Laura Marling – What He Wrote Lyrics 5 years ago
I'm not sure I understand various things in the lyrics. One is this:
"And where is the lamb that gave you your name?" The Lamb is usually Jesus Christ. The line before ("How did he learn, To hold fruit in his hands?") also sounds like a religious reference to the apple and Adam (the original sin, so he, the distant lover, might have had an affair with another woman? is that why we find HER ("Her skin is white" - whose skin?). Which name the lamb gave him remains beyond my imagination - can you help?

Mr. Probz – Waves Lyrics 6 years ago
There is a verse in this lyric that makes me doubt there might be a mistake.
Everywhere on the web I do find "I can see the sands on the horizon everytime you're not around", but I think it would make much more sense if it were "I can't see the sands on the horizon when you're not around". Why? he says he's in deep water (face above water + can't touch the ground): you may enjoy this, but it doesn't seem to be the case - he says he's drifting away and it seems like he's drowning as he's pulling against the stream. So what can he do? try to reach the shore on the horizon. But if she's not around what will the feeling be? positive or negative? if she were around it would be easier for him to find the strength to reach the shore, the right direction to the sands, but she's not around, she's gone, so safety (the sands of the shore) seems to have disappeared and he can't see them, that's why I think "I CAN'T see the sands on the horizon when you're not around" sounds more logical to me. I think it often happens you can't tell if one says, for example, "I can do it" or "I can't do it"

Sia – She Wolf (Falling To Pieces) Lyrics 8 years ago
I don't think it's that easy to interpret this song without having a look at Sia's others lyrics. What I believe are two themes occurring throughout her lyrics are: 1. she seems to have a double personality (she-wolf is she + wolf) and 2. she permanently feels under attack (chase, hunt, kill are words from this song) and she must absolutely resist. If we consider Chandelier: 1. the double personality of the party girl who leads a crazy night life full of alchohol and sex, but then in the morning feels the shame; 2. she swings from the chandelier but she won't look down or open her eyes (scared), holds on for dear life as she feels in danger, she wants to resist, not to fall down. In Elastic heart the double personality is well shown by 1. the little girl first fighting in a cage with a man, but then she tries to lead him out of there and make peace. She fights for peace. She's at war but she wants peace at the same time; 2. she's got a thick skin + elastic heart and she thinks she can resist attacks, but the blade may be too sharp even for her. Or again in Titanium she's under attack (you criticize) but all your bullets ricochet 'cause I'm made of titanium (=I've got a thick skin). As a conclusion, I see a woman with a double personality who feels weak when personality A (the one with yellow eyes) overcomes personality B (I can't compete with the she-wolf that's in me); B tries to defend herself in all ways but knows that that may not be enough to save herself from the she-wolfs that lives inside herself. B even asks for information about A in She-wolf - what do you see in those yellow eyes? Quite complicated: a psychiatrist might help Sia, I think. Sounds like she might have really been under attack (abused?) when she was a child (little girs and little boys are the protagonists of the other videos I quoted). Hope all that will stimulate your interpretations

Neil Young – A Man Needs A Maid Lyrics 8 years ago
There are times when you, by any reason, feel you can't get the ideal love you are longing for and then bitterly give it up: the ideal is impossible to reach, this awareness makes you suffer, so in order not suffer you will downgrade the relation man-woman (source of pain) to just something practical and useful for daily routines, depriving it from any shade of sentiment that might remind you of love and make you suffer again. Please read the modified lyrics below, imagine the singer is a woman and then say if it can't be referred to women as well (and so to all human beings - so please women libbers don't fell dissed!!!).

My life is changing in so many ways
I don't know who to trust anymore
There's a shadow running thru my days
Like a beggar going from door to door.

I was thinking that I may get a handyman
Find a place nearby for him to stay.
Just someone to keep my garden clean,
do odd-jobs and go away.

A handyman, a woman needs a handyman.
A handyman.

It's hard to make that change
When life and love turns strange.
And old.

To give a love, you gotta live a love.
To live a love, you gotta be "part of"
When will I see you again?

A while ago somewhere I don't know when
I was watching a movie with a friend.
I fell in love with the actor
He was playing a part that I could understand.

A handyman, a woman needs a handyman.
A handyman.

Lilly Wood & The Prick – Prayer in C Lyrics 9 years ago
And when men will be no more, you... this you can't be a man or a woman, clear enough, could be only God. It's a song full of rage, disappointment and despise, nearly blasphemous, against a God who no longer watches over or speaks to humanity (oh yeah He did it in the past through the Bible, but a Father will not leave His children starving and dying, self-content of what He had already forecast and telling to Himself "See, I was right!" - this Father does not deserve any forgiveness, in that I agree with the lyrics). Man's faults are huge, right, water will cover the lands because of his blind rush to success, power and consumerism, so first of all shame on Man, but God has done nothing to stop that slaughter and deserves no forgiveness. Maybe this accusation may be seen as a desperate way to ask for His help and intervention. Strange effect the coupling of such tough lyrics with plain simple music.

