Uh...personally I think the last line is "exceed the flesh" but I could be wrong. Well, if anyone has ever been on Bourbon street, they'd know that it is lined with strip joints(wall to wall...very disturbing). So maybe (like onafriday said) its about someone who wanted stardom and excitement but (as metaphorically suggested) only got as far as a strip club or prostitution. Then, they find out that God is phony (as suggested by the whole Mother Teresa part). So after that, they try to figure out what happens next: will they find happiness or truth? All the while, they regret their lives so far. Then they have a whole transcendent moment where they decide to follow fate and shed their old lives...almost like a rebirth. And that rebirth is emphasized by the wave-sounds in the background that drown out the "I've been downhearted" part. |

I can appreciate any song thats not about love or teen angst (both being very old and tired topics). In general, I think its a song for all the people out there who just prefer to keep to themselves for whatever reason. And besides that, its just sounds so great. It has this driving, lonely rhythm that perfectly conveys the meaning of the song's lyrics. |

What I really like about the song is just the general feeling that you get from the combination of the background music and the singer's voice. I don't even pay attention to the words anymore, I just let the feeling wash over me. I played the melody on the harmonica for my friends once, and they still got the meaning of the song: all the hurt and betrayal and foolish loyalty and hope. The meaning is obvious, but the artists managed to utilize the entire song (instruments + voice + words) to convey that meaning. |

Without looking at what other people said, I thought it was about someone getting fed up with someone else. He's basically saying that either the person will treat him like he's a hindrance or he will believe in himself and find his own independence. And then he suggests that if the world weren't so shallow, things would be different. I like it because it doesn't have to refer to a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship or even a relationship between friends. Its just about him realizing that he's better than the shit he's taking. (And on the plus side, the Eels is really good! I got the Beautiful Freak album and its I recommend it highly) |
