I think this song is about a failed love affair...she's moved to LA to forget this guy, and had to leave her home and her best friend, but she's still in love with him deep down. She's done all the usual things you do - writing a letter and not sending it; imagining the guy of your dreams tracking you down - what would you say to him? And now she's in LA she's going overboard thinking about back home. |

"Maria came from Nashville with a suitcase in her hand
she said she'd like to meet a boy who looks like Elvis..."
That's such a great line!
Source4, I'd never looked at it that way before. Interesting... |

| Counting Crows – Raining In Baltimore Lyrics

This is the first CC song I ever heard - I always thought it was about the guy who'd left his girl and moved somewhere remote, but she doesn't seem to care - "Three thousand five hundred miles away But what would you change if you could?". It feels like he regrets getting mad and leaving - "I miss you, I guess that I should."
I don't know if it's physical or metaphorical, but I know it's a great song! |

| Counting Crows – Goodnight Elisabeth Lyrics

I always thought this song was about a lover who'd died - Elisabeth - and he's missing her being around. He says he will wait for her, but she won't ever come, and he'll miss her when he's with another woman, because it's not her. I also get the feeling there's some "private jokes" going on here - "wrap yourself in daffodils" and the "Queen of Cailfornia" seem to suggest something that they had when she was alive, that only they found funny.
As for the "other Elisabeth" you mentioned, I thought that too - but the only link I could find was in "Rain King", where he talks about the "Queen" - this could link to Queen Elizabeth, or to Elisabeth, the "Queen of California", or both in some way. He also says "I am the King of the Rain" in this song, which links to the aforementioned "Rain King". Maybe Elisabeth was a lover of Adam Duritz's who died? Who knows! |

I think this is a fantastic rock n' roll song - I first heard it a week after Sept. 11th, when the video was played in tribute. It was filmed 4 days before the attacks, and the WTC is in the background. But as for the lyrics, I think they're great - I love the line about "a picture that would fit in the folds of my wallet", but I couldn't say why.. |

It may be simple, but aren't all the White Stripes' songs? Not that that's a bad thing - I can't stand over-wordy songs. I actually really like this little ditty... |

I love how simple these lyrics are - they're so accessible, and they make me feel safe, if you see what I mean! Some songs go so overboard with the lyrics they lose their meaning, but this song is beautifully void of complication. And I like the idea of the guy not liking the girls who run around crying to everyone, just because that's a pet hate of mine! ;)
The White Stripes seem to have a "thing" about marriage, don't they? What with Hotel Yorba's "Let's get married in a big cathedral by a priest", which is interesting for a rock & roll band...most songs these days seem to be all sex and romance, which, quite frankly turns me off.
Did I say I love this song? :P |

I love this song - it's so great to just jump around to! On the lesbian theme, I wouldn't know, but there's a Blur somg called "Girls and Boys" which has the lyrics "girls who do boys like they're girls who do girls like they're boys"! Make what you will... |
