The main idea i got from this song can be summed up into a single question: Will the youth provide leaders and heroes for tomorrow when the heroes and leaders of today are gone? this can be built upon... but just a thought |

Jus maken a post, and complimenting on how well they pull it off on the album "Live Between Us". I have no clue what the lyrics mean, but its a real good song to listen to. I think a band can do anyting if they have 5 hours for every song to master it in the studio, but to pull it off perfect live, in front of thousands of people, it takes some real talent earned only through hard work and experiance. I'm a guitarist and i know how hard it is to make live stuff sound good... plus the crowd will mess yeh up. |

well i havent heard the song, but i just have to agree with carms on that one... the hip havent sold out their Canadian roots just to be more of an American commodity. The Tragically Hip are proud to be Canadian, and in turn makes me damn proud to be Canadian. Definately without a doubt, my favourite band of all time. They should be crowned Canada's Band" |

The title of this song is the only thing that even remotely hints at what it's about. Given this, i think its about what it would be like having to hide out in your home country (Austria) during WWII because of what you believe in, and how they had to keep their lives a secret, and they would have to have people on the outside helping them survive. This song could generally be about having to rely on the support of others. |

I honestly couldnt tell yah what this song is about, but im trying to draw attention to the Hip forum, so people post more. Its a good song off of the Phantom Power album, and I'm going to go out on a limb and say that its about the long-term-negative consequences of doing something that feels good (ex. drug abuse, unprotected sex, eating fattening foods lol). |

I saw The Hip in concert once (well okay, it was on TV, but the concert was 2000 miles away) and he changed the first line to : "He said I'm Tragically Hip" and the crowd went nuts. Also, on the album "Live Between Us", it is the perfect song to open with. |

I think Mr. Fully Completely hit the nail on the head with that one... but Gord's over aplicable lyrics can mean so much by saying very little. Best song writer this day and age. I think this song could be bult arround the ever so popular "Knowledge is Power" cliche. |

I cant believe nobody has posted anything about this song yet... its a gooder. I play guitar and i definately like to play The Hip's stuff, its fun and especially catchy. To me, this song is about a rich girl (or a girl of higher social class) going to hang out in the "wrong neighbourhood" (sorry for stereotypes) and doesnt realize the different walks of life... or i could be completely wrong. |

The fact of weather or not Gordo was messed up when he wrote that is debatable. The alternative definition of "Opiate" is: extreme dull relaxation. The chorus has some sublitinal referance to being to lazy to maintain a friendship. That's one thing about Gord's lyrics, they can be applied on several different levels. No doubt that this song is a gooder. |
