this song is clearly about the untimely loss of a child, but i think it's specifically about a miscarriage or abortion. the "strange inversion" and "vacancy that just did not belong" suggest a both a physical and emotional emptiness that could be associated with an abortion. the line "no kind of loving that can make this alright" seems to have a bitter, jaded tone . . . implying that sex won't get her out of this situation. |

i don't think this song is about a man at all. to me it's more about knowing that you possess an inner strength that the people around you can't even conceive. haven't you ever been told that you'll never be able to do something by the people you love? this song is just saying, "look, i'm going to do it anyway, regardless of what you think, because i know i can." |
