drunkenmonkie i agree with you...Opposite of December was the best PTW cd ever released....Not Within Arms Length, To Mandate Heaven...and of course, the unrefutable Slice Paper Wrists and Nerdy....the lyrics are effing incredible...never had i ever read anything like it. all i was trying to say was that Tear From The Red had some great songs on it as well, which most people tend to overlook that, labeling TFTR as a "crap" album, which it is most definitely not. But yes, Opposite of December was most definitely the best one. |

guys, i've said this in just about every post that i've posted under songs off of the new cd, so i'll be brief: (1) the band did NOT sell out, suck, go down the tubes, or any other variation. they changed their sound(for THIS cd anyways). bands do that. there's only so much you can do with one sound before you have to move on (2) the band is evolving both musically (by listening to the record) and emotionally (by reading the lyrics), and for this i think that it's kickass...you fuckin rock Poison the Well. and (3) for all you skeptics, step outside of your narrow anti-metal anti-anything different minds and read the lyrics..they haven't changed a bit ;) |

i think it's about being depressed, and when you get really depressed you get so down that you drag everyone else around you down...basically about just not being able to deal with feelings of depression and hopelessness |

this is an incredible song...i love the sound that they gave it...the slow build up into an explosion of angst...beautiful! anyways, i think this song is about being on the road, being in a band, being famous, etc. ("you grow accustomed to seeing the sun in a different location"), and how it takes a lot out of you and really wears you down ("barely able to keep the lids open"), also the record companies and the "corporate" music world...they try and sink their teeth in and try to ruin a band..that can really get to some people ("they find ways to drag you along and dismantle what you've created") at some point, every band gets so fed up with things that they want to throw in the towell and just call it quits("the easy solution to this, and everything else is to move on"), but ultimately they realize that they are doing what they love and it's all worth it in the end ("at times i might think that i need the rest but who would want to go back there?", "bad memories and good times keep me from believing that i can still jump off") |

guys guys guys some of you are missing the point i fear....let's observe shall we? take (1) band: poison the well, the best goddamn hardcore, emo, screamo, whatever-the-fuck-you-wanna-call-em band around. take (1) writer/lyrical style: jeff moreira, who writes lyrics that can (and have on many occasions!) make a grown man(me) cry. take (1) musical sound...faster drum beats, higher-pitched melodic scream, quick riffs...you get Opposite of December. ok. 3 ingredients, 1 album. for Tear From the Red, ptw realized that it was time to try a different sound...after all, there's only so many chord patterns with every different sound...2 of the ingredients (the most important 2 in my opinion) are still the same! If i recall people bitched and moaned at Tear From the Red because it was "too different" and they had "sold out" by switching to what seemed to be a heavier sound. but some of their best work was on that cd...botchla, parks and what you meant to me (fucking great song)...now, for the 3rd installment of the ptw saga, they have again switched sounds, both to expand musically and simply to keep themselves and the fans from getting bored! if they hadn't changed their sound at all people would be complaining that ptw is getting old! is there no pleasing you people? i guess the bottom line is the new sound is only that...a new SOUND. even if the older sound was better, that doesn't mean that ptw's new stuff is "crap"...who are we to say that music is crap solely because the band that makes it is trying out new sounds? i guess what i'm trying to say is this: READ THE LYRICS...FEEL THE EMOTION....IT'S STILL THE SAME POISON THE WELL! |

it's hard to tell what this song is about...i've found that to be a recurring theme with the songs off of You Come Before You..the lyrics are more abstract than "Opposite" or "Tear From the Red"...in any case the lyrics to this song are GOOD....i think that the song might be about how as a kid he tried to establish a relationship with his dad, but he never could because his dad would only yell at him, even though he so desperately tried to build a relationship with him ("In every corner and space i search for you, i've only found your vocal cords"). now looking back as an adult, he still thinks about it and wishes he could have had a better child life ("hate that i'm never certain of what needs what most, and nothing has affected me so..."), and he feels like he never really had a father growing up("i know we've never met...") so basically this song is similar to Loved Ones, except where that song is angry, this one is more desperate, kind of like he is using this song as a last resort to tell his father how much he hurt him, even though he knows it's futile. ("i know we've never met, and you'll probably never read this")...that's what i could gather from it... |

this song confused me when i first heard it...i have an idea (albeit a longshot of an idea) as to what it's about...i think it could be about a kid who is incredibly misunderstood and seen as the rest of the world as "disturbed"...and either he did something really bad or wants to...kinda like the whole columbine thing...and the parents understand that they need to deal with it but they're afraid of him, because he is seen to be disturbed or psychotic or something...but on a broader scale the song could be just about kids in general, and how today they are seen as freaks and disturbed by their parents when they just want to be left alone, and their parents yell at them for "being bad" even though they are afraid of their own children, and the kids are confused and hurt by their parents being afraid of them when in their mind there's no reason for that...i think this is the message ptw was trying to get across but maybe just by using an extreme example? |

i wouldn't even say that the new album is heavier so much as it is faster and more aggressive...if you slow any of the songs down to a much slower tempo it would sound a lot more like botchla or lazzaro or anything else off of tear from the red...also, the new cd is so much more aggressive. with the older stuff, i felt a sense of despair and desperation after listening to it, whereas with You Come Before You that feeling has been replaced more with anger(this is due to the different subject matter as well as the different riffs and Jeff's deeper scream). and no they are NOT turning into slipknot. |

this is a great song...i especially like the title. it seems that it is about getting down on yourself, feeling so hopeless and worn down and not being able to go on...and it is possibly due to being on the road so often?(i believe letters keep me warm; i believe letters keep my company)...i think that maybe this song is saying that he is starting to feel the pressures of his fame |

i agree with you slicemypaperwrists...the new cd appears to be more about his family and his personal life than any relationship related problems. this song is a perfect example...from what i can gather, it's about (like what lessontohighest said,) his family, and how obviously he was not doted on as a child...it seems that his family did not treat him very well as a child, and now that he's famous they are all over him(and i know you never cared until now), but he sees right through it...this song is basically a big "fuck you" to his family for trying to be fake and attempting to make ammends with him after he's accomplished something (there is no way to make up for these 20 years). i think it's interesting that most of the songs on You Come Before You seem to be about this and similar topics (family, etc) where as the other PTW cd's up to this point were about relationships and heartache. i think it's a very interesting step for the band to take and i salute them for their creativity. |

I think the male and the female vocals, they lyrics they sing, how they're laid out...everything...it serves to tell a story. Firstly, the male vocals are talking about how he was obviously hurt by this person and he no longer wants anything to do with her anymore. Then, Melanie comes in and sings about how she desperately wants someone but he doesn't love her...could she possibly represent the person that the lead singer is singing about in the first half of the song? He was hurt by her, and wants to sever all ties, while she still loves him but knows that it's over...just a thought. |

yes i feel i must agree with bandagediris...poison the well is an incredible band...Jeff Moreira is such a gifted writer he can bring me to tears...if you read the lyrics to the songs on "You Come Before You" you'll see that they're the same poison the well...I personally dont care what it sounds like so much as what it means. anyways, if the band wants to try new sounds out i say go for it! albeit i do like the older stuff better, by no means is the new stuff "bad"...a pefect example is this song...totally rocks me hardcore...each of ptw's albums is like an era...each era has some seriously kickass songs that are "still beautiful" (hehe parks and what you mean to me quote) and for this reason poison the well remain some of the most incredible musicians to date. |
