I don't quite get that either. This might be picking too deeply, but at that part there is a key change. Constantly, constantly in the song they refer to the flag, how meaningless it is, and at the end, there is an appreciation for its beauty, and perhaps the ideals that the woman could get out of it, could change.

I disagree somewhat. I believe that the person is genuinely depressed about his life. He talks about how useless it is in the last verse, where the only purpose of his life is to destroy. And if nothing else, it is simply a yearning for someone to catch him, to give him purpose. For example, "if I fall" vs. "when I fall."
Either way, it is a masterpiece of a song itself, and literally their best one. It is a perfect "I'm depressed" song. |

I have a dear friend, someone I love and cherish very much. Someone I always had wanted to have a relationship with, for many years, and when I hear this song I immediately think of her. Beautiful song, and the melody is fantastic. |
