song. All my friends who have had this disease have at some point discussed suicide with me. That just kills me. It hurts so bad. People who are beautiful and you love them think that they are ugly and worthless. I hate it.

Our world sucks. Every where we turn Hollywood is glamorous and happy. Britney Spears is gorgeus but she's a slut. I try not to be attracted to her, but she is appealing. I feel that if I talk about how beautiful she is, what will the girls I hang out with think? Will they think they have to have the perfect body and sex appeal for me to be interested in them? Brittney Spears is just an example of the trouble Hollywood causes.

There is so much fake beauty in our world that it is destroying everything. Even if you haven't been caught up in the Hollywood facade, it does effect you or people you love.

Great song, one of my new favorites.

I don't understand why this song is so good! The lyrics are so plain, but really powerful.

Like he completely loses it when he says "She always wears blue" Its such a simple statement and kinda lame, but he makes it good. This guy is incredible.

shel-b, I think both are right. Look at it this way

Song 1- About him wanting the girl to notice him
Song 2- The girl notices him and asks him out
Song 3- He prepares for the date, he's nervous for the date not only because he likes her but because he's thinking about a relationship
Song 4- The date is a success.

Man he is good. He put so many thoughts that guys have into 4 songs.

Awesone song, but I don't understand the title. I've read 'Tell Tale Heart' and I really don't see how it applies. Anyone have an opinion?

Does it just sound cool, or does it actually have a meaning?

The only way I can see it working is that maybe he broke a girls heart and feels bad for doing it. He tries to be friends with her but it really doesn't work out. Their conversations are dry and there is always a constant reminder of their relationship in his mind. Despite the relationship being dead, its still beating and living in his mind.

Wow, it makes sense to me now. Kinda cool how that worked out... as I typed it started to clear up for me!

This song is in reply to an ex-girlfriend (I believe Steve's) Basically most of the songs in NGCS are written to her this song is telling her that he has moved on and isn't writing about her anymore. Thus the line "i bet you thought this song was about you"

I'm not sure... but I'm thinking "Tell Me about your first kiss" might be a pick-up line that he used. However it could also be used bitterly against the girl if Steve was her first kiss

This song is amazing. I didn't understand it until Altoid's comment, but know that I know that I like the song more and more every time I hear it (also the Summer's Kiss version is incredible!)

I love this line

"We need a connection but you seem to push me far away from you. "

I am a huge Ender's Game fan. After what Altoid posted we can assume that the book Ender's Game is that connection. In the book Ender saves the world and then later on goes on to save another world... in this song Ender saves a friendship.

Its just such an awesome song.

Does anyone know how he got the middle name Ender? I'm thinking he was born before the book (or even the first articles) were published. However I read on the internet once that they thought Card invented the name...

I read in an interview once that J.b. stands for "just busted"

Jordan had a party at his house when his parents were out of town. When his parents came back they found a condom in the bathroom and a beer bottle by a plant and he got in trouble.

All in all New Found Glory's songs don't make much sense as a whole. They just kinda skip around and leave a lot of thoughts open... thats why I like them so much.
