The White Stripes – Hypnotize Lyrics 22 years ago
I adore this song. . . and the meaning behind it. Jack's basically saying he likes this girl, and he wants to "hypnotize" her into feeling the same.

The White Stripes – In the Cold, Cold Night Lyrics 22 years ago
This song is obviously about her love for an older (possibly) man who other people don't exactly like ("I don't care what other people say. . . I'm gonna love you anyway").

I like her voice. . . it's not the greatest, but it's very cool and smooth.

Post Statement: I agree with DoomBunneh.. this song is based on someone who was VERY in love with someone, and shared their entire life with that person- now that it's over, they aren't sure what to do anymore.

*bows down to John, the casanova*

I remember seeing the video for this song for the first time. . . how John is serenading his girl acoustic. . . when I watched that for the first time, I thought,"Wow. . . my dream guy would do that for me." Here I am a few months later, and my boyfriend did that for me.

John Mayer – 3x5 Lyrics 22 years ago
This reminds me of all my troubles. . . how I can leave to some interesting, faraway place, and return to the same old life I left behind. . . I've seen new places and had new experiences, and the people back home are still the same as before. This song is about living your life and getting out there, and when you get home people are asking about it. . . instead of telling them about it, you want them to experience it for themselves.

The Cure – Close to Me Lyrics 22 years ago
This song reminds me of a guy losing his virginity- he excited and happy because he wants sex and is curious, but at the same time he's worried and frightened that he won't perform well and do good.

I burned a cd with the Cure's version of this song along with the Get Up Kid's version and gave it to the guy I lost my virginity to BEFORE we had sex, and I think it made him less self-conscious.

The Cure – Boys Don't Cry Lyrics 22 years ago
I love this song. . . it displays one of the Cure's greatest abilities- hiding a heartbreaking song behind a catchy chorus and melody. He's saying that he'll do anything to make up for what he's done to his girl, but he knows that there's nothing he can do to make things better. He's trying to be tough by saying "boys don't cry" but at the same time his heart is breaking.

The Cure – A Thousand Hours Lyrics 22 years ago
To me, this song is based on a heartbreak. The character is self-defeating and is searching for a way out of his self-imposed misery. Perhaps it could be based on a wayward relationship or even an addiction. He endures thousands of hours of pain just to feel his heart for a second-- he's gotten himself into something he knows isn't good for him, but he keeps coming back for more.

The Cure – A Letter to Elise Lyrics 22 years ago
This is the song I constantly listen to while thinking about my ex-boyfriend's best friend, Shane.

(((My ex was a self-defeating bastard, who made me want to end my life. Shane was like an angel compared to my ex. . . .

Shane and I eventually developed feeling for one another, but he was such a loyal friend that he could never get past the fact I had been with his best friend. There were complications involved that we couldn't control, and no matter how much we tried we couldn't make it work. ))))

This song is basically a resignation of one of the subjects in love. Although it's extremely difficult to come-to-terms with, he realizes that he must end the relationship. He loves her, and she loves him, but he knows that love just isn't enough. He wants to be with her more than anything, but for her sake and his, he's making the conscious decision to leave. Perhaps his feelings run deeper for her than hers do for him. He's obviously broken promises, and realized that she's not perfect, like he once believed her to be. They once lived together in a world of make-believe, and now he's come crashing down to earth with the realization that it can never work the way he wants it to. He's tried many times to fix the problems, but he realizes it's useless. . . there's nothing else he can do than say goodbye.

Nine Inch Nails – Underneath It All Lyrics 22 years ago
This song holds personal meaning with me, and I can relate to it's meaning. I'll explain it through my own experiences and the context I see it in. . .

The narrator was once in love with the subject. The subject meant everything to the narrator, and the narrator was eventually wronged beyond belief. He tries to move on, but he never can because 'underneath it all' the subject still remains. He's willing to do anything to shake the scent of heartbreak, but he never can. He just wants to be able to let go, but it's impossible for him. He tries, and tries, and only defeats himself more and more. Perhaps the only ending for this torment he's experiencing is suicide.

submissions
Nine Inch Nails – The Big Come Down Lyrics 22 years ago
He's attempting to sever painful ties and overcome how he's wronged, and in the end he reailzes that his biggest bully is himself. His main problem is his self-imposed prison that "keeps on coming from the inside".