Yes, very few comments compared to the beuty of (especially) the music. More generally speaking, I feel it also says something like"don't judge people or their behaviour if you don't know what happend from the very beginning", if you don't know the whole story from its start. He's ot kind of complaining, just a little regretting the other person he's now talking to hadn't been with him from the beginning. Also an apology, but now it all seems pretty clear, pity for the absence at the beginning.

Regrets and mistakes THEIR memories made =
Regrets and mistakes have made their memories, they have put themselves together as memories.

The rest is simple: who would have ever imagined it that all this affair would be sweet at first (the time we enjoyed it) but bitter later on (now I'm suffering alone).

Adele – Someone Like You Lyrics 12 years ago
That's the only and same question about this song I keep on asking myself, but I have no answer. And is it "their memories made" or "they're memories made"? Anyway, "nothing can compare to the feeling I'm in, no worries or cares can compare to that". We should stop here, as in the next sentence "regrets" is connected to "mistakes" by "and" and not by "or" - so that must be a new sentence: "regrets and mistakes are the stuff memories are made on" (like Shakespeare's "Such stuff as dreams are made on" - The Tempest) but I'm afraid a grammarian wouldn't approve. What do you think?

Lou Reed – Perfect Day Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with DavidB. Even a drug addicted may see how nice it may be to spend a normal day doing normal things like feeding animals in a zoo etc with a nice normal person, as if he weren't, for one day, a drug addicted. It was a perfect and unforgettable day just because it was a different day from all the other ones - why should one of the so many days he took drugs be the perfect day to be remembered long afterwards? the bittersweet, in my opinion, comes from his awareness that keeping on living a normal life with this person would be impossible for him, as he knows he's NOT someone good, he's not someone a girl should/could spend her life with, as he's already got another "girl" (heroin). He regrets that and feels this is anyway what you deserve (you reap what you sow); he sadly accepts his condition by which he can no longer enjoy the simple things of life, a simple joy that now he misses after he's become a drug addicted. This is what you lose (reap) when you start (sow) your addiction. So this is (though not only) a song about drug addiction.

Bob Seger – Shame on the Moon Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm at a loss when I try to find a meaning for all the three parts of this song. The first sounds addressed to women whereas the second to men. The first says "woman, if you don't stay beside your man you won't understand his feelings or who he really is, so a woman's task is be beside your man. The second part seems addressed to men: when a woman loves you, man (once inside a woman's heart), you man must be faithful to her (a man must keepo his head) even though temptations are all around you ("heaven opens up the door where angels fear to tread" sounds to me something like a sinful temptation - why should angels fear to tread in heaven if this heaven were holy and pure?). Once tempted by sex with other women some men go crazy and ruin their life and their woman's (some men go crazy), some others are careful (go slow), some others don't care at all (go just where they want) and finally some give it up at all (never go). Then the chorus seems to find the guilt of all these temptations and mess coming from them in midnight and the moon, symbols of languid love - men are lustful because not because they want to be like that but becuase of external involuntary influence (sex pulsions) symbolized by the moon and the night. Third part, harder for me to understand, and I leave it to you and ask for your help: everywhere it's all around: IT may refer to all that has been said so far - some people find comfort in a laughing crowd as they can't find it in their partner (either because he's unfaithful or because she doesn't stay beside his man). Then it says " don't quickly judge other people by starting from your old prejudice ("step light on old toes") because if you haven't been beside, near a man, you know nothing about the person he knows (you don't know who he knows) - help! I don't understand this!

Everyone is unique, it's true, but nevertheless everyone can improve the way they are. This song is against prejudice, it screams against those who wish to "bring us down", but in my own private way I wish to be a better person than I am. If everyone thought they are at their best just because they are like that, there would be no improvement in anybody. I think this song says more "keep on going down your road and don't listen to those who despise you" rather than "never change yourself and stay whatever you are" - that would be too "consoling"

I wish we all knew what we are really talking about: have you tried reading the various transcriptions of this lyric here and there surfing the net? you won't find even one exactly the same as another one - words are difficult to understand, especially where she sings "we're the song inside the tune" which for this site is "yeah we're all inside the truth", or "tomorrow we might wake on the other side" which for others is "tomorrow I'll find the way all the other times", "Tell your friends you're delirious" instead of "To all your friends you're delirious", "so consumed in all you do" or "so consumed in all your doom" . Luckily the overall meaning is clear enough, but what sort of language is English, that you (I'm Italian) don't understand your own native tongue!? Please find out what Christina actually says before interpeting wrong words! By the way, the lyric and the music were not written by Christina but by Linda Perry, who is Pink, Gwen Stefani and Christina's producer.

