Sure, dog eat dog represents that fact that humans are greedy and feed off of eachothers suffering. The song is basically about how people hurt others and gain from it without ever thinking twice.

I know you will laugh at me when i say this, but to me this song is a story. Its a story of an ultimate death of purity. It seems evident to me that the term "swallow whole" is used as "cover completly". "What follows" is the unity of impurity, and because "What follows will swallow whole", the impurity will cover the earth in one simontanious action. In the first stanza, Davey sings "I'll lay me down tonight, much further down" Which to me, means the he will become lowly, impure. "The whitest lace of light" represents the last purity in the world. And as it "begs to be imbrued" it is becoming impure like everything else to form "Pure impurity" Another thing I find, is that he is not truely "swimming" in the sence of moving in liquid, but becoming one with the impurity. When davey says "What follows (inpure purity) has lead me to this place where i belong with all erased" meaning he has been placed in a state ease because he is but another impurity, and all difference has been erased. One final thing I note is that "The calm" is probably a lack of difference. I'm probably way off, but that what i think >.<