Nine Inch Nails – Starfuckers, Inc. Lyrics 22 years ago
This song WAS written about both Marilyn Manson, and the way Trent feels alienated by his fame. As we all know, without Trent Reznor, Marilyn Manson would be nothing more than "Brian Warner and his drum machine". The fact that there was a falling out with Manson was exposed during Trent's 1999 interview with MTV's Kurt Loder. Somehow, Trent and Manson had made up for the videoshoot (it sure seemed that way-- Manson was sitting on Trent's lap while he was dressed as a woman.), and now seem to be on bad-terms yet again. It makes sense why Trent wouldn't exactly love Manson- Manson is self-defeating towards both himself and his career. He became the leader of the Satanic Church after meeting with Anthony LeVaye, then left the church, after selling his 3 million records. Anti-christ? I think not. Watch the VH1 Driven Episode featuring Marilyn Manson. . . it exposes that he's a normal guy, who just happens to like selling records. I definately agree with the comment made about Manson putting on an act to make money, because that's exactly what he's doing. Trent is a true musician who values artisitc integrity, and this song is a beautiful display of just that.

Nine Inch Nails – Please Lyrics 22 years ago
Trent is living in a self-imposed world of pain, and he's willing to invite another subject inside to witness what it's REALLY like. After failed attempts at partnering this subject, he realizes they can never live up to his expectations and he'll forever be alone with his pain.

submissions
Nine Inch Nails – Where Is Everybody? Lyrics 22 years ago
Trent feels abandoned and betrayed by "everyone" (obviously his friends or family, or the people who promised to be there and weren't). In other words, there's many people who are along for the ride of fame and fortune and such, but when Trent needs a shoulder to cry on or something to hold him, no one is there.

"I'm so tired of pretending of wishing I was ending"
---he's tired of pretending he's suicidal and depressed when all he really wants is someone to be there for him. . . and not have to 'live up' to other's expectations. He wants to be himself.

submissions
Nine Inch Nails – Into the Void Lyrics 22 years ago
Metaphorically speaking, I think "the station" would be suicide or death in general, and the "final destination" would be hell, or the afterlife.

The character in the song is torn between ending it all and holding on.

Nine Inch Nails – The Way Out Is Through Lyrics 22 years ago
The ocean is often used as a metaphorical point of a female suicide. In "Just Like Heaven" by the Cure, Robert Smith talks about the obvious suicide of the girl he loved, and he uses the metaphore "drowned her deep inside of me". The fragile is much like that in this sense. The woman he loved died, and he's determined to keep on going long after her death, because he knows that's what she would have wanted.

submissions
Nine Inch Nails – The Great Below Lyrics 22 years ago
To me, it's very contemplative- he's not exactly pondering death. He's reflecting on what he's been through and what he's done. . . he's hopeful. He thought he had found his soulmate, but he's still looking because he's not sure.

Nine Inch Nails – La Mer Lyrics 22 years ago
Of course you can hear part of "The Void" at the end....it's much better if you listen to the entire album, and not skip to a certain track. Each song runs into the next- it's like one big song.

Nine Inch Nails – No, You Don't Lyrics 22 years ago
To me, this song is Trent tormenting another, poking fun at them though their own insecurities and issues, in a sarcastic way.

"taking all you need
(but not this time)
no, you don't"
--- Trent is basically saying that the subject has gotten their way before, but he's strong and he'll stand in their way. He's telling them that's he's not a pushover like the others, and they'll have to really try if they think they can beat him.

"and just for the record
just so you know
I did not believe
that you could sink so low"
---- Trent is basically telling the subject that he's disgusted by them, and disapointed. He knew they were low, but he didn't know they were THAT low

Nine Inch Nails – Even Deeper Lyrics 22 years ago
"I woke up today
to find myself in the other place
with a trail of my footprints
from where I ran away
it seems everything I've heard
just might be true
and you know me
(well you think you do)
sometimes, I have everything-
yet I wish I felt something"

-- Trent left his life of stardom and only when he was on the outside looking in could he realize how jaded and damaged it had made him. People who don't even know him form opinions about him, and he's started to believe in those opinions, no matter how far off they are. He has anything he could ever possibly want- money, fame, girls, etc... but what he really wants (love and compassion) he can never find, because people fall in love with his big rockstar image, and not the 'real' trent.

submissions
Nine Inch Nails – The Fragile Lyrics 22 years ago
Trent admires the subject and wants to help her along, although he's sure she can do it alone. He won't let her fall apart because he loves her, and he knows she's worthwhile. . . although it's something she can't see herself.