Fra Lippo Lippi – Shouldn't Have To Be Like That Lyrics 17 years ago
The XVIII century main theme in literature was "Love and Money", in the XIX it was "Love and Death", and here's a typical sweet and bitter XX century lyric theme: "Love and loneliness" mixed to a yet to come XXI century theme: "Love and communication". Words and feelings buried inside people who can't find the way to speak them out. The video consistently shows individuals who come out of and return to a cold stone wall, and there disappear without exchanging a single word after walking in a park surrounded by the stone faces of statues mirroring the people who can't communicate their feelings. It shouldn't have to be like that, it's true, but IT IS like that.

Depeche Mode – Little 15 Lyrics 17 years ago
There are 3 people involved in this lyric: the narrator, you (little 15) and HER. The narrator has no special role. You (little 15) is seen as a contrast to HER as regards being happy, unconscious, smiling, not part of an evil world, of its intrigues. We have no real clue whether this little 15 is a boy or a girl. For sure the third party, HER, is a woman, older than 15, who has had experience in life, knows the evil of the world etc, and now she needs to see the world through the little 15's eyes, smile again as only an unspoiled soul of a 15 year old person can still do. The video shows time mercilessly going by (alarm clock hands turned fast - piece of paper with a "14" years of age thrown into the bin and soon they become "15", and in their turn they are thrown into the sewers). It seems adults' awareness of the evil in the world could be healed, relieved for a while through a contact with the simplicity and naivety of a teenager, which in his/her turn will understand, once he/she's seen, as time goes by.

line 03 moving > I'm moving
line 04 won't you near me? > want you near me

line 08 I think of the theme > I think of her name
line 09 its > it's
... and ...
This is gonna take a long time
the touch of your hand
Behind a closed door

How many mistakes! some of them make it impossible to understand the lyric, especially the omission of her (name). She was in love with a boy and had an affair, then he started loving another girl (her name), and now she can't understand how she can't take what's hers (the boy), when she sees him she would like to be together again, but the door has been closed (on his part at least)

Manic Street Preachers – The Girl Who Wanted To Be God Lyrics 18 years ago
I've asked myself who this girl could be, that wanted to be god. A girl who was at the same time true (to a man) and faithless (to God), a girl who first told the truth and after the event (about which I will say nothing now) she lied. A girl who thinks about a possible different future (a godlike future) and who denies the words which have been said she doesn't believe, because she believes that blind people can see (blind = ignorant; see = get to know), a girl who has been blamed for what she's done, but who believes she can be seen as blameless in love. And finally, a girl who has seen that, at the dawn of the new day, heaven is so high (= far away, impossible to get to), and only love remains, love to death. So far I've tried to say only what the song says, and here is my interpretation: Eve wanted to be God by eating the apple (I am the girl who wanted to be God), we assume she was true to Adam and always has been, but not to God, as she didn't believe God's warning about the apple's effects (You could see that she was true and faithless), she discarded God's words because she wanted to "see" by eating the apple and change her (and Adam's) own future see through the future and forget all the lies
Black out the words for the blind have eyes). She was forever blamed after eating the apple but she finds she and Adam (we) can be blameless to each other (Just for once for no-one else we are blameless), but they will have to live far away out of the garden of Eden (The dawn is still breaking it's heaven is so high, she never told lies before eating the apple, but then, when God asked them about the apple they denied the truth (She told the truth, told the truth and then she lied). What is left now? the love she can share with Adam and death (Hold me she said love me to death). Should I be right, this is a very peculiar, human portrait of our rebel and day-dreaming mother Eve, the girl who wanted to be God.

Manic Street Preachers – Small Black Flowers That Grow In The Sky Lyrics 18 years ago
Right question, Pumpkinhed: what can this title mean? what has it got to do with the rest? I agree with the zoo animals interpretation (which can be extended as a metaphor of modern human condition) - but what about the title? here is my interpretation, which will surely seem overcomplicated, but please try it: the condition of zoo animals (and human beings) is the exact opposite of what it should be, so why should the title be plain and straightforward and not reflect this "opposite condition": how? If the lyric's message had been: "man and animals are free and happily lead their colourful lives on the Earth", the title would have been something like: "big colourful flowers grow in the garden". But as the message is the exactly the opposite, the flowers are black and they grow in the sky.
Moreover:
1. I asked my friends: what animals are there at the zoo? most says elephants, giraffes. These animals are big animals: BIG, opposite SMALL
2. what kinds of life grow on our planet? animals and vegetables. Zoo animals are animals: opposite vegetables; flowers are vegetables: FLOWERS
3.flowers are colourful. Opposite of colourful? : BLACK
and please note that black flowers do not exist
4.animals (and flowers) live on the ground: opposite IN THE SKY
5. zoo animals (and human beings), according to the lyric, slowly die and even mothers are seen as dying and crawling ("Harvest your ovaries dead mothers crawl"), reduced in their capability of giving life. Reduce: opposite GROW.
Everything has been reversed and made negative, sa has the title: BIG UNHAPPY ANIMALS DIE ON THE EARTH > SMALL BLACK FLOWERS GROW IN THE SKY. I hope all this can help