"If I could fix I'd. . . but it's too late for me"-- Trent is basically saying that he, himself is a lost cause, so it's productive for him to put forth all of his efforts towards helping her. He's saying she's more important than him, and he's determined to help her.

"We'll find a perfect place to go where we can run and hide. . . I'll build a wall and we can keep them on the other side"
--- He's saying that she shouldn't worry about other people's opinions, they don't truly know or understand her, and she wouldn't want to get to know people like that anyhow. He's telling her that she's safe with him, although she's afraid and vulnerable.

submissions
Nine Inch Nails – The Wretched Lyrics 22 years ago
The narrator (Trent) is speaking down to a person lower and less experienced in his life, a person who is going through the same traumas he once went through in his own life. The subject is attempting to make a better life for himself, but his mistakes are pulling him back to where he started, again and again. No matter how hard he tries, he can never be free of the past and he can never overcome the wrongs that have been made.

The narrator is mocking the subject in a "I told you so" kinda way.

Nine Inch Nails – The Day the World Went Away Lyrics 22 years ago
"I'd listen to the words he'd say, but in his voice I heard decay"
---- the person he's referring to acts like he's okay, but even the tone in his voice contradicts him. He's pretending to be okay, but it's obvious he's living a lie.

"the plastic face forced to portray, all the insides left cold and gray. . ."
----The subject he's referring to is forced to portray something he's not, while he's falling apart on the inside.

"there is a place that still remains,it eats the fear it eats the pain. . . "
--- 'The place' refers to a center of self-abuse, whether that he a drug, alcohol or self-mutilation.

"the sweetest price he'll have to pay, the day the whole world went away. . . "
--The subject eventually paid the price for fooling everyone, he himself couldn't take it anymore and destroyed the empire of lies he had created.

Nine Inch Nails – Somewhat Damaged Lyrics 22 years ago
This song is based on Trent trusting someone. . . he had a perfect relationship (friendship, perhaps) with them, and there were promises made to never end it. . . and it ended anyways. He feels ruined ("broken bruised forgotten sore: poisoned to my rotten core") afterwards and seeks an outlet (the song) for his feelings of betrayl.

"how could i
ever think
it's funny how
everything that swore it wouldn't change
is different now

just like you
would always say
we'll make it through
then my head
fell apart
and where were you?"

--That part makes me just wanna get up and scream along with Trent. It's SO incredibly emotional and meaningful. It makes me wanna curl up and cry, but punch someone in the face at the same time.

Nine Inch Nails – Reptile Lyrics 22 years ago
I think this song is based on on a girl the character falls in love with. It's a continuation of "Piggy" and "Closer". He loves the girl, although she's dingy and hurts him. . . he knows he shouldn't, but he keeps coming back for more.

"oh my beautiful liar, oh my precious whore"
- He's deeply in love with her, and amazed by her sluttiness. He's a self-abusing person, and he adores her for the way she hurts him.

submissions
Nine Inch Nails – Eraser Lyrics 22 years ago
I've seen the video of it played live. . . I also enjoy the portion of "Closure" when Trent is traveling and the background music is the remixed version of this song.

This song is beautiful, because it sums up every element of a relationship- whether that relationship be romantic or not. This song could even be applied to a close friendship.

Nine Inch Nails – Ruiner Lyrics 22 years ago
I believe this song is basically written about someone who has built a social empire based on lies. A person who persuades people to side with them only to betray those people later. . . A person who lies so often they begin to believe their own lies, and drown in their own fallacies.

"Serving his shit to his flies"
'shit' would be referring to his lies + untruths. . . 'flies' referring to the people who fall for him.

"maybe there will come a day when those that you keep blind will suddenly realize"
He's saying maybe there will come a day when the people who believed in this person will wake up and realize the truth behind his lies.

"you know I can see
what you really are"
Trent's basically saying, "You can't fool me, I know what you are and I'm willing to expose you"