Manic Street Preachers – Everything Must Go Lyrics 18 years ago
Each of us is what he/she is (at least) partly because of recent history. What would each individual be if he/she could be FREED FROM THE MEMORY/CENTURY/HISTORY? we'll never know, but the impression is that history heavily weighs upon everybody's conscience and HURTS from whatever point of view you come to look at it (I'm just thinking of the Nazis, Stalin, the Holocaust, Cambodjan Red Khmers, Vietnam war, Hiroshima. pollution, starving children and fat western ladies...) The future is just an anticipation of what history has been, so why should we trust in the future? should we somehow get rid of the past, we would inevitably fall down again into the memory as soon as we look for any EXPLANATION about anything. Sooner or later you'll need an explanation about anything, but explanations need history, so once again, like in a nightmare, we are calling back history. Everything must go, you can't help it. We have been made of history, but history is mostly horrible and noone can escape that.
A very realistic and pessimistic lyric with a theme not for everybody to understand or appreciate.

U2 – With or Without You Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about a car wanting gasoline, or maybe about a mosquito love affair... oh please! how can you be so sure your interpretation is THE interpretation? should the lyric be "he came, he saw and then he left", one would say it's about Jesus Christ because he came from heaven, saw the evil that was among men, then he died and left our world. One other would say it happened to him when he was 16 to come to a place, see something and then leave (I do believe he did!), or, finally, that's a song about Julius Caesar (who used to say Veni Vidi Vici = I came, I saw I won). As long as the way you read something is basically consistent with what the text actually says, your reading may be acceptable. That doesn't mean the others are wrong. The guy who sees Jesus Christ in every corner of this song would see Him in any shape of a kaleidoscope, I'm sure. But please let the others see in it 2 lovers, a car or a mosquito love affair

I don't think it's so important to know who originally wrote the song or where the building is. There are places where you might get ruined even though they look like nice places with fancy names or icons (e.g. the rising sun or whatever). As we should keep to the lyric, we find no reference to a whore house, but to gambling and being drunk, that's all, and that's what we have to keep in mind to understand why he's going to jail. Just a last thing: the message - oh mothers tell your children not to do what I have done, and ... what Houses of the Rising Sun are there nowadays that the mother's children should not go to?

Strange that there are so few comments on such an old and famous song! and I even now don't understand it. I agree with Johnno7 and more with frijolito - he's an outsider etc., but what puzzles me is: we use to say that we talk to the wind when people don't listen to us or they just don't want to - we don't usually speak to the wind - literally or metaphorically - on purpose. Does he speak to anyone who won't listen to him? could be, but he doesn't seem concerned with other people. Or does he talk to the wind because he likes that? and why should he like talking to the wind? what for? I have no idea. Just to be yourself and express yourself in wonderful isolation, with a partner (the wind) who won't bother you? when he tried to talk to a real partner, that partner tried to instrucy, conduct, possess him and use up his time - all that will never happen if you talk to the silent wind (he cannot hear so he won't reply or disturb you). What do you think?

Depeche Mode – Behind the Wheel Lyrics 19 years ago
I think he doesn't actually refer to sex or to women. It's rather his attitude to life which from time to time makes him feel helplees and unwilling to do anything - it's his lack of will which we can also find in other songs like "Never let me down again", in which his friend drives (flies) an airplane and in which he likes being driven to places - he has no need to take steps or decisions - he rather lets other people do that for him. No responsibility, no need to be the one who decides (and makes mistakes maybe).

Madonna – Live To Tell Lyrics 20 years ago
If Madonna's songs are so shallow and commercial, as some professors claim, why don't they explain such easy lyrics to us? I believe aj is correct, it's about a secret and no hints have been given as to what it is about, so every effort to identify it, as Ange does, would be quite arbitrary. I must say that when an interpretation is consistent and matches every detail of the song, well, that is a brilliant interpretation anyway, and Ange has found the best (up to now) I have heard of. But it doesn't account for the positive part of the lyric, I mean the reference to beauty and the light and warm it gives inside a person (another secret). And somehow the content of that mysterious secret seems to be stated in that "A man can tell a thousand lies", that seems what she wants to tell (warning) everyone. She seems she has seen the best side in a man (beauty, love, warm, light) for a while, but after that the man has been unfaithful and, as most men, has told a lie and everything has changed ever after. What is left is the positive touch of love and at the same time the regret for what has been negative.
